Did anyone else have a "fuck it, I'm retiring" moment?

I'm in my late 50s, mortgage paid off, have worked since the age of 18. I'm so close to jacking my job my job in .

Yup, I did at 43. Sold everything that had a value (house, car), loaded everything else (inc. the dog) into a van and moved to Portugal to see what the next part of my life would look like. Seventeen years later I think I made the right choice.

twomanyfrogsinabox · 25/09/2024 12:49

Yes, and I did.

PaminaMozart · 25/09/2024 12:51

Well yes, i did, though I was a few years older. Never regretted it. I don't know how I ever found time to work...

But........ I could definitely afford to retire.

That's the biggy. You need to do a thorough financial analysis.

You don't want to risk being poor in your old age.

TheStroppyFeminist · 25/09/2024 12:53

I'm with you op. We still have DC at uni which means this is on hold but I am sick of working, sick of other people, bored of it all. I want to do what I want to do any old time. And time is running out and I really am close to saying nope, not doing it any more. We'd have to economise big time but could do it.

Fizzadora · 25/09/2024 12:56

Yup 5 years ago aged 59. Asked if I wanted to step up into a next level role with no extra pay or have a year's salary to fuck off.
Fortunately the job gave me a decent pension to live on til SP kicks in.
I should get some hobbies or a part time job but to be fair I've had a job since I was 13 so can't be arsed. My granddaughter and my garden keep me busy enough.

Yes, and I did.

Wow, this is inspiring! (Runs off to sell all worldly goods)

KoalaKube · 25/09/2024 13:04

62 can’t wait, I have a financial plan or two for when mortgage is paid off in 15 months. Either sell up or rental income and little bits of pension income. Then I’m off for a bit to travel, cheap ish living.

WOW!!

Tell me more!

Nourishinghandcream · 25/09/2024 13:14

Yes, I did and it was the best thing I ever did.😁

Always intended retiring at 60 and had put everything in place to enable this but was on a miserable commute home from the office one day and thought to myself, "why am I still doing this?".
Had always kept an eye on my pensions so already knew it was more than feasible (I was 56 then) so when I got home I announced to my OH I was finishing.
Did the paperwork the next day and left a few months later.

Not regretted it and am living my best life.

OH is very envious but being 3-years younger has taken to working just 2-days a week in preparation to also finishing at 56.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 25/09/2024 13:14

Not yet, but at nearly 54 I can feel it getting closer!

Just need the teens to leave acdca few more years in my pension pot. This is the flip side of leaving parenthood late.

LlynTegid · 25/09/2024 13:20

I think I would have done were it not for the option to go to working only four days. Reduced hours might be an option to consider.

I'm 56 later this year and very much having these thoughts. Planning on going down to 4 days in the new year to see if this helps!

JohnCravensNewsround · 25/09/2024 13:40

I'm 56 and a half.
Literally could jack it in tomorrow. Instead we are paying £2k a month into pension until we are 60. At that point plan to do a 3 day week for 2 years then stop

DramaAlpaca · 25/09/2024 13:40

I turned 60 this year and I haven't had a 'fuck it I'm done' moment yet, but I'm reading this thread with great interest.

TravelInsuranceQ · 25/09/2024 13:40

I'm in my early 60s and have a massive spreadsheet with everything in it so I can track the earliest I can retire.
If they made me redundant today, I'd be ecstatic!
Otherwise I reckon in about 2 years time I'll be able to retire....

I've decided against going part time as that will just delay my retirement date (I paid off my mortgage this year so want to get to a specific target of savings to see me through until my state pension starts at 67)

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 25/09/2024 13:42

I'm aiming to go next year at 65. I'll be poorish until SP kicks in at 67. but should have enough income from novel writing to keep me ticking over, plus a couple of very sparse private pensions. I'd rather live on beans and have time to do stuff while I'm still fit enough to want to!

Chemenger · 25/09/2024 13:44

Yes, one conversation with my line manager pushed me over the edge about a year and an half ago. Haven’t regretted it for a moment.

Spacie · 25/09/2024 13:50

Yes, one day I realised that every word that came out of my boss's mouth was a lie, so I quit with a motley collection of pensions to go to. I was 57. (Also it was 2020 and I'd realised that I was quite happy with a frugal, stay at home life)

LizTruss · 25/09/2024 14:18

Yes. My exact words, actually.

DizzyBumble · 25/09/2024 14:44

If all goes to plan with over payments the mortgage will be paid off in 5-6 years but can't even consider it until then sadly

Fatbottomgardener · 25/09/2024 17:48

I did at 61 and wish I had done it sooner

FriendlyNeighbourhoodAccountant · 25/09/2024 17:51

Yes! Unfortunately it turns out I'm only 32 and so I'll have to keep working for a while yet.

ViciousCurrentBun · 25/09/2024 17:57

DH did very surprisingly and retires next week at 56. Severance deals were being offered, higher education is just very tough currently as is everywhere. I’m older than him and have some health issues so before I’m disabled which is an actual possibility in the future we are having time together.

StarSwooshSpangles · 25/09/2024 17:59

Yes. I was made redundant, I didn't want late nights or weekends anymore. I would find it hard to get another job where I wouldn't have to do this due to my skill set , so fuck it. 18 months later here I am retired and don't regret it.

ViciousCurrentBun · 25/09/2024 17:59

@Eyesopenwideawake that was very brave of you!
