OK, can't take the pill.
Condoms just aren't nice and make me feel like it's a one night stand (but not in a good way!). Husband won't have a vasectomy.

Any experience / advice about other forms of contraception? A bit put off the coil by a description from a friend of a little dangly wire / bit of string!!

I've had the coil for a couple of months now and not felt a thing! Apparently if the dangly wire is in the way then they trim it. My dp has never said he can feel the wire. And my periods have practically stopped all together !

Was a tad uncomfortable being inserted, they suggest taking ibuprofen before you go but other than that, I've had no probs with it at all. And neither have any of my other friends who have it.

Personally I think the coil rocks! Hth

I've had the implanon implant in now for 3 yrs, due to have it changed and have no hesitation on having another. I have had no problems at all, also before that i had the injection, can't remember what it was called, i had to have an injection every 3 mths i thin and found that fine too.

wifyhome - because I want to be informed about actual experiences. GPs only know facts!!!

anon - can you feel the implant? I presume it's one of the under the skin of your upper arm things.

Yes, you can feel it if you touch your arm where it is placed, which i admit feels a bit weird at first but i soon got used to it, you can't really feel it there unless you are feeling for it if you know what i mean, and you can actually see it if you look closely, but it is on the inside of my upper arm, not noticeable from a distance ie nobody would notice it.

Another fan of the Mirena coil here - can't tell it's there, periods virtually disappeared and seems to have sent my libido soaring .

lalalong legs - interesting - when I was on the pill, I found it went the other way, which kind of defeats the point of it!!

GPs are humand and often women too!

Not an immediate issue - actually pregnant at the mo!! Though that is actually why it is forefront in my mind at the minute - definitely not having any more, so want to be sorted as soon as poss after the baby is born!!!

Mirena great if you get on with hormonal contraception. Am just about to have mine swapped for a copper coil as it's made me gain weight, tender breasts, spots, mood swings in the same way that all pills seem to.

The majority seem to get on with it though, so may be worth a try. Couldn't get anything more convenient but be aware that it's unlikely you'll be warned of side effects, I wasn't, it's only through MN that I worked out why I've turned into a bloater!!

I know it's rather old fashioned, but I've used the diaphragm for all my married life ( almost 30 years) and never had a problem. I have a family that was totally planned and never found it any less 'spontaneous' that condoms. It has to be fitted. My GP does it, but I know FPCs do it too. You just have to get the cream to go with it, and my GP gives that to me on prescription ( so free because it is contraceptive). Needs to be checked and replaced annually.

There is also the nuva ring, which is what I would have gone for if DH hadn't had the snip.

Also don't use condoms as I'm allergic to latex and latex free are horrible!
Before we started trying for DC2 I was on the depo injections, I found them amazing. Didn't put on any weight and periods stopped all together, fell pregnant with DC2 within 6 months of last injections but every body is different.
I will absolutely be going back onto depo, but speak to your doctor to see what might be best for you.

sayithowitis - sorry, going to sound thick here. If you need to put the diaphragm in each time where does the GP fitting it come in?

With condoms, it's not that they aren't spontaneous, it's that they don't feel very nice. Prefer actual 'contact', if that's not TMI!!

Hi Lola, diaphragms come in different sizes and the gp has to make sure that you have the right size. It is especially important if you gain/lose a lot of weight. Once you have the right size ( it only takes a few minutes) the gp gives you a prescription for the size you need. It then usually takes 24 hours for the chemist to get them, as they order them individually. Then, as you say, you just put it in whenever you need to. Once you get the hang of it, it only takes a couple of minutes and unlike a condom, you can insert it 'in anticipation', as long as you have sex within a few hours of putting it in. If you are especially energetic and like to indulge more than once in a few hours, you just put more cream in with the applicator.

I agree with you about the contact, which is why I like the diaphragm, as we still get the contact but I don't have to bugger up my body with hormones!
