Scared of Lighting OVEN!!!

Dh has just stormed out, because he says I am pathetic as I am scared to light the oven with an ignition stick thing!

I am not used to having to stick my hand at the back of the oven to ignite it.

How dare he say I am pathetic!!!!..or am I?
He is scared of spiders!

Put a spider in his bed. serve him right!

Tell him to stop being so mean and get the ignition button fixed on your cooker

W are renting, and the landlords give the usual c**p stories.....there is no ignition for our oven in stores anymore! It would be the oven!!!
It's the only thing that was in the flat when we moved in!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tell him i'm scared too and never managed to do it myself when the ignition went.

spend £40 on a multi-cooker and don't use the oven

I was frightened of lighting the gas rings on my mother's cooker (it was an ancient cooker and didn't have an ignition at all and had to be lit with a match) when I was a teenager, and it drove her round the bend. My brother helped me to overcome my fear. He got me to turn it on very low so that there wasn't that big sort of puff of fire when it lit. That was it was much less daunting for me. Now I'm fine about that sort of thing, but I do find a "gently gently" approach is the only way I can overcome my fears. Is there anything you can use so that you don't have to reach right to the back of the oven? Like a long newspaper spill maybe?

I think you can buy long spillikins (not sure if that's what they are called), designed for lighting barbeques etc - basically chopstick-length tapers that you can light with a match but then keep your hands away from the gas.

I wish lighting ovens were my only problem!

I had a gas cooker and oven like that. Get one of those candle light things. Makes igniting them a snap.

Asda do the candle lighter ones for about £3.

Have you checked out your legal rights if it is a rental property? The cooker is presumable old if you can't get spare parts. The rules regarding gas applicances are pretty strict now, you might be able to force your landlord to replace it

Put a spider in the oven and ask him to light it. That'll shut him up.

I'm always wary of these type of ovens too - when I was at school i singed all my eyelashes cos it puffed out at me cos i took so long to get my hand right to the back with the lighter.

I hate this too. First thing we did when we moved into current house was break ignition button off cooker. We are using matches now, and I have to really psyche myself up to use them. But luckily oven is electric! Had a really 'explosive' oven in France once and we used to use long taper things, they were wax coated like long thin candles. No idea if you can still get this sort of thing... try the sort of local hardware shop that sells nuts and bolts in every imaginable size...!
