Is this a bit weird or not?

My friend has asked me to post for her. I am a regular btw, moldies, gregg's, fruitshoots, scoffing grapes without paying etc etc etc.

Her dd, 15 has recently got in touch with her father for the first time since she was around three years old.

Friend happens to see over dd's shoulder an email from estranged father. It begins "Hi Babe, are you ok?"

Friends just feels a bit about him calling her "Babe". I don't have teenagers and not really wanting to venture an opinion so thought I would post here and get MN verdict.

Calling teenage daughter "babe" ok or not?

I would say that its ok. My ex-p was in a similar situation as this girls dad, and he always struggled terribly to know how to talk to/ relate to her; he's just being a typical uncool dad I guess

Yes, probably right. Didn't think of middle aged Dad trying to be cool.

I don't think it's weird - I have friends who use this term in a fairly non discriminatory way and it certainly isn't sexual or anything (if that's what's worrying her). It's just like 'hon/hun' or 'sweetheart' or whatever.

AnyFucker · 24/02/2010 19:05

well, I would find it cringeworthy rather than sinister, tbh

I have an allergy against blokes that use terms like "babe"...so juvenile

LOL at you justifying being a regular with "I am a regular btw, moldies, gregg's, fruitshoots, scoffing grapes without paying etc etc etc."

Anyway, no he probably just talks like that

skidoodle · 24/02/2010 19:10

not weird

MrsPixie · 24/02/2010 19:11

no not weird just trying to be "young"

BetterBitOfButter · 24/02/2010 19:16

I'm 32 and my dad called me babe my whole life until he passed away last year. It was his pet name for me since I was literally a little babe. So now I find the term weird when people use it in a sexual sense!
