so here we go its January and DP has decided we both overweight. He AGAIN said if I cut out sugar in my tea it will help! Besides the fact that I said his pint every night is not loaded with sugar! He always has and still picks this argument and I say he doesn't have sugar in tea (Mr holy than thou) but he put on weight quicker than me! I really feel this is so unfair, or is he right?

There's more sugar in his pint that in your tea

displayuntiltwelfthnight · 03/01/2010 23:09

will you eat a biscuit with your tea if you cut the spoon of sugar?

TheCrackFox · 03/01/2010 23:10

I used to have sugar in tea/coffee and when I gave sugar up (which was bloody hard BTW) I lost no weight whatsoever.

I think there are 16kcal in a teaspoon of sugar.

GypsyMoth · 03/01/2010 23:11

You are an individual, tell him you want sugar so are having it!!! Where is the issue??? Is it control?

displayuntiltwelfthnight · 03/01/2010 23:12

depends on whether you have sugar in your tea or tea in your sugar. If it's only one tsp you have in your mug, it's not going to make a massive difference and there's probably somewhere else you can cut back on with more noticeable results?

chegirlwithbellson · 03/01/2010 23:13

I dont think its bad as such. I have always taken sugar in my tea.

When I wanted to shift a few pounds after DC4 was born I swopped sugar for a sweetener for a few months and it did make a difference. It depends how much tea you drink. If you have 10 cups a day thats a lot of sugar, if you only have two its not.

But sweetners arent brilliant for you so ....

Its a daft argument from your DP though. If he is having a pint everynight he is having loads of sugar!

MadameDefarge · 03/01/2010 23:24

twats. him for saying it. you for taking it. There ya go.

TeamTennant · 03/01/2010 23:27

16kcal in tsp sugar
About 400kcal in a pint

Ergo - YANBU

"so here we go its January and DP has decided we both overweight..."

He what?!

I'd be telling him, if he thinks he has a weight problem to go ahead and address it, if he wishes -therefore rendering the rest of the discussion null and void.

wollysocks · 04/01/2010 00:17

have read comments back to DP. He says he never said anything of the sort, merely that he suggested it might help if i cut out sugar and would get used to the taste of the tea as oppossed to the taste of the sugar.

look here you can sign up for free to see exactly how many calories are in your tea, his pints and everything else you consume

MamaLazarou · 04/01/2010 08:14

You'd have to be quite a seriously committed tea-drinker for the calories to count that much.

A girl I work with recently announced that she was switching to sweeteners in an effort to "lose all this weight once and for all".

She drinks about two or three cups of tea a day, but has a Chinese takeaway most days for lunch and cakes & biscuits throughout the afternoon.

I didn't say anything.

TrillianAstra · 04/01/2010 08:16

400 cal in a pint? Of what? There's 180 cals in a pint of 'normal' beer.

Teaspoon of granulated sugar is 16 cals.

His being bossy is more of a problem than the numbers though, obviously.

DuelingFanjo · 04/01/2010 08:29

depends on how many spoons you have. I have 1 very small one. My dad used to have about 3 or 4!

2010jollster · 04/01/2010 08:46

professional tea tasters will tell you that a little bit of sugar brings the flavour out more....

LoveBeingAMummyKissingSanta · 04/01/2010 08:51

My mum drinks an amazing number of cups of tea a day so swtiching to sweetner did make a difference to her.

The question is do you want to cut out sugar in your tea? Why is he so bothered about you having sugar?

LadyThompson · 04/01/2010 08:51

It is very bad for your teeth though. Have a sweetener instead.

purplepeony · 04/01/2010 09:04

Sweeteners are bad for your health in lots of other ways though. Aspartame ha s been linked to cancer and is banned in the USA. SWeetners taste foul anyway.

This is such a trivial argument!.

Having or not having sugar should be part of a calorie-controlled diet if you want to lose weight. It's not bad in itself but it does rot your teeth, every time you have a swig of tea/coffee.

FlightAttendant · 04/01/2010 09:15

LIFE IS TOO SHORT!!!

and tea is disgusting without sugar!

piscesmoon · 04/01/2010 09:24

Tea with sugar is utterly disgusting-in fact undrinkable!!

warthog · 04/01/2010 11:54

over time, sweeteners cause you to put on more weight than sugar. your brain registers how much sugar you're having and will attempt to limit you. your brain can't register sweetener so you have no natural limit.

lighthouse · 04/01/2010 11:56

I hate sugar in tea, however, my advice everything in moderation.

lighthouse · 04/01/2010 11:57

Tell him to get stuffed.
