Has anyone ever hired a private investigator?

Trying to figure I few things out in my relationship with DH and was wondering if anyone ever hired a private investigator to check what dp/dh has been up too and if he is having an affair.

If so why, and how do you go about it?

I posted about this a few months ago under Really Confused. I decided not to however, I did eventually catch dh 4 weeks ago. After being angry, upset and hurt and seeing a solicitor we have decided to work things out. I had all the evvidence for months but he kept denying it. He slipped up in the end with a text msg.
