Has anyone been to relate?

What is it like? what kind of thing do you do? is it like sitting in a room together talking with a councilor etc? did it help?

yes. it helped. We knew we loved each other, and there weren't any major issues like infidelity, but we were both under a huge amount of stress and it helped us communicate better. The counsellor says as little as possible really, she just facilitates the conversation between you. I think it can help you know whether to stay together or not.

My experience of it was awful actually. I don't think it's for everyone.

Mmm, it felt at the assessment session (when you have to wait for the real thing weeks later) that talking about stuff at all was like setting a massive hand grenade off which we had to then go away and deal with. And it was miles away, so a stony car journey too which was hellish. Glad we split up, don't think Relate would have helped.

It is vital that you get the right person- all counsellors are totally different- they are human!

If you feel you don't gel with one, try another one. You don't have to go to Relate- there are many excellent counsellors and you can find them on the BACP website.
