End things now or after mini break?

After four years seeing someone (not living together as have own kids and property etc), I've decided that he's not for me. He's a lovely guy but for the last year at least I've known I wouldn't want to ever live with him and it feels like there's no way for our relationship to progress further, although he would like it to.

We are different people, different needs in a relationship, etc etc.

Issue is, he booked us a mini break early in the year (he has a habit of buying tickets to things then then telling/asking me if I'm keen), and while this is something I've been looking forward to all year, I know my feelings have gotten to the point I'm sort of avoiding spending time with him. We need to have the conversation, but do I have it now and he goes off to this already paid for break by himself, or do we go together and I end things afterwards? It's an event which I think would be not as fun doing alone so I'd feel guilty making him go alone, but not sure I can play the happy couple?

I have raised issues before and we almost ended things in the New Year, but this is apparently who he is and I have tried to make it work for me.

I'm mid 50s, this could be my last relationship, but I think I'd rather be single and in peace.

End it now. Life is too short to be miserable.
Single and peaceful is brilliant OP.

Fiftyandme · 17/10/2026 09:22

End it now.

Brendayouknowthatyouremuchtoolazy · 17/10/2026 09:22

If you are done now, why would you put yourself (or him) through another 3 months of limping on?

Imbusytodaysorry · 17/10/2026 09:24

@UndoRedo end it now and it will all be a distant memory by the end of the year and you can bring in the new year fresh . If you wait until after the trip you will
be dealing with this going into a new year.

UndoRedo · 17/10/2026 09:26

Sorry should have been clearer that the mini break is next weekend 🤦

You end it beforehand and you transfer the money for your half of the break to his account so he isn’t out of pocket.

It would be very wrong to string him along further by going on the break.

BalakayAARon · 17/10/2026 09:27

How soon is it, I'm not sure if he booked it early this year or it is in the new year? I do think you should end it now though so he at least has the chance of going with someone else.

ETA Cross posted.

I was in an almost identical position a few years back - in my 50s, four year relationship, a growing realisation over months that it was not what I wanted. By late June I was wincing when he tried to kiss me and so I finally had The Talk, agreed it was over, all very amicably.

But we had festival tickets for the following month. In the end we still went together but felt free to go off and do our own thing rather than sticking together all the time. It was fine.

Could you have a chat about the (non) future of the relationship and then offer him the choice over what to do about the mini break? Or do you think that once you say it is over, one or both of you will want an immediate clean break?

NorthernDancer · 17/10/2026 09:29

I went on the mini break and it really didn't work. Why put yourself through it? Pay your share and end it now.

Dunnocantthinkofone · 17/10/2026 09:31

I think you’d be miserable for the weekend but to go knowing you are just about to dump him is bloody unkind.
Tell him now.

thisismeithinkorisit · 17/10/2026 09:33

I mean do you want to spend the weekend being awkward nad making an atmosphere and possibly ruining the experience for him, or pretending everything is great, laughing at his jokes, having sex owth him and then coming back and feeling like you can't break it off immediately after the break so you'll keep on and oh gosh it's Christmas so you can't dump him yet and oh he's booked a weekend for Valentines day so....

You have to do it now. You should have done it before. Definitely cover your half of the costs.

Ittybittyspid · 17/10/2026 09:45

End it now. It’ll be harder after the weekend and he will almost certainly throw it in your face and ask you why you went knowing you were going to leave him.

There will always be something to wait for. Birthdays, Christmas, that dinner with friends you planned. Best to just rip the plaster off I’ve found.

whippersnapper55 · 17/10/2026 09:55

I would end it now. I'd probably feel obligated to offer to pay my half for the weekend away, but that's up to you. There's no point in dragging it out and he'll probably feel more resentful if you dump him straight after a weekend away that he's paid for!

100% agree.

Going away with someone you don't want to be with will be awful for both of you.

cheezncrackers · 17/10/2026 09:57

I think it's more respectful to end it now, rather than string him along for a further week and let him have a nice weekend with you when you're eyeing the door. Could he take someone else in your place (one of his kids maybe?)

ETA: if not, I think I'd at least offer to pay my half of the weekend away (if you can afford to)

pinkdelight · 17/10/2026 09:58

As you’ve stuck it out for a year knowing it’s not for you I’d do the weekend seeing as it’s so soon and bad to cancel on anyone so last minute. But break it off in Nov well before Xmas. Say the minibreak made your mind up if needs be.

amber763 · 17/10/2026 10:02

End it pay him back for the break. At least your half.

I think he'll get arsy, he has a bit of a temper on him, which is one thing I don't like. I thought my child care had fallen through for the weekend a while back and he was furious.

End it now, both for you and for him.

My exH ended our 17y relationship just days after a weekend break (first since our 1st child 5.5y earlier, and we had a just 2yo).
We'd had a really nice weekend (I thought), and then bam!!

In that case - definitely end it now. Going on a weekend away that you don't want just to avoid his nasty temper is not acceptable on any level. And it's not longer about respect - it's about the fact that he's a dick and doesn't deserve your continued company!

SillyG · 17/10/2026 10:09

You're out of order for misleading him for months and then thinking of dumping him the week before you go away.

So selfish and such a lack of awareness of your poor behavior.

Motheranddaughter · 17/10/2026 10:10

To me a mini break means lots of sex which I wouldn’t want to have with someone I was about to break up with

Drip feed...

cartagenagina · 17/10/2026 10:10

Oh! Given your update, you definitely need to end this relationship but do it safely.

What would happen if you got strategic covid/flu?

It is probably best to just end things honestly, but given the statistics on how angry men behave when they are dumped, I might be tempted to extricate myself carefully rather than completely honestly.

Please stay safe.

omghereistrouble · 17/10/2026 10:14

end it now, it does not sound like you are not committed to this relationship anymore.
better call it a day then you can both hopefully find happiness elsewhere
