Is my boyfriend controlling or not?

Basically, me and my boyfriend have been together for 7 months, but I feel like he’s been controlling or is showing signs of how he might act in the future. I came on Reddit just to get lots of different opinions and advice about it.
I’m 18F (I recently turned 18), and he’s also 18M, so we’re still quite young. I’m also his first relationship, which is why I keep giving him chances because I know we’re both young and he’s never really been in a relationship before me.When we first got together, the first 2–3 months were great. I genuinely couldn’t see anything about him that upset me, unlike in my other relationships, so I thought things were going really well.
Then, I think around 4 months into the relationship, he broke up with me. He showed up at my door and said it was because of the Leon Kennedy poster I had on my wall. Yes, I love Resident Evil, and Leon is my favourite. However, before this, he had told me to uninterest TikToks of anime guys and Leon, and I did because I didn’t mind. To me, Leon is like when you see something really cool or a guy online for the first time and get obsessed with them for a few days or weeks. Then, a few years later, you see them again and think, “Yeah, he’s still attractive,” but you don’t really care that much anymore. That’s basically how I felt about Leon before me and my boyfriend even got together.
Before he broke up with me the first time, he told me he didn’t care about the Leon stuff, but then he used it as a reason to break up with me. We got back together because I wanted to save the relationship. He then said the actual reason we broke up was because he didn’t like himself or the way he looked, even though I told him I loved him and complimented him every day. Later on, when we were around 6 months into the relationship, another situation happened. Before this, he had told me to ask my sister to stop sending me TikToks of guys, like edits of them. I said, “Yeah, sure,” and I told her many times to stop.
However, I was watching the TikToks she had sent me while I was sitting next to him, and she sent me an edit of a guy. He broke up with me because he said I should have told her to stop, even though I explained that I had. He also said that if she didn’t stop, I should have stopped watching them altogether. We ended up getting back together the next day. Those were the first few situations that I started picking up on, but there have been more as well.
For example, I have piercings, and one day, a guy I had never met before walked past me in a shopping centre and said, “I like your piercings.” I just replied, “Thanks,” and was happy that someone had complimented me. I never said anything else to him, and I never saw him again. When I told my boyfriend about it because I was happy, he got upset with me and said I shouldn’t have said anything in the first place. We also had a big talk about drinking at pubs, clubbing and going to raves. At first, he told me he didn’t want me going drinking, clubbing or to raves without him. I said that was fine as long as the same rule applied to him, so we agreed.
However, a month or so later, his sister invited him to go to raves with her in the future. He then said to me, “By the way, you can go drinking with your sister occasionally because I want to go to raves with my sister.” This upset me because why is he only allowing me to do things when it’s convenient for him?
Since it was recently my birthday, I wore a cute, short skirt with built-in shorts and a top with sleeves that had lace detailing on the back and arms. He told me he didn’t want me to wear that outfit when I went drinking with my family (my mum, sisters and nan).
He kept getting upset because he could see my bra, so I changed my top. However, he still had a problem with my top because my shoulders were showing. He also didn’t want me to wear my birthday badge because he didn’t want guys coming up to me and saying “Happy birthday” or giving me attention.
Another thing that upsets me is that he posts Instagram stories of himself flexing with his shirt off, and he also posts TikToks doing the same thing. However, he got upset with me when I posted a TikTok with my top pulled up a little to show off my waist. He told me I couldn’t post things like that.
He said he only posts pictures and videos of himself with his shirt off to show his gym progress. I asked him, “Why can’t you just take pictures and not post them, then?” He will only let me take bikini pictures or show off my body if I’m going to the gym to show my progress. But for him, it’s okay because he goes to the gym?
I honestly don’t know if I’m valid for being upset about this, but to me, it seems controlling. Of course, I want to hear other people’s opinions because my family has told me it’s just because he’s insecure, but I don’t know.
I’d really appreciate hearing different perspectives on this. Am I overreacting, or are these signs of controlling behaviour? I know we’re both young, and he’s never been in a relationship before, so I want to be understanding, but I also don’t want to ignore red flags if there are any.

Do yourself a favour and get rid of this controller bellend.

WorthyBlueHare · 11/10/2026 12:49

Yes he’s controlling, and yes it is because he is insecure and inexperienced in relationships but that is an explanation, not an excuse. You seem to have a wise head on your young shoulders. Hold him to the standard you know he needs to meet, if he can’t get over the possessiveness, let him go for both your sakes.

Lw00f · 11/10/2026 12:57

This is worrying behaviour that will likely escalate, he will wear you down until you’re isolated and insecure yourself. I’d cut your losses now, in your heart you know this behaviour is wrong, at 18 you should be able to have as much fun with your friends and wear what you want. Don’t let an insecure boy ruin what’s meant to be some of your most fun years! You deserve better than that 🤍

RageBates · 11/10/2026 13:09

Worryingly controlling, especially given that you're both so young.

Do you have supportive parents/friends you can talk to? You mentioned your sister...is she aware?

You may think you love this man, but this is not healthy love. You are allowed to socialise, dress, think, speak and act however you choose - you're your own person.

Jackospice · 11/10/2026 13:10

He’s controlling you because he’s insecure. You don’t have to just be his emotional support animal to help him feel better or learn how to do relationships, nor do you have to accommodate his insecurities at your own cost, in order to be kind. He’s not worried about being kind to you. It’s only been a few months, imagine you stay together, where will you be in 10 /20/30 years. I imagine stuck at home with no career, no friends and isolated from your family all in case you go out and talk to men or be seen by other men and it upsets him.

if as you say, this is not the first relationship like this, perhaps have a little step back from them for a bit and look at your boundaries, what you’re attracted to in men and what relationship dynamics feel normal to you.

Sodthesystem · 11/10/2026 14:13

He’s not controlling her “because he’s insecure”.

He’s not insecure at all, he just wants her to think he is so that he can control her and turn HER into an insecure mess.

Abusers do this to keep control.
Its control. Not insecurity.

They aren’t damaged little puppies that are worried you will leave them so they are acting up. They are spiders who are training you to stay in their web so they can keep feeding from you.

Omg what? Yes he is insecure but that’s not for you to fix. You’re not his Mummy and you’re not his psychiatrist/counsellor/mental health specialist either. He shouldn’t be in a relationship until he has worked on his issues, which are many. He is jealous, possessive and extremely controlling. In no way should you entertain any of this. You wear what you want, when you want. You go where you want with whoever you want. You must stop this nonsense now. End it, he is not right for you. Don’t feel bad or guilty or sorry just move on and don’t let anyone interfere with your personal freedom again.

emziecy · 11/10/2026 20:08

Love, you're worth way more than this. Fuck him right off x

applebee33 · 11/10/2026 20:12

Oh god hunny dump this absolute looser . Your young and will eventually learn to spot these creeps a mile off

Gobbledegoo · 11/10/2026 20:25

You are "Young Free and Single" in the words of the song. Keep it that way. Dump this controlling person, He has been reading books on controlling women and is practicing his "art" on you as have his predecessors you have been out with.

Snookercucumbers · 11/10/2026 20:35

From firsthand experience, unfortunately, I would say yes he is definitely controlling.
Please dump him.
This won't get better.
No one should dictate to you what you wear or where you go or what you watch.
Yes, low self esteem is usually an issue with controlling people. They do it to make themselves better and tread all over the people that let them.
Don't let him.
Eventually you'll find someone decent.
He will suck all of the life out of you until all of your confidence is gone and then you won't have the strength to break up as he'll have you second guessing everything all of the time.
You've been able to see it already. Trust your instincts, my lovely.

Copperoliverbear · 11/10/2026 20:36

Jesus Christ run for the bloody hills, block him and don’t look back and no matter how much he begs you do not go near him again he is controlling and insecure and I wouldn’t mind betting has mental health issues. Please please 🙏 get away from him now.

cherryicecreamisnice · 11/10/2026 20:52

Tell him to go live in Afghanistan

IamtheDevilsAvocado · 12/10/2026 03:46

IdaGlossop · 09/10/2026 17:58

Please end this now. His is controlling what you wear, who you see and what you view on social media. Not on.

This.

if you were my daughter, I'd be appalled and asking you to get away from him as far as possible and as quickly as possible. Good luck.

Wotsupmog · 12/10/2026 04:17

Yup he's controlling and you can't rely on him changing so this needs to end. It's great that you thought to post about it.
Completely separately, it's not very nice to be sitting next to your partner while they are looking at photos of other men/women, and the fact that your sister sent them after you asked her not to, isn't a good reason for viewing them while he's there. Maybe consider that in your next relationship.

WillieEccerslike · 12/10/2026 05:40

Well done for realising he's starting to control you.
My mum ended up in an abusive marriage with my Dad until she got out with my brother and I and divorced him.
Her advice to me was, if he tells you what/what not to wear get out, if he tells you who you can/ can't talk to get out, if he tells you where and with whomever you can/can't go get out .
You'll become a shadow of who you were and won't know which way is up.

It will never get better.

Cardhey · 12/10/2026 05:45

Get rid of him now!

BaobhanSith · 12/10/2026 05:52

Have you dumped him yet @YourRealMentor ?

SaltySpitoon · 12/10/2026 10:56

Yes, he is controlling. He may well be insecure/lacking in confidence but that isn't your problem to fix. The controlling and jealous behaviour will only get worse, so it's best to end it now.

BeenThereBackThen · 12/10/2026 11:05

You’re only 18- well done for asking these questions and noticing these patterns.

Him breaking up over a poster is extremely ridiculous. Wait (or, rather, don’t wait) till you both get jobs and you will have male coworkers and socialising thrown into the mix, he’ll become a right nightmare to be with.

ChimpanzeeThatMonkeyNews · 12/10/2026 11:22

Baby girl, you’re so young. You don’t need to put up with this. Give him the Spanish Archer treatment. 🏹

TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne · 09/10/2026 18:04

End it.
He is the sort of man who becomes dangerous.

You're 18 and there are much better relationships in your future, I promise you.

This 100%.
This is just the tip of the iceberg.
Please leave him.

Sunbringer · 13/10/2026 17:09

Anyone who is breaking up with you over a cartoon man is a loose insecure cannon tbh. He also blames you for other people’s behaviour/choices and tells you what you can and cannot do. This is unacceptable. He is a hypocrite too.

Dont lose your youth to a loser, babe. You’re only 18 once. Go live your life and discover who you are and what you like and don’t like before you chain yourself to someone who despises themself and eventually, when you’re 25, or 30, will give you the ick.
