Is my boyfriend controlling or not?

YourRealMentor · 09/10/2026 17:49

Basically, me and my boyfriend have been together for 7 months, but I feel like he’s been controlling or is showing signs of how he might act in the future. I came on Reddit just to get lots of different opinions and advice about it.
I’m 18F (I recently turned 18), and he’s also 18M, so we’re still quite young. I’m also his first relationship, which is why I keep giving him chances because I know we’re both young and he’s never really been in a relationship before me.When we first got together, the first 2–3 months were great. I genuinely couldn’t see anything about him that upset me, unlike in my other relationships, so I thought things were going really well.
Then, I think around 4 months into the relationship, he broke up with me. He showed up at my door and said it was because of the Leon Kennedy poster I had on my wall. Yes, I love Resident Evil, and Leon is my favourite. However, before this, he had told me to uninterest TikToks of anime guys and Leon, and I did because I didn’t mind. To me, Leon is like when you see something really cool or a guy online for the first time and get obsessed with them for a few days or weeks. Then, a few years later, you see them again and think, “Yeah, he’s still attractive,” but you don’t really care that much anymore. That’s basically how I felt about Leon before me and my boyfriend even got together.
Before he broke up with me the first time, he told me he didn’t care about the Leon stuff, but then he used it as a reason to break up with me. We got back together because I wanted to save the relationship. He then said the actual reason we broke up was because he didn’t like himself or the way he looked, even though I told him I loved him and complimented him every day. Later on, when we were around 6 months into the relationship, another situation happened. Before this, he had told me to ask my sister to stop sending me TikToks of guys, like edits of them. I said, “Yeah, sure,” and I told her many times to stop.
However, I was watching the TikToks she had sent me while I was sitting next to him, and she sent me an edit of a guy. He broke up with me because he said I should have told her to stop, even though I explained that I had. He also said that if she didn’t stop, I should have stopped watching them altogether. We ended up getting back together the next day. Those were the first few situations that I started picking up on, but there have been more as well.
For example, I have piercings, and one day, a guy I had never met before walked past me in a shopping centre and said, “I like your piercings.” I just replied, “Thanks,” and was happy that someone had complimented me. I never said anything else to him, and I never saw him again. When I told my boyfriend about it because I was happy, he got upset with me and said I shouldn’t have said anything in the first place. We also had a big talk about drinking at pubs, clubbing and going to raves. At first, he told me he didn’t want me going drinking, clubbing or to raves without him. I said that was fine as long as the same rule applied to him, so we agreed.
However, a month or so later, his sister invited him to go to raves with her in the future. He then said to me, “By the way, you can go drinking with your sister occasionally because I want to go to raves with my sister.” This upset me because why is he only allowing me to do things when it’s convenient for him?
Since it was recently my birthday, I wore a cute, short skirt with built-in shorts and a top with sleeves that had lace detailing on the back and arms. He told me he didn’t want me to wear that outfit when I went drinking with my family (my mum, sisters and nan).
He kept getting upset because he could see my bra, so I changed my top. However, he still had a problem with my top because my shoulders were showing. He also didn’t want me to wear my birthday badge because he didn’t want guys coming up to me and saying “Happy birthday” or giving me attention.
Another thing that upsets me is that he posts Instagram stories of himself flexing with his shirt off, and he also posts TikToks doing the same thing. However, he got upset with me when I posted a TikTok with my top pulled up a little to show off my waist. He told me I couldn’t post things like that.
He said he only posts pictures and videos of himself with his shirt off to show his gym progress. I asked him, “Why can’t you just take pictures and not post them, then?” He will only let me take bikini pictures or show off my body if I’m going to the gym to show my progress. But for him, it’s okay because he goes to the gym?
I honestly don’t know if I’m valid for being upset about this, but to me, it seems controlling. Of course, I want to hear other people’s opinions because my family has told me it’s just because he’s insecure, but I don’t know.
I’d really appreciate hearing different perspectives on this. Am I overreacting, or are these signs of controlling behaviour? I know we’re both young, and he’s never been in a relationship before, so I want to be understanding, but I also don’t want to ignore red flags if there are any.

So he’s controlling what you where, where you go, what you post, what you view. Run away fast. I’d also question why you have tolerated this for so long?

Honestly im not sure myself, past relationships have also been terrible for me and this time he seemed way better than the other guys i had been with and since he seemed better i thought he would change into a better person after times he knew he had upset me. I also dont have friends to talk to about this so really the only people i can speak to are family but its not always easy, i think i just went with "every relationship has problems" and just carried on which now i know wasnt best.

There’s such an unhelpful patriarchal narrative that controlling and coercive men are Bad Guys - while anxious and insecure men with low self esteem are Good Guys, and need unconditional love and understanding, and must be accommodated at all costs and handled with kid gloves, as there’s a massive male mental health crisis going on, and it’s women’s job to fix it, and if you’re not kind and understanding and compliant enough these poor innocent men will be driven to suicide.

All controlling men are insecure.
All controlling men hate themselves.
All controlling men are anxious.

Nobody does this stuff because they’re happy and well adjusted.

Being unhappy doesn’t give anyone a license to be a dick.

Convincing yourself it’s in any way acceptable to be controlled by a man like this isn’t helping him fix his self esteem problems anyway.

It’s colluding in his avoidance of a problem that lives within himself.

He will not do anything for his mental health while he has you to outsource his anxiety to.

Any time he feels insecure / anxious / unhappy, he will continue to kid himself that it’s because you’re doing something wrong or not making him feel loved enough. And the more you reassure him, the more he will control and abuse you. No amount of reassurance from you or compliance with his demands can fix what isn’t a problem with you to begin with.

It’s not women’s responsibility to fix men’s mental health problems for them or prop up their fragile self esteem.

Get the fuck out. You’ve got your whole life ahead of you! Don’t waste it worrying about sad controlling men.

JLou08 · 09/10/2026 18:38

He is insecure. Most abusers are, that doesn't stop it being abuse or mean that women should stay with them.

MzHz · 09/10/2026 18:42

Yes. 100% this guy is controlling

We got back together because I wanted to save the relationship

YOU wanted to save this?

omg, you’re in so much danger of falling into an abusive relationship!

he dumped you because of his insecurities and a fucking poster!

on top of this he’s telling you who you can go out with and what you can wear!

your mum needs to sit you down and tell you NEVER to put up with this shit from anyone! I’d go FULL mumma bear on this one.

dump him asap, be VERY careful and make sure you tell all your friends and family that you’ve ended this and why. Ask them to look out for you. This guy could be dangerous love.

do not stay in this relationship. Under any circumstances

HatAndScarf33 · 09/10/2026 18:44

You’re young, set your bar high and wait for a decent guy, because he ain’t it! He’s only got one thing right - he doesn’t like himself, and that’s likely driving this insecure and controlling behaviour, but you ‘complying’ won’t fix anything. Only he can fix himself and who knows? Maybe if you break up with him and are honest about why, he may (if he’s sensible) take some time to mature and grow as a person so he doesn’t repeat this kind of behaviour with someone else. Sadly, I doubt that will happen though.

Healthy relationships are built on trust and respect. Bin him quick.

MzHz · 09/10/2026 18:45

You absolutely and categorically can not fix a man.

you can’t make him less insecure, only he can do that, and he can only do that outside of a relationship

thenightsky · 09/10/2026 18:48

Oh just bin him off. I had one of these when I was 17/18 and the power and belief in myself when I actually took control and dumped him was off the scale. It did wonders for my self esteem and confidence. Nobody ever did that to me again!

I'm old now (67) but I still recall the feeling.

whippersnapper55 · 09/10/2026 18:59

Yes he is. He is a twat and you should dump him. No man should be telling you what to do!

Bigtrapeze · 09/10/2026 19:01

OP, this just doesn't sound any fun and you are 18. You should be having the absolute time of your life. I think when people have said to you that all relationships have their problems, this isn't what they mean.

At any age, if a relationship doesn't make your life more joyful, get out quick. Mumsnet is full of people trapped in terrible relationships because of kids/money but you are 18 and have a world of possibility at your feet. Don't let this man take up a minute more of your time. He's threatened by a poster on your wall. Let him go and learn about relationships with someone else because your time is worth more than this. Choose future partners because they make you feel incredibly happy. When that stops, get out. That's all there is to it really. Don't waste a minute of your youth on this madness.

Charel2girl5 · 09/10/2026 19:01

Run like the wind! Take time to think about the kind of boyfriend you would be happy with, raise your standards and never put up with this absolute bullshit again.

At last, I foresee complete agreement on Mumsnet

ForTipsyFinch · 09/10/2026 19:07

He’s absolutely horrible, you don’t need to be understanding when it comes to abusive men. That’s the worst possible thing to be in this scenario.

Sassylovesbooks · 09/10/2026 19:11

In short, yes he's controlling. He asks you to change your clothes, forbids you from going to pubs/clubs etc without him, is jealous of reels that your sister sends you. All of this is controlling behaviour. You shouldn't have to change yourself or behaviour to appease someone else.

Your boyfriend has zero right to dictate what you do, who you see, what you wear or what you watch.

End the relationship, because his behaviour will escalate.

AttilaTheMeerkat · 09/10/2026 19:16

Be single and do not enter into any more relationships until your boundaries are a lot healthier than they are now. At 18 the world should be your oyster. I am concerned that this person is the latest in a line of crap boyfriends. You are barely out of childhood yourself. Love yourself for a change and do not think that a man will change for you.

ilovelamp82 · 09/10/2026 19:18

Well done for recognising the signs so early on. This will only get worse and worse. The fact that you're double checking with people on the internet, what you already know is wrong, gives you an insight into how confused you will be and not trust your own thoughts in years to come. The amount of people that would give anything to have jumped ship at this point in the relationship instead of making excuses for their behaviour and end up in it for years, or decades, wasting their lives and becoming a shadow of the person they were.

Leave. You will find a healthy relationship. Well done for recognising it and questioning it. Now believe us - this isn't salvageable. You can and will find a better relationship than this. Don't waste your life with this.

Bridgertonisbest · 09/10/2026 19:40

Im Mother to an 18 year old boy. If I thought he was treating his girlfriend in this way, I’d tell her mother myself.

get away from him quick!

Pokemum76 · 09/10/2026 19:48

So much great insight & advice. Wish I had Mumsnet when I was 18!

Ellie56 · 09/10/2026 19:48

OMG he's a controlling twat. Just dump him. You can do so much better.

Ah I remember this when I was 18. Intense guys who just needed me to be understanding of his insecurities. The more I tried to appease, the more he took.

Until one day he tried to throw me over a staircase because I laughed at his friends joke.

You are younger than my youngest child. One day you would kill to have the life and youth you wasted on divvys back. Do yourself a favour now and give yourself an early Christmas present. Confide in your parents that you're doing it, because you'll probably see the love bombing, suicide threats and angry side in a cycle that'll melt your head and might need the back up.

flippertygibbet4 · 09/10/2026 20:13

End it now. And don't go back. You are worth so much more. Value yourself!!! You are awesome!!! Don't let this boy drag you down. End it now xxx

ForLimeHiker · 09/10/2026 20:14

Run for the absolute hills and do not look back. You need to end it, block, delete and cut all contact. Boys who start like that do not grow up to be good men. Speaking from experience as someone who started where you are and spent 4 years putting up with utter shit. Get out now!

Sodthesystem · 09/10/2026 20:29

Run honey. It is never ok for a man to tell you what to wear. Never excuse crappy behaviour as immaturity or insecurity. It is control, pure and simple. You are not responsible for his issues. If indeed, he even has them. Many abusers claim to be insecure in order to get you to pity them and excuse their bs.

Best Advise to live by:
Beware anyone who gets you stuck on a merry go round of “prove your goodness/loyalty/innocence/truth to me” and you can’t ever seem to find “the right words” to do so. It’s becuase there are.no.right.words. Because this person doesn’t want there to be. They want you trapped looking inwards trying to fix the situation instead of realising they are a massive prick and running for the hills.

AvidHazelFox · 09/10/2026 20:42

Heylittlesongbird · 09/10/2026 18:30

Honestly, these are the best most care free years of your life. You should be having fun and not worrying about stuff like this. Just get rid of him and enjoy yourself.

This!

SoVeryVeryBored · 09/10/2026 20:55

Yes, he’s a controlling manipulative dick. Dump him and up your standards.
