Was it inappropriate to use the bathroom bin for a sanitary pad?

I am working in small company. We had staff party at someone house and I was drunk but I would say I do remember everything to this point. I get along with my team very well.

I feel like there is rumours after this. I am pretty sure. I did probably put my used sanitary pad ( no periods just everyday use ones) in provided bin in bathroom after using toilet. It was a male who ones the house. If I would of been sober I probably would of lost my tracks better -I feel like it got unwrapped. I feel like he have cleaned the bin and been told about it to others like "who does that" and some people do some crazy things"there is some nicknames called out. It is background gossip.

I have confronted him by asking if there is something you wanna say please do. Says there is not and that's that. Been one more comment after that I feel. I didn't say myself anything as well. Just that if there is some talks I am thinking it is childish and immature. And to ignore me if he is not saying anything behind my back.

I feel so depressed as I was a respected in my team and this situation have brought me so down. I try to keep my head up as I think they are wrong to initiate females like that as it is natural thing.

I am starting to overthink did I do Something else but to be honest I am quite sure that was it and my brain is just starting to play trick on me.

Was I wrong doing it?

It's a very common mistake amongst native English speakers.

Exactly

If we're going by that mistake, OP is far more likely to be native English than not

Native english???

No. Lazy or misunderstood english maybe.

The shortened form for would have is would’ve, the apostrophe stands for the missing letters - ha. Unfortunately, many people presume would’ve translates to would of.

HTH

I didn't say that's correct English. I disagreed that op is ESOL. I don't think I met ESOL who writes "of" and I know lots of us,. But native speakers... Seen that even on director level....

bottomlypotts7 · 18/09/2026 07:55

I use the everyday panty liners, get heavy discharge especially during ovulation and I’d be changing my pants multiple times if I didn’t.

But yeah I wouldn’t leave one in someone’s bin unless it was wrapped thoroughly. It’s quite juvenile of them to make an issue out of it, you could just be brave and nip it in the bud with something like ‘guys it’s just a pad, have you never seen one before?’

If you just chucked it in not wrapped up that's grim.

oh give over!

The bin was lined.

likelysuspect · 18/09/2026 08:01

You can wrap a pad in toilet tissue as tight as you like but it can still unwrap itself.

The word grim needs banning.

LBFseBrom · 18/09/2026 08:12

Would you 'of' indeed?

A bathroom bin is for that purpose, I presume you wrapped it. You did nothing wrong, ignore.

If the host is talking about it, shame on him, ridiculous man. How old is he? If you invite women to your house they are going to think as you did.

Do not get drunk at parties at the homes of colleagues, that is bad form and I would not be surprised if that were talked about.

Why I changed pad there - if I was sober I would of not never done it there or lost my track better.
If the pad was wrapped than it is all good- as I said it might of been not wrapped and it would of been straight to see when started to change the bin.
It is a liner- not the period pad. I don't use them every day, just some days when feels nessecary.
Sure it was grim and might be disgusting.
Situation is that I was drunk and it might of been unwrapped. How should I feel in this situation is the main question. When sober I am very careful with this stuff

Too many ‘ifs’ here - so many things would have to be true for it to have been unrolled, lying upwards at the top of the bin, toilet roll not on top of it anymore. Then they would have to know it was you when there were also two other women around. Also, they could be talking about anything.

Also, you don’t talk about the contents of your bathroom bin. It’s a bin!! Just empty it and keep quiet. Even if that is what they are gossiping about, that’s so immature. More fool them. Just rise above it: it’s nothing to be ashamed of. I know what the inside of a non-period sanitary towel looks like and it’s not really something to talk about. What silly men (though I doubt this is what they are even talking about).

AgnesX · 18/09/2026 08:19

I'm not sure why you'd change a panty liner - you did say you weren't having a period - while at a party or leave it unwrapped in someone's bin tbh.
Generally I'd say it's not the done thing.

Minasama · 18/09/2026 08:19

Where else are you supposed to put used sanitary towels? Of course you acted appropriately.

I can't get past someone using a pad for no reason? When not on their period? Is this normal? If so it's really unhealthy for down there... full of microplastics and chemicals. Surely most people don't wear them every day for everyday use? Shocked to see nobody else has asked about this. Anyway no it's no problem and your colleague is a dick. It's literally a bathroom bin!

Never heard of panty liners ,what do you think they're for?

OP - moving forward you should really not get so pissed with work colleagues that you don't know what you've done with your sanitary pad. Things could've been a lot worse.

Perfect28 · 18/09/2026 06:08

You know these are a total marketing ploy right? You don't need a bit of plastic in your knickers to 'be clean'

Like many women who’ve had children I wear pant liners to catch the wee that leaks out when I sneeze or laugh.

there are other reasons why women use pant liners. That’s mine

It's a lazy native english.

ESOL is typically taught grammar-first, so this error doesn't make sense to make in learner's eyes.
Native way of learning is by listening, sound first, and some people get stuck in their ways.

Strange how so many women commenting in this thread have never heard of panty liners. Supermarkets have had shelves full of them for years.

People have heard of them. They’re just pointing out that they’re unnecessary ‘to be clean’.

hamsterchump · 18/09/2026 08:30

It's completely fine, what else is that bin for? Ignore them OP, this guy sounds like definitely a misogynist and probably an incel so you can safely discount his opinion on everything as irrelevant

Or if you want to have a bit of fun, start a rumour that he opens up sanitary products left in his bathroom bin, ugh what for? To sniff them or wank with them or something presumably? How else would he even have noticed it enough to know what it was? He's disgusting.

I agree and was wondering the same. Why use a sanitary pad when not on your period and why dispose of it when you’re still out?

The writing and grammar of this post are difficult to understand but I agree with others: you have done nothing wrong. Stop asking for validation and carry on with your work. This will blow over.

I'd agree it is a marketing-based bad habit to do it every day "just to feel clean".

However, there are many situations where liners make sense - waiting for periods to start to catch the beginning, having stronger discharges in some phase of life/month and replacing it a few times a day, mitigating a small temporary incontinence risk. It isn't imperceivable, that some need it and some don't, and the unlucky in this area ones might need it long term

‘Being clean’ refers to catching leaking wee, menopause sweat, excess discharge and lots of other things.

you are lucky not to have a need for them but they are necessary for many

GreyCarpet · 18/09/2026 09:25

Its completely normal to put rubbish in a bin.

It's completely normal to put bathroom related rubbish in a bathroom bin.

I'm not sure what else there is to say about the matter.

SpottyPyjama · 18/09/2026 09:51

It’s gross to make strangers deal with the contents of your pants. Either use proper sanitary bags so that you know you have wrapped properly, or ideally wrap and take home with you.

it’s no different to when friends with babies come over in my mind. The default is always that they take their well wrapped pissy shitty nappies home with them, unless I offer to let them use my bin, because they have manners.

This is an outlier, fringe opinion about sanitary wear. Most people will think it's entirely normal to use a bathroom bin for its intended purpose.

PonkyPonky · 18/09/2026 07:02

No one wants to see a pad sunny side up in the bin, it’s gross. Please roll them and wrap in tissue in future. It’s immature of them to talk about it and embarrass you but I’d be privately very cross at having to clear that up after you if you did that in my house.

Same here!

Sugarnspicenallthingsnaice · 18/09/2026 10:28

God, the number of patronising women on here who think they're experts on how other women should manage their hygiene.

Mind your own business!

DeftGoldHedgehog · 18/09/2026 11:11

Passementerie · 18/09/2026 07:09

Respectfully, OP, you still sound a bit drunk or strange. You wear pads daily ‘to be clean’ and are ‘sad’ it had the ‘opposite reaction’ ? I mean, did you think two random male colleagues were going to congratulate you on your genital hygiene?

You sound drunk and strange. Are you a man? It's not weird to wear pant liners if it makes you feel more comfortable.
