Woman’s top in partners washing and now he’s accusing ME of cheating

I genuinely don’t know what to think about this and would appreciate some opinions.
I’ve been with my DP a long time. He stayed at a friend’s for a couple of days as we needed some space we have been bickering over silly things, we sorted that issue out and yesterday he needed to catch up on some washing.
He took some washing from the basket, but also had a bag of washing in his car from when he’d been away. He washed it and put it out on the line.
Amongst his washing was a woman’s vest.
I asked him where the washing had come from and he said it was from the bag in his car from when he’d stayed away. So obviously I asked him how a woman’s top had ended up in there.
Instead of just explaining it, he immediately got really defensive and aggressive and started insinuating that I knew exactly where the top had come from.
He then started suggesting that I’d had a woman staying at the house while he’d been away and was basically accusing me of cheating on him with women / being bisexual / having lesbian relationships. This is not the first time he has accused me of this!
I was completely baffled because I have absolutely no idea where the top came from. I was asking HIM because I wanted to know.
This morning I brought it up again because I wanted him to explain what exactly he was insinuating about me, as he has never had any reason to think I’m bi sexual or unfaithful other than a few years ago when we would go out together and random woman on the odd occasion have complimented me on my looks/body, he said I should of told them to leave me alone and not entertain it, the only other incident was my friend did tap my bum years ago when she was tipsy jokingly complimenting my behind, and I addressed this with her afterwards it’s not happened since.

Last week I stayed at a friends house I never go out anymore but it was an overdue catch up we ended up sharing a taxi and I stayed over , the next day he saw my underwear in the washing basket and my discharge was more noticeable than usual and he brought it up I explained calmly that it’s due to being peri menopausal and the fact we had a slip up that week and had to take emergency contraception.

He completely lost it this morning.
Shouting, screaming, swearing, calling me degrading names, I never called him no names.
He doesn’t normally speak to me like that and I was honestly shocked.
In the end I told him to leave. I said I’m not having any man speak to me like that and kicked him out.
He’s now been texting me for hours, still insisting that I know where the top came from and bringing up my underwear again and trying to turn the whole thing around on me. It’s almost like he’s trying to convince me that I’M the one who’s done something wrong.
I accept there could be an innocent explanation for the top. That’s not even necessarily my biggest concern at this point.
It’s the reaction.
If your partner found a woman’s top in your washing, surely you’d expect them to ask where it came from? Why immediately accuse them of cheating and then become verbally abusive when they ask you about it?
Am I missing something here?
Would you be more suspicious about the top itself, or more concerned about his reaction?
What would you do?

Please leave the relationship and don’t look back, you will have this for the rest of your life, when it’s not about this it will be something else. Please walk away

Mumtotornadoes · 08/09/2026 03:54
  1. Obviously he's been cheating on you
  2. He's abusing you.
  3. Change the locks immediately

I’m a bit concerned for you @Anastas1athat you seem more focused on the fact he has now threatened to find another woman, rather than the deeply disturbing issue of him inspecting your knickers and the disgusting things he has said to you.

Please consider getting some support to understand what a healthy relationship looks like and why you have remained with this abusive man https://freedomprogramme.co.uk/

Yes to this. OP, you don’t seem to understand just how insane and fucked up all this is.

jinn2025 · 08/09/2026 05:12

Throw him back in

Xanhi · 08/09/2026 06:06

Everything you say about him sounds awful. He is a total weirdo checking your pants. Yuck!

MrsVBS · 08/09/2026 06:13

I think the top is the least of your concerns.

DozyCrow · 08/09/2026 06:25

Sorry you've gone through this OP. He sounds deranged. I hope you won't be persuaded to take him back if he tries it on with the flowers and begging again.

Good to hear you're changing the locks too. That needs to be done urgently. If you don't yet have one, consider a video doorbell, or one of those window cams that go on the inside of a window - can't be tampered with from the outside.

lorelaineblu · 08/09/2026 06:33

What you’re missing here is that he’s trying to shift the focus on you when he’s probably the one who needs an explanation as to why that woman top was in the bag. He’s aggressive as this is a technique to scare you and not having questions to answer. Block him, be ruthless and just make sure he does not come nowhere near you as this is a dangerous man.

XMissPlacedX · 08/09/2026 06:50

The classic script, don’t fall for it. He has shown his true colours anyway with the abusive name calling.

Icecreamisthebest · 08/09/2026 06:56

Of course it hurts @Anastas1a but that does not mean you should not end it. You will feel sad and upset for a while. It's only natural. But over time the hurt will go and you will heal. Allow yourself to go through this process.

Focus on yourself right now, not what he is doing. He's clearly good at lying so no matter what he says, you can't believe him.

Change the locks, delete and block and let your family and friends know and get some support. You will get through this.

Forget about the top and concentrate on getting rid of this man permanently. Look up DARVO, it's classic abusive behaviour.

Then look up JADE and stop explaining or justifying your night out.

All this.

he sounds insane. Looking through your underwear in the laundry basket and commenting??? His behaviour is all so wrong.

He sounds guilty of cheating but that is almost irrelevant now. The extreme verbal abuse is a reason in itself to end this relationship.

I agree
I’m sorry op. I had a baby with a similar man.

everything gets turned around and they use constant logical fallacies to detract from what you’re trying to say. They have no accountability or empathy or genuine care for your feelings, they only care about avoiding hard things and maintaining power.

I can’t see this getting better I think you should escape and give up on closure or working out what exactly happened and why.

This! He's revolting. I wouldn't be justifying my knickers to anyone! Fuck off you cretin.

I’m a “dirty human being” apparently for having natural bodily functions and being with the same man for half my life

It’s called projection. He’s accusing you of things that he is /had done. He is a dirty cheater.

Bluenotgreen · 08/09/2026 08:04

He’s a really disgusting and horrible man.

Please block him and look forward to a lovely peaceful future without this piece of shit.

fruitbrewhaha · 08/09/2026 08:08

He sounds awful.

MushMonster · 08/09/2026 08:10

What would you do?
RUN FOR THE HILLS!!!!!!
This man is not normal.
Well done on kicking him out. Now, block his phone number. Pack his shit and drop it at his parents and never see him again.

selffellatingouroborosofhate · 08/09/2026 00:10

What does JADE stand for? Search engine just gives jewelry.

Never feel you need to
Justify
Argue
Defend Yourself
Explain

When dealing with narcissists usually this is the advice. Keep any interactions to practical issues that absolutely have to be worked out and don’t get drawn in to any wider conversations basically. There is no point as they won’t see reason and it just exposes you to more of their nonsense.

He uses his rage, anger and accusations to keep you under control, to keep you from questioning him and his behaviour. So that he can continue to behave exactly as he wants. It's a well established pattern of behaviour amongst abusive men. It benefits him at your expense. That's because he doesn't actually give a shit about you other than for how you can make him feel. He's very unlikely to change. This is how he does relationships.

It's a bit like how sometimes you get a dangerous dog that keeps biting people. You could analyse why the dog turned out that way - is it genetics, is it poor training, is it a traumatic experience, does it just enjoy f*cking biting people?

But at the end of the day that bastard needs to be PTS or at the least, just kept away from people to prevent it from hurting them.

Unfortunately some men are also like this. They enjoy and benefit from their behaviour and/or they just aren't wired right, just like a dog that is too aggressive.

We'd all be better off if they could be kept in special zoos away from others and especially women - like rabid animals. Definitely don't keep one in your home.

You owe him nothing - he's totally selfish so he's already taken good care of his own needs throughout your relationship. Now is the time to take care of yourself and be rid of him for good. Suggest you look into resources like the freedom programme to understand what you've been through.

So very true!!! the ‘special zoos’ and ‘rabid animals’ comment did make me smile for the first time since all this happened thank you ☺️

he speaks with conviction as he’s probably a sociopath who’s trying to manipulate you and convince you’re in the wrong. Just be ruthless and get rid of him.
