Woman’s top in partners washing and now he’s accusing ME of cheating

I genuinely don’t know what to think about this and would appreciate some opinions.
I’ve been with my DP a long time. He stayed at a friend’s for a couple of days as we needed some space we have been bickering over silly things, we sorted that issue out and yesterday he needed to catch up on some washing.
He took some washing from the basket, but also had a bag of washing in his car from when he’d been away. He washed it and put it out on the line.
Amongst his washing was a woman’s vest.
I asked him where the washing had come from and he said it was from the bag in his car from when he’d stayed away. So obviously I asked him how a woman’s top had ended up in there.
Instead of just explaining it, he immediately got really defensive and aggressive and started insinuating that I knew exactly where the top had come from.
He then started suggesting that I’d had a woman staying at the house while he’d been away and was basically accusing me of cheating on him with women / being bisexual / having lesbian relationships. This is not the first time he has accused me of this!
I was completely baffled because I have absolutely no idea where the top came from. I was asking HIM because I wanted to know.
This morning I brought it up again because I wanted him to explain what exactly he was insinuating about me, as he has never had any reason to think I’m bi sexual or unfaithful other than a few years ago when we would go out together and random woman on the odd occasion have complimented me on my looks/body, he said I should of told them to leave me alone and not entertain it, the only other incident was my friend did tap my bum years ago when she was tipsy jokingly complimenting my behind, and I addressed this with her afterwards it’s not happened since.

Last week I stayed at a friends house I never go out anymore but it was an overdue catch up we ended up sharing a taxi and I stayed over , the next day he saw my underwear in the washing basket and my discharge was more noticeable than usual and he brought it up I explained calmly that it’s due to being peri menopausal and the fact we had a slip up that week and had to take emergency contraception.

He completely lost it this morning.
Shouting, screaming, swearing, calling me degrading names, I never called him no names.
He doesn’t normally speak to me like that and I was honestly shocked.
In the end I told him to leave. I said I’m not having any man speak to me like that and kicked him out.
He’s now been texting me for hours, still insisting that I know where the top came from and bringing up my underwear again and trying to turn the whole thing around on me. It’s almost like he’s trying to convince me that I’M the one who’s done something wrong.
I accept there could be an innocent explanation for the top. That’s not even necessarily my biggest concern at this point.
It’s the reaction.
If your partner found a woman’s top in your washing, surely you’d expect them to ask where it came from? Why immediately accuse them of cheating and then become verbally abusive when they ask you about it?
Am I missing something here?
Would you be more suspicious about the top itself, or more concerned about his reaction?
What would you do?

👆 So the trash took itself out! 👏 Good riddance to bad rubbish. Hope you're okay, OP. Have a well earned glass of wine, cup of tea, whatever, and enjoy the peace! 👍

Well done getting clear of him.

Pashazade · 07/09/2026 17:48

Well as he’s gone and taken all his stuff then block him every where and as an added precaution change the locks or use bolts when you’re home as he’s sounding a bit batshit.

Methinks the gentleman doth protest too much.

sunnyfeet · 07/09/2026 18:04

I totally agree

bigboykitty · 07/09/2026 18:08

He knows where the top came from. Examining your knickers and accusing you of cheating is abusive and deranged. Stop arguing with this abusive cheat and tell him you're done. He's pathetic.

Alphavilla · 07/09/2026 18:09

He’s gone! Thank god for that. Im pleased for you OP. Never let him back in.

VerityUnreasonble · 07/09/2026 18:11

Now would be a really good time to change the locks.

MorphandMindy · 07/09/2026 18:23

Yeah this is classic projection OP. He’s in the wrong and he knows it.

The anger is real, but it’s directed at you for having the gall to challenge him and make him feel a shred of discomfort, and the guilt/discomfort/irritation at having to change up his lifestyle is fuelling his reaction.

anything to put you on the back foot and get you to come grovelling back and never challenge him again.

He’s blocked now, it hurts but I can’t put up with all this, I spent nearly two faithful decades with him and he already talking about being with other women

Please break up with this abusive prick.

TishHope · 07/09/2026 18:38

What a horrible horrible man. Be careful OP - it's too good to be true that he will just fuck off into the sunset. He will be back at some point. As a PP said, change the locks and do not hesitate to call the police if/when he rocks up at 3am shouting the odds and trying to get into your house. On no account let him in - the police immediately.

Then he's going to try every trick in the book to destabilise you and make you backtrack. He'll tell people he left because you're cheating. Expect suicide threats at some point. Just keep him blocked. It's a pitiful end to a long relationship, but he sounds like a nightmare.

Sunshineandgrapefruit · 07/09/2026 18:40

You have done the right thing. His reaction was designed to deflect and make you focus on defending yourself rather than carrying on with your quiet understandable line of questioning. It worked in that you were getting tied up in knots about his accusations. As other posters have said he was hoping you would back off and apologise and go crawling back so he would then know he could do this whenever he has ant d and you wouldn't challenge him. Instead you have called his bluff and held your head up high and you will be happier for it even though it may not seem like that now.

Anastas1a · 07/09/2026 18:51

Thanks for the advice I appreciate you all taking the time to share your thoughts, I anticipate a lot of unstable behaviour to follow I will be changing the locks xx

Two decades? Jeeze, I'm sorry @Anastas1a That has to hurt a lot but you deserve so so much better than this.

and be prepared to discover a lot of things you don't want to. Please protect yoruself financially, fast.

Anastas1a · 07/09/2026 14:52

So sorry you had to go through that gut is telling me something is not right also

Yep. Stay safe! He will realise what he’s about to lose

FannybygaslightinGovan · 07/09/2026 19:46

I'm so sorry this has happened. I know it doesn't feel like it right now but you will be so much happier without him. He's a fucking freak of a man.

You deserve so much better that having to live with that! Know your worth.

And as for the 'no man will ever stick around' shit, why would you want another man if that's how they behave. Get yourself two wee cats and live happily ever after 🐈 🐈 🐈 ❤️ 😁

Electricsausages · 07/09/2026 22:05

Well done OP 🙌

Jazzagal500 · 07/09/2026 23:07

I’m a bit concerned for you @Anastas1athat you seem more focused on the fact he has now threatened to find another woman, rather than the deeply disturbing issue of him inspecting your knickers and the disgusting things he has said to you.

Please consider getting some support to understand what a healthy relationship looks like and why you have remained with this abusive man https://freedomprogramme.co.uk/

OMGDidYouSayThat · 07/09/2026 23:27

Sounds like a deflection tactic to me but you did the right thing chucking him out anyway, no one should be spoken to like that.

WinterBlues26 · 07/09/2026 13:32

Forget about the top and concentrate on getting rid of this man permanently. Look up DARVO, it's classic abusive behaviour.

Then look up JADE and stop explaining or justifying your night out.

What does JADE stand for? Search engine just gives jewelry.

BibbityBoppityTwo · 08/09/2026 00:16

OneDreamyAquaEagle · 07/09/2026 13:46

Classic DARVO.

Was just about to post this myself. Over the top counter accusations is a massive red flag that what you suspect is true.

MooseMuff · 08/09/2026 00:21

Gonk123 · 07/09/2026 13:56

Who looks at their partners dirty underwear seriously!

This! He's revolting. I wouldn't be justifying my knickers to anyone! Fuck off you cretin.
