Woman’s top in partners washing and now he’s accusing ME of cheating

I genuinely don’t know what to think about this and would appreciate some opinions.
I’ve been with my DP a long time. He stayed at a friend’s for a couple of days as we needed some space we have been bickering over silly things, we sorted that issue out and yesterday he needed to catch up on some washing.
He took some washing from the basket, but also had a bag of washing in his car from when he’d been away. He washed it and put it out on the line.
Amongst his washing was a woman’s vest.
I asked him where the washing had come from and he said it was from the bag in his car from when he’d stayed away. So obviously I asked him how a woman’s top had ended up in there.
Instead of just explaining it, he immediately got really defensive and aggressive and started insinuating that I knew exactly where the top had come from.
He then started suggesting that I’d had a woman staying at the house while he’d been away and was basically accusing me of cheating on him with women / being bisexual / having lesbian relationships. This is not the first time he has accused me of this!
I was completely baffled because I have absolutely no idea where the top came from. I was asking HIM because I wanted to know.
This morning I brought it up again because I wanted him to explain what exactly he was insinuating about me, as he has never had any reason to think I’m bi sexual or unfaithful other than a few years ago when we would go out together and random woman on the odd occasion have complimented me on my looks/body, he said I should of told them to leave me alone and not entertain it, the only other incident was my friend did tap my bum years ago when she was tipsy jokingly complimenting my behind, and I addressed this with her afterwards it’s not happened since.

Last week I stayed at a friends house I never go out anymore but it was an overdue catch up we ended up sharing a taxi and I stayed over , the next day he saw my underwear in the washing basket and my discharge was more noticeable than usual and he brought it up I explained calmly that it’s due to being peri menopausal and the fact we had a slip up that week and had to take emergency contraception.

He completely lost it this morning.
Shouting, screaming, swearing, calling me degrading names, I never called him no names.
He doesn’t normally speak to me like that and I was honestly shocked.
In the end I told him to leave. I said I’m not having any man speak to me like that and kicked him out.
He’s now been texting me for hours, still insisting that I know where the top came from and bringing up my underwear again and trying to turn the whole thing around on me. It’s almost like he’s trying to convince me that I’M the one who’s done something wrong.
I accept there could be an innocent explanation for the top. That’s not even necessarily my biggest concern at this point.
It’s the reaction.
If your partner found a woman’s top in your washing, surely you’d expect them to ask where it came from? Why immediately accuse them of cheating and then become verbally abusive when they ask you about it?
Am I missing something here?
Would you be more suspicious about the top itself, or more concerned about his reaction?
What would you do?

Inspecting your underwear for signs of arousal and then screaming at you? You do realise this is incredibly abusive don’t you. It’s not normal

Forget about the top and concentrate on getting rid of this man permanently. Look up DARVO, it's classic abusive behaviour.

Then look up JADE and stop explaining or justifying your night out.

I will look this up never heard of DARVO

It’s made me feel really embarrassed he said that they are “activity knickers” and I must of been aroused

This is extraordinary behaviour.

You have one sick husband there and I'd lay a lot of money he's been cheating.

Which is irrelevant almost now he's been so verbally abusive.

He sounds unstable and potentially liable to lash out; please get rid of him.

chirrupybird · 07/09/2026 14:28

It is all pretty irrelevant now, whether he was unfaithful, whether he thinks you were unfaithful doesn't matter any more the relationship is over. Neither of you can live like this. And examining your dirty knickers is gross or a weird fetish. Do you check his pants for signs of 'activity'? Time to call it a day.

Never would dream of it as I’m grown enough to know its normal for men and women to have signs of bodily fluids on underwear from time to time without assuming anything

Call the police if he gets aggressive again.
Being unmarried makes it easy to dump him, do you own the house?

Yes it’s my house thankfully he was scary today and something tells me it won’t be an amicable Separation I have tried to leave last year when I found vile messages in his phone to another woman

He’s cheating. My ex drove himself apoplectic once because I kissed a friend on the cheek. Meanwhile he was seeing prostitutes and active on hook up apps. Classic DARVO.

Mooseylooseyloo · 07/09/2026 14:49

Classic deflection. He knows exactly where the top came from but he couldnt think of a good excuse in the moment so he just turned it straight around onto you. Leave this man for your own good. You will look back in years to come and be thankful.

Even if he isn't cheating, he doesn't like you never mind love you. It took strength to kick him out, you are strong.

Protect yourself. If he comes back, don't let him in, phone the police. His behaviour is only going to escalate and you won't be safe. Can you get your friend to come stay with you for a few days?

Moveoverdarlin · 07/09/2026 15:02

He noticed the discharge in your underwear and commented that it’s different to normal??? Jesus. I could do a foot long turd in mine and my husband wouldn’t notice.

Whynottryagain · 07/09/2026 15:05

I agree with the first response.

Why are you tying yourself in knots trying to work out if you are unreasonable about the top?

He is verbally abusive.
You don't trust each other.
You both suspect the other of cheating.

It sounds like a miserable relationship you'd be better off out of.

pigmygoatsinjumpers · 07/09/2026 15:08

He is abusive and batshit. Leave him.

Alphavilla · 07/09/2026 15:23

His knicker checking is disgusting. I would also bet he’s cheating, hence the violent projecting. He has form for texting other women. What’s there to love? LTB

Hm.

Please plan .... if it's not needed then good, and if it is needed then it'll be bloody useful.

Do you have a very large father or brother who could be with you when you tell him it's over?

I think you need to be very sure he can't destroy vital paperwork, heirlooms, things that mean a lot. I'm sorry to be so suspicious but I've seen too much by now to have easy faith that all will go smoothly, and some people can be vicious when the results of their behaviour come home to roost.

"trust in God but tie your camel up first". Hope that it'll be okay, but take sensible precautions.

Elieza · 07/09/2026 15:45

he sounds unhinged.

get an std test and fingers crossed your morning after pill worked.

raspberryrisotto · 07/09/2026 16:06

I am genuinely shocked. He’s awful.

please do LTB.

Screamingabdabz · 07/09/2026 16:09

Oh just tell him to do one op. Agree to everything he says about you (in a sarcastic voice ‘oh yeah I am. I’m a raging lesbian. You got me’) roll your eyes and tell him fuckity bye. He’s a loser. You don’t need or deserve this shit. Choose a better life for yourself.

Sunbringer · 07/09/2026 16:20

He’s obviously cheated and is now trying to reverse the accusation. He sounds mental anyway so good riddance.

I can’t believe you thought him commenting on your discharge in your underwear was normal or ok

He said he put an item in Washing basket and noticed it! Then called me names and tried to humiliate me over it

Thanks for replies, I honestly wasn’t sure if I was going mad, I had my bloods done recently which indicated I was in menopause. On reflection I did not approach him about the top aggressively just asked for explanation there may well be an innocent reason but his response is diabolical, he have continued to accuse me of cheating and he has had this strange obsession with me being bisexual for years with no proof or evidence just all in his head, I’ve reassured him countless times he then agrees to believe me but every time we argue he throws accusations around. He had an addiction last year and used that as an excuse for him texting women inappropriately i tried to leave he sent big bouquets of flowers daily and cried in my lap begging to help him, I persevered and forgave him, but I did warn him he broke my trust so there will be times I may feel insecure, he said he understood and will just have to hold it. He sorted the addiction out and been working really hard, was always home and not out much etc…,Well the first real test was yesterday when I asked about the top and he went beserk, he now ‘hates me’ and I can’t even write the things he called me but it’s out of order, he collected his things whilst I was at work giving it the big talk saying no man will ever stick around me and I will make anyone unstable etc he still stands by his story that the top must of come from my ‘stinking side piece’ and is extremely butt-hurt because now he has to find another mug to shack up with.
