Is a thank you expected for cash wedding gifts nowadays?

What is the etiquette these days for thanking people who give you money in lieu of wedding gifts these days?
Obviously I know most people have already got their houses etc by the time they get married these days and it’s very normal to ask for money for honeymoon or towards a bigger purchase rather than towels or toasters like it was whwn I got married. The last couple of weddings I have been to have included an online means of donating this money. I am always happy to do this but neither of the bride/grooms have sent even a message to say thank you.

Am I being old fashioned expecting a thank you? My partner thinks you shouldn’t give to expect a thank you whereas I think it’s common courtesy and it isn’t difficult to ping an email or message via messenger/text.

I send a ‘thank you’ for any gift received. Its the bride/grooms choice to invite me to their wedding, it’s also their choice to have as lavish a wedding as they wish…I still would like a ‘thank you’ for the gift they have probably asked for!

I find it incredibly rude to not thank someone for a gift, I’m not expecting a card, a text would be enough. I’ve been to a few weddings where there was no thank you for a gift or for money we gave them. It’s just made me think they are rube tbh!

I send one in case people get upset but I don’t care if I don’t get one and wouldn’t notice. Cards normally go straight in the bin once I’ve read them so it’s a waste of money.

I hate doing them - they’re so cringe. ‘Dear Aunt Mary, thank you for the lovely towels. We enjoyed drying ourselves with them’ - it’s all so fake and such a waste of time. The bride and groom have already treated you to a slap up meal and a disco. What more do you need?

Again , do you not write/email/text the bride and groom for their hospitality? If so , surely a thank you for your gift is in order, if you don't, then I understand where you are coming from - sadly.

No, I don’t do that. Nobody I know does that. You’d spend your life writing cards thanking people for their hospitality. I say thank you for the invitation when I respond, and then at the event I might tell the bride that she looks lovely and the food was delicious, but I wouldn’t write a thank you card after the event, and I didn’t receive any after my wedding either. So you’re saying a wedding should have 5 card exchanges?

The invitation
The response
The card with the gift
The ‘Thank you for inviting us to your wedding. We had a lovely time. Didn’t grandma look great doing the hokey kokey?’
The ‘Thank you for the iron. I’m teaching Gerald how to use it on his plus fours - Ho Ho’

That seems excessive.

Just gotten married. We’ll be sending cards to thank people for cash gifts, other kinds of gifts (including cards with simple well wishes), contributions to the wedding etc.

anything else would seem incredibly rude to me.

my husband and I are currently debating whether we should send thank you cards to everyone who attended (to thank them for attending)… my gut says yes.🙈🫣

Why is that excessive,? That is only one extra text/email/ letter from each side. You presumably do not thank people if they entertain you, fair enough.
