Is a thank you expected for cash wedding gifts nowadays?

What is the etiquette these days for thanking people who give you money in lieu of wedding gifts these days?
Obviously I know most people have already got their houses etc by the time they get married these days and it’s very normal to ask for money for honeymoon or towards a bigger purchase rather than towels or toasters like it was whwn I got married. The last couple of weddings I have been to have included an online means of donating this money. I am always happy to do this but neither of the bride/grooms have sent even a message to say thank you.

Am I being old fashioned expecting a thank you? My partner thinks you shouldn’t give to expect a thank you whereas I think it’s common courtesy and it isn’t difficult to ping an email or message via messenger/text.

It's very basic manners to send a thankyou, but I've sent gifts recently and never received an acknowledgement or thankyou. It's very poor.

Supersimkin7 · 02/08/2026 20:47

Of course you thank the giver.

Apart from anything else to say you’ve got it, unless it’s a charity donation or other payment you can see online.

Having said that I’ve just realised I didn’t get thanked for the last one I sent.

I think it has died out a lot, like sending Christmas cards. I don't necessarily think that's a bad thing, to be honest.

With all due respect, I have no interest in a random photo of another couple getting married. It'd go straight into the bin.

I don't think people intend to be rude, it's just not as done anymore maybe? None of my nieces and nephews sent them out. I wasn't offended. I know they were grateful for what they got.

caringcarer · 02/08/2026 20:55

The bride and groom might be waiting for wedding photos to send thank you card. My niece had a wedding photo printed on to thank you cards and she sent those to anyone who gave them a gift or money.

Likewise. I have no interest in thank you cards and, if a couple want to send a thank you, would prefer a text.

hahabahbag · 02/08/2026 21:27

Yes a thank you but it can be in text or email form

cupfinalchaos · 02/08/2026 21:31

Disgusting to not acknowledge a present even a one line text. Personally I’d send a card.

Orders76 · 02/08/2026 23:54

Do people think it would be rude to send a message saying something like 'gift of monetary value x is at this store, just in case the card was misplaced'

SquirrelGG · 03/08/2026 02:33

I don't think there will ever be a time when a thank you in some form is not required for a gift of any kind. People who can't be bothered are just plain rude.

Myblueclematis · 03/08/2026 06:39

I sent a cheque to a relative who got married last year, I believe the money was used for the honeymoon.

It was a good couple of months later but I received a thank you card with a picture of the wedding that I had attended on it saying how much they appreciated the gift and to thank me for attending to help make the day special.

I think to have heard nothing at all would have been disappointing, it really is good manners to say thank you properly.

AlliuminBloom · 03/08/2026 06:49

I think a thank you should have the same form as the invitations, ie if elaborate personalised stationery was used for those, I would definitely expect a posted thank you. If invites were via a website for the wedding, I would expect a thank you posted there.

MadisonAvenue · 03/08/2026 14:19

I can think of nine weddings we’ve attended over the last few years where we’ve given a gift of money and only three have thanked us.

It’s basic manners to say thank you.

Yep. And they tend to cover their arses with flannel like ‘A gift should be freely given with no expectations, otherwise it’s performative’. And teach their kids this too. 🙄

BasiliskStare · 03/08/2026 14:39

Yes. The form may not be traditional ie email , text rather than letter or phone call , but I think it's just good manners to say thank you. Whether that's just because of my age - I don't know. & I'm not saying those who are younger than me don't have manners. You can be a bit thoughtless at any age.

muddyford · 03/08/2026 14:45

Should be saying thank you by any means. But I wasn't thanked for the last two wedding presents.

OrangeFlower14 · 03/08/2026 16:22

I think it's very rude not to send a thank you

people just seem to think rudeness is acceptable now and then it spreads

Boomer55 · 03/08/2026 16:24

I would expect a thank you. If I’d received a gift, I’d send a thank you. Good manners cost nothing. .

AnneElliott · 03/08/2026 16:25

Im with you op - but I didn’t get a thank you for the last 2 cash wedding gifts I made.

ExitPursuedByABare · 03/08/2026 16:26

Hell yes. Surely any gift should be acknowledged?

Poppystone · 03/08/2026 16:29

The last one I went to the bride put out a general thank you for coming to our magical day and for all your generous gifts on FB, no induvidual thank you. TBH I wasn't very impressed.

MrsBennetsPoorNervesAreBack · 03/08/2026 16:31

I was always taught that it was basic etiquette for people to say thank you for any gift, regardless of the value of the gift or the format in which it is given.

But I was also taught that gifts should be given freely and without any expectations from the recipient. So while I personally would always thank the gift giver, I don't tend to bother if people don't thank me - I give what I can in the hope that the recipient will like it, but I don't keep track of their response. Or lack thereof.

CountessBinface · 03/08/2026 16:53

Any gift, cash or otherwise, should trigger a 'thank you'. It need not be in the form of a pretty card. A text message, email or phone call is fine.

thisisrubbish · 03/08/2026 17:48

We went all the way to the States from Uk to a wedding. We gave a substantial cash gift, which we put into a card which was then put into a wedding box at the wedding venue. We have heard nothing! I am disappointed that there has been no acknowledgement of our gift! Apart from anything else we don’t even know if they actually got it.
Absolutely there should be a thank you for any gift no matter how much or what the gift is

beautifuldaytosavelives · 03/08/2026 18:02

Terrible form not to acknowledge. No acknowledgment of significant gift to a family wedding in
the last couple of years but enthusiastically thanked via message for a token bottle of fizz at a recent evening attendance. I know who I think has the better manners.

restingbitchface30 · 03/08/2026 18:35

I’ve been to 2 weddings in 3 years where we gave them cash and didn’t receive a thank you. It’s really rude imo. But not surprising considering the couples.
