Do I leave him? Husband constantly walking away from him responsibilities.

I’m at a point in my marriage where I honestly don’t know whether I want to stay anymore, and I’d really appreciate some outside perspectives.

My husband plays to gigs with his band three or four nights a week. I know it’s something he loves and I don’t want to be the person who stops him doing what makes him happy, but the reality is that his lifestyle puts a huge amount of strain on me.

I’m running my own business which we run together and is very much a two person operation, dealing with the house and dogs, and I feel like I’m constantly working or taking care of something. I’m exhausted to the point that I’m making mistakes with work because I’m so tired. But he gets to do all these amazing things while I hold up all his responsibilities.

The house is also constantly messy after him, he just dumps his stuff everywhere. I do deep cleans every week because I desperately want a calm, peaceful home, and it feels like I’m forever fighting to maintain it with him being so thoughtless. I feel like I’m sacrificing the peaceful, enjoyable life I want so that he can continue having the life he wants.

I’ve tried telling him how unhappy and overwhelmed I am, but I don’t feel heard. I feel unsupported, unseen and taken for granted. When I tell him I’m struggling and really not coping he says the problem is that I don’t have hobbies of my own, he makes my feel very invalid and doesn't take over so I can have some form of respite.

But I don’t feel like hobbies are the issue. I don’t feel bored or jealous that he has interests. I feel completely burnt out. I want enough time and energy to actually enjoy my life, I don't want it to pass me by, he's putting me in a situation I don't want to be in.

Recently I’ve found myself looking at rooms on SpareRoom and Airbnb and imagining going away by myself for a week, away from my husband, the dogs, the business and the mess he leaves behind just so I can have some peace and quiet and a tidy space where nobody needs anything from me.

I’m also questioning whether I still love him. At the moment he makes me deeply unhappy, and I feel trapped in a life where I’m constantly sacrificing while he gets to carry on doing what he wants and I'm left behind doing two people's jobs.

My mental health has become very poor and, at my lowest, there is no thought towards me no thanks, I feel like I'm locked out of my favourite rock show and everyone is having a good time except from me.

I don’t know whether I’m so exhausted and resentful that everything in the marriage currently feels worse, whether we need a temporary separation and some space, or whether this relationship has simply reached the end.

If you were in my position, what would you do?

Has anyone reached this level of resentment and managed to rebuild their marriage? Did time apart help you work out what you actually wanted?

And if you did leave, did life eventually become peaceful again?

OF COURSE YOU LEAVE THIS SELFISH MAN WHO MAKES YOU MISERABLE

PinkNailPolish2026 · 31/07/2026 19:41

He doesn’t get to buggar off to gigs, leave the house a mess and shirk his responsibilities at home. Have you said to him you’re thinking about separating and been frank about the situation at home? He sounds a lazy git and clearly isn’t pulling his weight, lay it on the line to him and don’t take his wishy washy replies about getting a hobby as an answer. He either gets his act together or lives his life without you.

CoffeeBooksRats · 31/07/2026 19:48

I think you need to be frank with him about how you are seriously considering ending the marriage and book yourself an amazing solo holiday somewhere to get some space and rest and downtime. He can crack on and deal with everything while you’re gone!!

LadyGardenersQuestionTime · 31/07/2026 19:59

Reading your post - this is no marriage. Time to go. You have a complete mismatch in what you think marriage is about, and I don't see any signs he loves you enough to worry about your happiness.

BTW those are classic DARVO tactics - telling you your burnout and unhappiness is because you don't have hobbies.

category12 · 31/07/2026 20:00

Crikey I hope you're never planning children together.

Take the holiday. Do it. Run away tonight.

And then divorce.

Then it’s already over.

This person doesn’t care about you op.

He's a selfish dick who will always be a selfish dick.

You deserve a safe, calm home.

I’d be inclined to think seriously about leaving the dogs with him too tbh.

The point of a partner is to bring joy to your life and to support one another. It doesn’t work if he’s sucking the life out of you and making things harder.

Love shmove. You should always love YOU more than any man. That way if and when they take the piss, you love you enough to leave.

This.

If you tell your partner that you are feeling unhappy, overwhelmed and exhausted and he doesn't respond by immediately thinking what can he do to help, I don't know where you go from there really. He isn't showing any care or love, is he?

Maybe you should book yourself a week away in a nice airbnb and just give yourself some time to think. Nice food, soak in a bubble bath, nice cold bottle of wine, good book, favourite music - looking after yourself and not worrying about anyone else for a change.

At this point, he is not bringing much to your life. Unless that changes, I think you will end up leaving. Better to be single and free than stuck in a relationship that's all about him.

Hamstersnorkel · 31/07/2026 20:09

Yes my husband was this selfish, funnily enough it was also with a band and gigs! If I asked him for help around the house or to spend time with me he really resented it and seemed to view it as me stopping him from doing what he enjoyed doing? I also used to fantasise about having my own home without him behaving like a lodger.

What it really boiled down to was that it was more important to him that his mates and strangers were impressed with him being in a band than what his wife thought of him. Eventually he had an affair (more validation from a stranger!) and we split. I was devastated about it at first but it really is easier and less lonely without him.

Prawnlover · 31/07/2026 20:23

What is making you feel so burn out? Your work? Because that’s not going to change because of him?

or is it housework and the dogs? No children, correct?

Prawnlover · 31/07/2026 20:24

You don’t mention even once having chatted to him about this

AttilaTheMeerkat · 31/07/2026 20:37

You have not read the fifth paragraph of ops initial post. She has spoken to him about this matter. He’s replied that the problem is she has no hobbies of her own!

OP - plan your exit and seek legal advice re divorce and all aspects of separation. Knowledge is power. Would you want to continue this joint business by buying him out or are you prepared to simply wind it up?. Is it actually making any money?.

my apologies

i am still baffled why the op is so exhausted and burned out. If it’s because of work… then that is what needs to be addressed in the first instance for a tangible improvement in quality of life

Changeaboutnow · 31/07/2026 20:46

Yes it's making money the business is a screen printing and graphic design business and we bring in about quarter of a million a year. I work my absolute ass off. But my husband just UPS and leaves which means that I lose money as I can't screen print and man my shop at the same time. Things are so sporadic that it's very difficult to get someone in to be this flexible to help and support me with the workload. I think I spend a lot of time isolated. Not being able to admit to my friends, I feel like my marriage is failing and how incredibly alone I feel.

Are you equal owners?

AttilaTheMeerkat · 31/07/2026 20:53

Could you buy out his share?. What does your accountant think re the feasibility of taking on another staff member?. Do you want to continue the business going forward?.

tiv2020 · 31/07/2026 20:54

In your position OP I woukd start planning.
You say it is your business you are running but it is a 2 persons operation - is he fully carrying his load in that respect? Can you manage without him in the event of a split?
The dogs - whose are they? Are they essential to you?

Bonkers1966 · 31/07/2026 21:00

Your marriage is certainly failing and his behaviour is directly affecting your bottom line. A catch he is not. Please take legal advice. I think the Airbnb idea is great. I wonder if he would notice if you moved out for 2 weeks. Jeez.

Your marriage is failing because your dh is all about himself.

Does his gigging bring in money to the household or is it his?

toottoot3 · 31/07/2026 21:33

If it's just his hobby, it's not to interfere with work. He probably gets great satisfaction from it and all that comes from it, but most of us would rather be doing our hobby than work. He has to grow up, or only do it in his own time off, after doing his housework share too. You both do the the same job, Same kids!
Have him told what your expectations are. Better yet , take up his insistence that you have hobbys. 3 nights a week set in stone, say your doing whatever you like, friends /pictures/swimming he's in house or sorting childcare and paying cleaner

Ladyoftheflowers1990 · 31/07/2026 21:44

I love our dogs so very much. They keep me in great company. I don't know what I'd do without them. Our business is an equal share even though I've been working on it for 6 years and he only came aboard full-time last year. But we both had the idea together in covid. When he gets paid for gigs he spends it on all guitar gear. He doesn't contribute anything to the household. No, we don't have any children, I've never really wanted them. I'm definitely a career career woman.

You've tried to tell him and he didn't listen so now you need to show him. Leave, he will either get it and shape up, thinks he gets it and things will change temporarily or he won't get it and the relationship is over. Whichever way it goes you shouldn't carry on like this, you get one life and it's too short to be with someone who is bringing you down and making your life harder
