Feeling lonely and resentful in marriage, am I expecting too much?

Hi everyone,
I'm posting anonymously because I'm feeling really lost and would appreciate some honest opinions, even if they're hard to hear.

I'm a 40-year-old woman and I've been married since 2022. On the surface, it probably looks like everything should be fine, but the truth is I'm feeling incredibly lonely in my marriage.

I hate admitting this, but I've started to resent my husband. I find him selfish, lazy and unreliable, and I'm struggling to see past it.

We're a blended family. I have one biological daughter, and he has several children from previous relationships. Both of his ex-partners have never worked and are unemployed, whereas I've always worked and have a full-time career in NHS education in a relatively senior role.

Despite that, I feel like the responsibility for our home falls almost entirely on me. We split everything financially 50/50, including contributing towards his children, but I still seem to carry the mental load and the physical load.
He leaves washing everywhere, never cleans, has never changed or washed a bed, and generally waits for me to do everything. By the time I get home from work, I feel exhausted and taken for granted.

There have also been trust issues. A while ago, I discovered he'd been exchanging suggestive memes with a much younger colleague. They both insisted it never went any further, and to his credit he changed jobs because we agreed it was the best way to try and rebuild our marriage. I've tried to move on from it, but I can't pretend it didn't damage my trust.

What makes things harder is that he leaves for work after I do and gets home before me, yet I still have to ask, or rather beg, for the bare minimum around the house. He doesn't make me feel special anymore. We don't go on dates, he doesn't surprise me or really think about me, yet he always seems willing to go the extra mile for other people.

Over the last six months our intimacy has almost disappeared. We barely have sex anymore, and I've tried talking to him about it. He insists nothing is wrong, says he loves me and tells me everything is fine, but his actions don't match his words. I can't shake the feeling that I'm being neglected and taken for granted.
My previous long-term relationship was full of infidelity and deceit, so I'm aware I carry some baggage from that.

I know it probably makes me more sensitive to changes, and I don't want to jump to conclusions, but deep down I feel like something isn't right.

I suppose what I'm really asking is this:
Am I expecting too much? Is this just what marriage becomes after a few years? Am I letting my past make me paranoid, or does this sound like someone who's checked out of the relationship?

Most importantly, how would you approach a conversation with him that isn't accusatory but gets across how serious this has become? I don't want another argument. I want to know if this marriage can be fixed, but I also don't want to spend years feeling lonely while living with someone.

Please be honest. I'm genuinely looking for perspective, whether you think I'm being unfair or whether you think my concerns are valid.

Thank you for reading.

How many kids has he got exactly OP? As a mum to 1 DC myself I wouldn't date a man with many kids!

I would be looking for some where else to live. He's obviously a rubbish dad too not saving for Xmas. Do not marry him. Leave him!!

Cheeseandolivesplease · 22/07/2026 23:49

@Mancity08 I totally agree with you - the OP should not go 50/50 on supporting his children. I have three children - all biologically mine - eldest two from first husband, youngest one with my now husband.
But interestingly, when I said on MN that the older two are not my DH's financial responsibility but that of myself and their bio father - by goodness was I shouted down and told part of the role of a "good" stepdad is to financially help to support all of the children.
Absolute rubbish!

So sorry. From experience I doubt he will change. So as you are still young my advice is to LTB and I never thought I'd write that to anybody. You can rebuild your life and be happy. I agree maybe not so easy with a chid but not hard with one child. If he does not treat you as a special and wonderful woman now after such a short time - he never will so don't put up with it and get out soonest: this summer is a good time: go!

Really sorry OP, I don't think you are expecting alot. You say he wouldn't buy his own kids Xmas presents? So you buy them as you are sorting it for your own child? Not sure if I read that right. He doesnt sound a very good Dad if that is the case. I am in marriage counselling and we have been advised to try start with 'I' statements so 'I feel taken for granted, disrespected etc...' it helps with not sounding accusatory and to express your needs. Would you both consider marriage counselling? I think it would be a test of his commitment to the marriage to see how he would respond to the suggestion. If he won't engage with you, if you try to get to the bottom of the issues nicely, it's difficult to know where to go from there. Though you might also feel like you'd done enough to make it work and time to walk away. We married in 2023. It's okay to walk away.

He’s definitely taking you for granted if you’re paying 50% of his costs towards kids he has from other relationships.

me and DH split the costs of our home 50/50, but any costs related to his kids with his ex wife are his costs, not my costs.
