Boyfriend doesn't want to get our children together

As the title says. He hasn't explicitly said that he doesn't want to, it's just that he doesn't ask to.

For context: been dating a few years, very very slow burn, didn't meet one another's children until after a year.

He's not great at the hands on dad thing. Previously when we have got together with them, my boyfriend has been more interested in his phone or his own needs.

One time we went to a leisure centre. Boyfriend spent 95% of the time alone in the adult spa area whilst I watched the kids.
I did bring this up afterwards and said it wasn't acceptable and was unfair.

Twice since then I asked to get together again with them and he totally ignored me. Just left the message on read and didn't respond.

I made it clear that I was again unhappy and wouldn't be asking again.

He doesn't ask. He doesn't seem to have any interest in integrating them. The kids do get on really well.

Think I am just struggling with WHY he doesn't want to get us all together?

I feel so lonely and bored of doing everything alone with my children. I genuinely thought when I met my boyfriend, that we would spend more time together as a big family, but instead I feel like he maybe just wanted a babysitter/nanny whilst he continued to do as he pleased.

It's really affecting my self-worth and making me doubt myself; I feel so hurt that he doesn't want to spend time with me/us.

But why would you want to date someone whose a crap dad? Doesnt that bother you?

But I've seen so little of him in Dad mode, that I don't even feel I can make that assessment.

The times I have seen him, he's been adequate.

But I'm also aware that some men can appear to be fantastic hands-on fathers, but it's all an act and they're still shit selfish partners... so I guess my opinion on that is still open.

And I'm aware a man can be a good father and then become a shit one, or not be great but learn to do better. Mums too!

His youngest has special needs, so despite their age they appear younger. Leaving them in a pool without an adult isn't an option and the fact he assumed I'd watch them whilst he relaxed was annoying - there was no conversation had about how he'd take 30 mins and then I could...he just disappeared into the spa and stayed there!!

And hands off is the correct term - I don't think I've ever see him be hands ON..!!

That level of entitlement would put many of us off on the spot OP. He might be using his reticence to try to get you to back down from asserrting you are not his childminder, trying to wear you down, but screw that eh?

Def sounds like he was looking for another mum for his children aka nanny with Fanny as mn likes to call her

he obv cba to look after his own kids and would prefer you/another woman to do it

Because he then gets held accountable for his slack parenting

Well, you did say the one time you tried it, he swanned off to the adults part and left you minding the kids.

If you had been happy with that , I’m sure he would have been prepared to continue. Instead, you very sensibly called him out.

surprise surprise he doesn’t want any repeat.

colour me surprised.

He doesn’t sound like a keeper.

Exactly

All good points!
I guess im wondering why you'd want to date a man whose so uninterested in his children, or uninterested in appearing like a good parent to a new partner he's trying to impress. Like he doesnt value fatherhood in any way and is so disconnected he doesnt even realise that looking like a crap dad to a partner would be a turn off? I guess I just dont understand why you'd even give someone like that a chance, its like him not having basic hygiene or not being able to pay his own bills, im just not sure why you'd even be interested in him after seeing it, isnt it a massive turn off?

Maybe his kids don't want to play happy families with your kids? As a divorced parent with kids I have zero interest in forcing my kids in with my partner's kids. They have nothing in common and he's my bf, not interviewing for daddy part 2.

how about when he left you minding all the kids and swanned off to the adults section without even discussing anything with you.

was that “adequate”.

Well no, hence I spoke to him about it.

But I also didn't think it was crime of the century enough to end a relationship over. However..over time, stuff is tallying up and if it tips in favour of me not feeling like I'm satisfied with how things are and conversations aren't changing things, then thats where things will change (as in, I'd end it)

Child comes first.

Not a man.

Sounds like you're nice, your kids are nice, his kids are nice and he's the weak link in the 'family'.

I wonder if this was why his marriage broke down? Because the kids and their mum were a unit and he was circling on the outside and couldn't be bothered getting stuck in.

How often does he have his kids normally?

Tuesdayschild50 · Yesterday 20:42

Id dump him sounds immature and head constantly in his phone... no way would I put up with that your letting him do this to you.
