How to mention birthday contribution to DIL without sounding reproachful

WWYD? It was a big birthday for our DIL a few weeks ago. She is a delightful young woman and we get on well. We asked our DS what she'd like for a birthday present, and he suggested a contribution to the activities he'd arranged for the day (all interesting ones), so we happily transferred £100. We've also got her a smaller present, which we'll hand over tomorrow when we'll see them both, as just sending money seems a bit impersonal. The dilemma is this: we heard nothing after sending the money (to our son) and I think it's possible that he just didn't think to tell her that we'd paid for part of the day. I don't want or need thanks, but I would hate to think that our DIL would imagine that we just hadn't bothered about her big birthday. I don't want to say anything to her that could be understood as a reproach, but I really want her to know that we did send her a present! I'm thinking of handing over the small gift and saying something like 'Obviously, the actual present was the contribution to your day, but this is just something to keep'. Or some such thing. What would you do?

When you give her the present say “I know the windsurfing was your main present from
us but it doesn’t feel right to not give you something to open”.

Gosh, you’re being a bit awful. Your poor DIL. It’s not even her birthday yet. She hasn’t even done the activity. It’s quite possibly a surprise and you’re getting all worked up about how rude she’s been to not yet say thank you. No one has even given or possibly told her about the gift yet. 😂

Confirm with your son that he will tell her it’s a gift from all of you. Let her enjoy the day. Give her your own little gift. Then when it’s time to say goodbye, I’m sure she’ll give you a hug and say thank you for the lovely day. Let the poor girl have her birthday first before expecting applause.

Surely if she knew you’d contributed she would have phoned / messaged immediately to thank you?

Presumably you transferred the money to your son’s account. Is he deliberately keeping quiet about that?

And of course you want and need to be thanked! That’s how human beings co-exist.

Breezy comment, here's your second present! Did you enjoy the activity?

☝🏾. This opens the door...

If you're questioning whether or not your son told your DIL, I wouldn't bother asking him as he'll probably just say yes regardless. I would say something along the lines of what you've already said, or perhaps 'this is just a little pressie as obviously we contributed towards the cost of your special day'.

ElectricFairyNow · 07/06/2026 21:06

All good. Saw them today and DIL did know about the payment, and thanked us. So I needn't have worried about her thinking we'd not bothered. We had a good day.

Perfect outcome

Ask your son

Editing because the resolution happened. Next time just ask your son though!

Tocsin · 07/06/2026 22:23

I wouldn’t say it’s a perfect outcome. Very poor manners not to do so much as send a quick text at once thanking OP for the money.

Really…. I’d much rather say thank you in person than text everyone a thank you.

Tocsin · 08/06/2026 21:13

Text at once. Follow with more fulsome thanks in person. You certainly don’t leave the giver anxiously wondering whether the gift has been received and understood.

nc43214321 · 08/06/2026 22:10

No that’s crazy, I would never expect anyone to
do that. All sounds very transactional.

Maybe she will thank you face to face tomorrow

This!

She sounds lovely. Glad it’s sorted xx
