New Love Interest Weighs Himself Daily

Do you think it says something about a man's character that the first thing he does in the morning every day is weigh himself? He has a healthy BMI and is active. I don't know anyone else who does this.
Thank you!

Tbf a lot of personal trainers tell you to weigh yourself daily. My scales are in my bathroom and I usually weigh myself everyday.

CuriousKiteFlyer · 24/05/2025 07:10

Ok thanks that's good to know, why do the trainers advise this?

I’d see it as an indication that he is keen to stay fit and healthy, which is a good thing.

Gettingbysomehow · 24/05/2025 07:13

My mother has always done this. It's the only way she can control her weight. If she weighs her usual she eats normally. If she's put on a few pounds she cuts back for a few days. I think k this is a pretty good way of keeping weight down but not that reliable as fluid can go up and down.

BCBird · 24/05/2025 07:14

It would concern me that he might have underlying issues with food or body image

PorgyandBess · 24/05/2025 07:15

My husband and I weigh ourselves every morning and our stats are updated on the ‘Fitdays’ apps on our phone. Which we often compare 😆🤓

I see it as a really good thing.

I’ve not had a trainer myself but I do know your weight fluctuates by a reasonable amount, over a day you can see differences, over a week you will see differences so the best way to keep an eye on your weight is to weigh daily to ascertain an average.

Unless it comes with signs of health anxiety he’s just looking after himself.

Hoplolly · 24/05/2025 07:17

It's the first thing I do every day, so what of it?

Keeps me on track. Take your eye off the ball and it's very easy to gain a lot of weight very quickly.

TwitchyNibbles · 24/05/2025 07:18

I did a trial of Noom a couple of years ago and they recommend it too. I actually found it really useful as you pretty quickly get used to the daily fluctuations, a downward trend keeps you motivated and an upward trend pretty quickly lets you know you need to rein things in a bit. It's a good way to stay accountable and not let things slide. It wouldn't worry me unless he was demonstrating unhealthy behaviours around food/exercise, or starts trying to push it onto you.

EilishMcCandlish · 24/05/2025 07:19

So do I. Ok, maybe not 100% of days, as I don't take scales away with me. But most days.

JustGoClickLikeALightSwitch · 24/05/2025 07:19

Another one here weighing herself daily - like a PP's mum, I find it easier to stay on track and maintain a healthy weight this way.

I guess what matters is how it affects him - if he gains/loses 500g is he morose/starving himself/leaping with joy/stuffing eclairs into his mouth?

Crickacrack · 24/05/2025 07:19

I think it’s helpful for some so you can see all your regular weight fluctuations. It’s particularly relevant to women whose weight may fluctuate due to hormones. Eg, I’ll be a KG heavier while on my period. It helps some people be more neutral and less shocked about the figure on the scale and gives you a better idea of your overall weight trend .

But it’s not for everyone. They don’t recommend it for those who have had certain eating disorders.

I know when I do it, it’s because I’m keeping an eye on my weight. I put on almost a stone in one month putting me at my record highest of 83Kg when I stopped weighing myself a few years ago. It was like I was unaware I was getting bigger and bigger. I actually thought I’d lost weight lol I got such a shock. So ever since then I weigh most days!

Once I get back to my normal weight of 58kg (nearly there) I’ll probably weigh myself far less regularly eventually but initially will
still monitor it to make sure I’m maintaining and not gaining. It takes so long to lose weight for some of us but not a long time at all to gain weight!

Well scientifically, it's far better than the common 'weigh yourself once a week' because that tells you your weight within a few pounds and could mask variations for all sorts of reasons that have nothing to do with how much body fat you have, which is what needs to be monitored for health/appearance.

If you weigh yourself daily, you will become aware of fluctuations and know that it's not possible to gain 3 pounds of fat in one day no matter how much you've stuffed yourself, but if you weigh yourself weekly, you don't know whether that 3 pound gain, which is entirely possible after a week of overeating, is extra fat, or just a fluctuation in hydration/what's going through your system.

WayneEyre · 24/05/2025 07:21

It's fine.helps you keep an eye on fluctuations and make any small changes if you're creeping up.

Did he mention it in passing or was it a big deal?

Rainingthankgoodness · 24/05/2025 07:22

Taking reasonable measures to eat healthily and exercise are a good thing. But so many people are absolutely obsessed with diet and exercise and it's just really boring.
I would worry that he is a diet/ exercise junky.

Bernadinetta · 24/05/2025 07:22

Isn’t this normal?

arcticpandas · 24/05/2025 07:23

My DH does this. It's just a habit of his, like go on the scales before he takes his shower. And he doesn't even work out, just walks. I think he just wants to make sure he's not weighing too much (he's not fit but not overweight either but close to it).

smallsilvercloud · 24/05/2025 07:23

It does seems a bit obsessive but perhaps he’s been overweight before and this routine helps him. I wouldn’t worry it’s a negative character trait unless he starts trying to control your weight in any way.

WayneEyre · 24/05/2025 07:23

I mean yes, doesn't matter if it's every day or week really but the habit is the thing.

Rainingthankgoodness · 24/05/2025 07:24

Bernadinetta · 24/05/2025 07:22

No! Only for certain people!

Rtato · 24/05/2025 07:26

I do this too. I didn’t know it was a red flag, better tell my husband!

verycloakanddaggers · 24/05/2025 07:26

Rainingthankgoodness · 24/05/2025 07:24

No! Only for certain people!

It's in the range of normal, there's no one fixed normal for everyone.

Plenty of people do weigh every day, and then give it no more thought.

Bernadinetta · 24/05/2025 07:27

Rainingthankgoodness · 24/05/2025 07:24

What “certain people”? It certainly seems like plenty of people on this thread find it normal? So would you say it’s abnormal?

Crickacrack · 24/05/2025 07:28

You probably do know other people who weigh daily, but they just hadn’t mentioned it to you.

Only one or two of my friends know I do this and that’s because they’re my “diet/fitness” accountability partners and we share progress updates.
