Do you think it says something about a man's character that the first thing he does in the morning every day is weigh himself? He has a healthy BMI and is active. I don't know anyone else who does this.
Thank you!

I weigh myself every day
i see it recommended a lot
I can fluctuate by 5lbs a week based on my cycle, bowel movements hydration etc
so it just helps you average out and see trends

PerkyGreenCat · 24/05/2025 07:31

An awful lot of people are overweight now. We need to do whatever we can to stay a healthy weight.

I weigh myself everyday. It's no big deal, no obsession. I do it as soon as I get up.

Clothes are quite stretchy now so it would be easy for me to put on maybe a stone or possibly more without noticing. Then I'd have to diet for months and I really can't be arsed doing that. I like eating chips and drinking beer! I'd rather know I've put on a pound over the last 7 days so I can just cut down on what I eat for a few days.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 24/05/2025 07:32

I don't, but whenever I have a bath, I fill it to the brim and carefully get in, and then out again and measure the amount of water I have displaced - rather like an Ureka Can - and then I calculate my volume.

(I don't do this every day.)

Chazbots · 24/05/2025 07:33

People who weigh daily tend to be better at weight control (large studies) but as in everything in life, it depends...

I liked weighing daily as I had an app with smoothing, so was good for trends and the more data the better. I don't do it all the time and when I do, it's just a number for information.

If I had an ED, no, not good for you as you measure your success or worth by the number and use it as ammunition, not information.

What “certain people”? It certainly seems like plenty of people on this thread find it normal? So would you say it’s abnormal?

It is normal for some people. It's not normal for others.

I would suggest that the opinions on this thread are biased because the title will have attracted posters who are similarly invested in weight and fitness issues.

If that's what people are in to then fair enough. But as people are individuals of course some people would view it as obsessive.

TattooedDad · 24/05/2025 07:34

It could be an insecurity thing. I used to be very overweight when i was younger and when i lost the weight i was so insecure about putting it back on that i weighed myself every day.

Easipeelerie · 24/05/2025 07:36

It may be as simple as a way to track his weight or it might be a bit more obsessive. If he’s obsessive, you’ll probably notice it in other areas of his life.

Tbf a lot of personal trainers tell you to weigh yourself daily. My scales are in my bathroom and I usually weigh myself everyday.

they usually advise once a week one due to normal daily fluctuations in weight.

i think it’s a bit excessive and unnecessary for anyone and in a man would give me the ick.

PerkyGreenCat · 24/05/2025 07:37

P.s. when I say it helps me to notice I've put on a pound, I'm not including the 5 pounds I put on everytime I get my period! But from weighing myself daily, I know this happens every month, it's just water weight, and my weight goes back to normal around day 4-6 of my period.

Tulipsontoast · 24/05/2025 07:41

I do this, I use happy scale. Lots of things make a difference and it helps to see that fluctuations are normal.

CautiousLurker01 · 24/05/2025 07:51

I lost 6.5 stone a few years ago. I weigh pretty much every day as it’s the way I keep track. As another PP says, if I have gained, I cut back for a few days until I am back in the zone I need to be. I suspect he does the same thing. By the time your clothes are getting tight, you are looking at being 15lbs or more overweight and it’s a bigger task to slim down. Daily weighing is the best method, so long as you don’t have an underlying eating disorder, of course. But that’s a different issue and so long as he is eating 3 meals and not disappearing to the bathroom after any of them, there’s no reason to assume this. Perhaps he was a porky teen, or obesity/diabetes/heart disease runs in his family and this is his way of maintaining healthy habits?

Also, why would weighing daily be something that a man can’t do? Are men not allowed to be concerned about their health? Seems a bit sexist that you think a man is someone less of one because he jumps on the scales after brushing his teeth. I’d personally be more concerned if he didn’t flush the loo or shower…

My mother has always done this. It's the only way she can control her weight. If she weighs her usual she eats normally. If she's put on a few pounds she cuts back for a few days. I think k this is a pretty good way of keeping weight down but not that reliable as fluid can go up and down.

I'm 60 and I do this too. My husband is 63 and weighs himself every morning. He loves food and he likes to have a beer with his evening meal. He is tall and slim and works very hard to stay that way( rowing machine, lifts weights etc). My mother doesn't weigh herself every day but, if her clothes start feeling tight, she cuts down on what she's eating for a few days . Nothing wrong with watching your weight.

Exactly. I'm years past periods now but I do the same with holidays and Christmas eating. If I put on a pound or 2 I'll cut things out until they've gone. If I didn't monitor it it would just stay and then next holiday I'd add another pound or 2 . Not weird or obsessive just sensible.

FortyElephants · 24/05/2025 07:59

It says he cares about his weight and probably doesn't want to gain or lose weight. What else would it say about his character?

CharlotteLightandDark · 24/05/2025 07:36

I'd advise you to get a coffee and sit in a cafe window and do some people watching.Youll see a lot of people of either sex who haven't weighed themselves for 20 years. I'd far rather date someone who weighed themselves every day and kept the flab off. The giant 'pregnant man' I'd far more of an ick .

Cucy · 24/05/2025 08:04

Lots of people I know weigh themselves everyday.

Apparently you should do it once a week because your body fluctuates so much depending on what foods and drink you’ve had the day before etc but if he chooses to do it every day then that’s fine.

I think it’s how you know that may be in the issue.

If he said it in general conversation, then it’s fine.
If you can’t go away for a couple nights without him stressing about weighing himself, then it’s not fine.

handsdownthebest · 24/05/2025 08:05

CuriousKiteFlyer · 24/05/2025 07:10

Ok thanks that's good to know, why do the trainers advise this?

I do too and so does my husband. We just want to stay within a certain weight and if it fluctuates a little too much which can do after a bit of over indulgence, we just rein it in a bit.
We both love our food and drink and we’re also getting older so it keeps tabs on our weight. However, it mustn’t be an obsession.
For me he’s a keeper 😁

purplecheesecake · 24/05/2025 08:09

I wouldnt find this weird at all, as I have weighed myself daily for years! Maybe with a few breaks e.g. during and after pregnancy or when on holiday, but otherwise I always do it.

I’ve always been a healthy weight and think I have a pretty good relationship with my body, I will cut calories for a bit if I notice I’m putting on weight but nothing drastic, I just cut out desserts and snacks for a while.

Mathsbabe · 24/05/2025 08:11

I do, I put 200gm on yesterday so I will cut down today.

GLC789 · 24/05/2025 08:15

I weigh daily and do my weekly average. Also a healthy BMI here. Keeps me accountability on my maintenance journey after losing weight 5 year ago. I don't actually care what the scales say, it doesn't upset me if it goes up a few lbs or down a few lbs. I just like to know.

Just a habit that stuck when I took my health into my own hands back then, along with many others habits.

If I'm not at home, and there are no scales, it doesn't ruin my week of anything.

Hope that gives a little bit of insight x

towhoknowswhere · 24/05/2025 08:19

I don’t count calories or diet as such but I weigh myself most days.
I eat well but do like a snack and daily weighing as helped me maintain my weight for decades.
I just cut back a little if it creeps up but generally my weight stays the same.

Stinksmum · 24/05/2025 08:33

I weigh myself every day. To keep on track with.....my weight. Thank goodness I read this thread and discovered I'm a bit obsessive, and I probably have a problem. Honestly. 🙄

ItGhoul · 24/05/2025 08:39

Assuming he eats normally and isn’t obsessive about it, I don’t think it says anything about his character at all.

Most of the ones I’ve come across advise daily, for the reasons many of us have outlined on this thread.

That works for me and many others but it’s fine if someone wants to weigh less frequently as well.

It’s definitely not advisable for everyone.

Whatever works for each persons fitness/weight journey.

blubbyblub · 24/05/2025 08:48

BCBird · 24/05/2025 07:14

It would concern me that he might have underlying issues with food or body image

We all have ways of maintaining our health and weight. I don’t weigh often as it triggers me. My dh weighs daily as it means he knows when he needs to cut back.

most people need to have methods to manage their weight as they age. Either don’t and probably slowly increase in weight or find simple solutions that work for you.
