Husband saying I don't make an effort with my appearance

I've been with my husband for 8 years and married for 6 months. My husband says to me he hates my hair up and says he doesn't like some of my clothes. I tried to see his point of view and I don't really wear my hair up and bought my glam clothes.
Today I had my hair up and went to the gym. When I came back, my husband said stop wearing your hair like that and you don't make any effort anymore now you're married.
This hurt. I honestly don't think it's true. I get compliments from my friends and family on my hair, lipstick etc.
What do I do? I would never say something like this to someone

It is certainly not how people treat each other in a healthy relationship.

Raininginparadise2 · 22/01/2025 16:41

Thin end of an abusive wedge this OP. Stand your ground and dress however you like. Be very mindful to watch out for more red flags. Sounds like it's in his personality to be a controlling arse.

This is how I started to lose attraction for my ex husband as soon as we were married I just started to feel the ick the little bit of hair that stuck up at the side in the morning really really irrationally bugged me and I disliked him in some of his clothes because they brought out the ick more.
It wasn't his fault, he was just being himself as he'd always been but it was just the beginning of the end for me.
I just had the sudden onset of ick and nothing could change that.
Sorry op but I think he's just lost the attraction and that's nothing you've done or maybe he's attracted to someone else and comparing.

Yes, possibly.
In both cases, he can fuck off.

Ah, one of those men that turns nasty once they think they've got you.

Eight years though - there must have been some behaviour red flags before this?
Tell him it'll be an extremely short marriage if he continues to behave like an arsehole.

I agree with everyone who has said this is a massive red flag, and you need to consider the future of the relationship.

Don't be suckered into staying by the sunk costs fallacy (invested eitht years, spent ££ on the wedding, how will I start again) or fear of "what will everyone think?" Tell your friends and family his mask slipped and you can never unhear what you heard.

THIS. The sunk cost fallacy and a sense of being trapped has women 25 years in feeling hatred toward their horrible partner and regret as to why they didn't end the ill treatment when it started.
Two little words - 'I'm leaving' or four: 'This relationship is over' seem so difficult but once said, will set you free. He's choosing to be mean instead of loving toward you.

Jingleballs2 · 22/01/2025 17:16

Has he always been rude to you?

Christ my hair is always up, does he realise how hard it is to do anything with hair flapping in your face 🙄

SwordToFlamethrower · 22/01/2025 17:20

When he grows his hair long, styles it daily, gets a mani pedi done every week, buys and wear £££ of make up, wears skimpy outfits every day and has the body of The Rock, he can have an opinion on your appearance.

Till then, he can go and fuck himself

astl · 22/01/2025 17:26

I hope you're not planning kids with this dickhead?

If he thinks you've let yourself go after marriage cos you wear your hair up to go the gym, just wait til the newborn & toddler age (if that's in your plans). He's in for a shock!!!!

Easipeelerie · 22/01/2025 17:27

If he’s trying to exert control in this way, then he will be doing it in other ways too.
He is telling you through his behaviours and words, that he believes you should do as you’re told. He doesn’t sound like a good person.

sjs42 · 22/01/2025 18:30

What an insufferable prick. Do you want to spend the rest of your life with someone who thinks you are a doll or trophy wife?

Motnight · 22/01/2025 19:11

Do not have children with this man. He will hate your body.

BlondeMamaToBe · 22/01/2025 19:13

There’s often women thinking similar about their partners and they get told to say something or leave so surely it’s OK for a man fo highlight it.
