It's a WhatsApp and Partner one....

Casually glanced at partner's phone when he was on WhatsApp. At the top of the chats was an 'archived' folder, it wasn't there the last time we were looking at a family chat message on his phone. So it's recently appeared.

I've figured out an Archived folder stays at the top of chats if you still receive messages from whoever you archived.

Hmmm has made my spidey senses tingle a bit.

Can anyone shed any light if this seems suspicious? Or am I being daft? Thanks!

I originally thought along those lines but why would anyone archive a normal chat? I don't understand it's purpose....

I archive all my chats apart from the ones I'm really interested in an want to read straight away. Work stuff and everything else gets archived and then I reply when I'm sitting down and want to reply to it all. Don't get hundreds of notifications about a load of crap that way.
Might not be anything sinister going in at all!

Flowersandbubblegum · 18/06/2024 09:25

There's also locked chats, if you pull the screen down. Those I'd worry about. Archive doesn't really mean much. Like other posters, I archive conversations and mute them when they're quite active.

NothingVenturedAndAllThat · 18/06/2024 09:35

Just some thoughts...

I used to be very much convinced that you shouldn't look, shouldn't be a 'crazy bunny boiler', and all that. And then I saw loads of videos made by therapists on social media who talk about it being a red flag if you can't share phones. If you don't know each other's passwords. If you can't say to your partner 'Hey, I'm having a silly wobble, can you show me so I can put it to bed?'

And actually it was ME telling my partner to respect my privacy and stop being daft 😬 So, reflecting on the new info, I will let him look if he's having a moment. They don't happen often and almost exclusively happen when his confidence is at rock bottom. I don't see it as a lack of trust as much as an abundance of insecurity. And I don't want him to feel insecure, so why wouldn't I just let him look? It's not like there's anything to find 🤷🏼‍♀️ yeah maybe chats are private in a broader context but when I really thought about it, there actually probably shouldn't be anything I can't tell my spouse, and if there is, that's a problem. I SHOULD be able to tell him everything. I'd be worried about the relationship if I couldn't!

So maybe approach blokey and tell him how you're feeling. Surely he won't want you panicking over nothing? A romantic relationship is such a weird thing. We have a poo in front of each other but fret about phone privacy? Weird 🤣

I archive very busy big chats for work or charities. Things that it feels pointed to leave but which I don't keep up with now.

Poddledoddle · 18/06/2024 12:11

Roaringlions · 13/06/2024 15:16

I've got all my work WhatsApp groups archived.
I don't have to leave them but I don't get all the notifications so it's just easier.

Tbh, with the options for secret and disappearing messages on WhatsApp I don't think archiving would be the way of hiding something of someone wanted to.

But they'd have to know about that.

Sjh15 · 18/06/2024 12:19

I’ve just noticed my archived folder and it’s full of loads of old conversations! Nothing dodgy, I think you’re worrying over nothing ☺️

CosyLemur · 18/06/2024 12:22

Archived chats stay at the top. I archive chats all the time.

Why is an archive file making you suspicious?

Underestimated4 · 18/06/2024 12:25

I archive ones which are group chats such as work/school/old get together arranged. Or people I don’t speak to very often. No reason other than I don’t have a long list of chats to scroll through when trying to find one of my faves to text.

Plzwhothis · 18/06/2024 12:35

I never cheated on you I love you I never do that who is this because it pop up on my phone and I never add it . Not coping with this at all . 😭

TakeMeDancing · 18/06/2024 12:43

My Archived folder contains the boring neighbourhood chat—a bunch of busybodies talking about which bins are going out this week, etc.

Justus6 · 18/06/2024 12:43

It's likely nothing I've archived chats they sit at the top. It's likely a redundant chat that has some things they don't want to loose.. important pics or docs etc

I like your optimistic approach! My birthday isn't until next year, he has said he wants to marry me but we aren't at a stage of him proposing any time soon, as we have life logistics to sort. So I can't imagine it's a chat that's to do with a surprise for me...

I think your being a bit overdramatic tbh. Archived chats used to be at the bottom of WhatsApp, it changed after an update a while ago.

I archive rather than delete chats in case I need to access or check something.

motherofbees · 18/06/2024 12:48

Ive accidentally archived chats somehow so could just be an accident

ahoyhoyhoy · 18/06/2024 12:52

I’ve only got 3/4 chats that aren’t archived. If we don’t message at least weekly, into archive they go. The archived chat folder stays at the top no matter how recently a chat in there was active.

millym102 · 18/06/2024 13:54

I archive all annoying and boring chats like class groups, cubs groups, PTA etc and certainly wouldn't do it with something secret as it's no less accessible than any other. Not that I have any secrets, mind.

I really wouldn't worry except why are you worried? That might need thinking about.

MystyLuna · 18/06/2024 15:20

I archive all chats apart from chat between me and my husband.
All you have to do is click on the archive button and you can view all the messages.
It isn't like they are completely hidden.
When someone who has been archived sends me a message it just comes through as normal.
Then after replying they get archived again.
My husband is the only person I message regularly and I don't want to risk sending a message meant for my husband to someone else.
That's why all other chats are archived until I need them.

Codlingmoths · 18/06/2024 15:23

Mines at the top, the last chat i archived was at least months ago so it’s a good 5000 messages ago. It just sits at the top, presumably ever since I first archived a chat.

I also archive about half of all my chats. They’re the ones I want to dip into occasionally but don’t want to see every time I open WhatsApp. It helps me to keep my WhatsApp clean. Not sure of my logic but I’m sure other people do that too and that’s why WhatsApp created the feature following customer research. I wouldn’t worry x

mummahbythesea · 18/06/2024 19:36

Talk to him? “X, I saw something over your shoulder on WhatsApp that’s making me overthink…” If he has nothing to hide, he’ll instantly tell you there’s nothing to worry about and show you his WhatsApp.
You can’t hide that you saw it, you didn’t go snooping but you have to communicate otherwise it’ll eat you alive.
We’ve all been there. That’s how I found out my ex-boyfriend was cheating but my husband of 11 years would do anything to settle my anxiety. Good Luck!

MissJoGrant · 18/06/2024 19:48

It could well be nothing. I have an archived chat. I'm in a group with some friends and a few of them are going on holiday together. Most of their recent messages have been details about the holiday (timings, dates etc) so I've archived it for now.

NewName24 · 18/06/2024 19:50

We have a poo in front of each other

Speak for yourself Hmm

Bluebellsparklypant · 18/06/2024 22:55

i’ve archived messages by accident before, this could be really innocent but the only way you’l know is by asking (looking)
