What do you do when you get a call from a private call

I tend to ignore it

I answer in case it is something I need to know (medical, kids, other appointments). I’d just say ‘no thanks’ and hang up if cold caller.

TuesdayWhistler · 29/05/2024 20:35

The only logical answer is to ignore it, then put your phone in a microwave for 5 minutes on high, burn the microwave after it's gone bing, take the ashes to the garden and bury them for 5 years, dig them up and burn them again and then douse it all in bleach before throwing them from a bridge into the River Humber.

Just to be sure.

We answer it as many are from GP's and at times hospitals - the scam callers often have local numbers or numbers from the UK when in fact they are calling from another nation

RobinHood19 · 29/05/2024 20:38

I’m freelance and would be out of a job soon if I didn’t answer unknown numbers (that includes “hidden” numbers, yes). 99% of the time it’s someone who got my number from a seventh third party recommendation so it’s not like I’m expecting their call.

The other few cases that are genuine cold calls, I just hung up.

I also always answer my doorbell. I’m still alive.

category12 · 29/05/2024 20:40

I answer my door. I just hate phone calls.

Why pollute the Humber?

Why pollute the Humber?

Good point... Instead of bleach, use Grimsby Tap water.. just as deadly.. Ha!

(I joke I joke.. I actually.like Grimsby..🤪)

Sounds like medical people ok but what if you have not asked them to call

What do you mean not asked them to call?
I put my number as a contact number so if there is an issue people contact me.
And yes, 95% it’s NHS or educational place.

trampoline123 · 29/05/2024 20:54

I hate answering calls from number so don't know but answer private one sad it's usually the hospital.

Thepossibility · 29/05/2024 20:56

I answer. It could be a million things to do with the kids, work, house, extended family. It takes a second to hang up if it's a time waster.

category12 · 29/05/2024 20:31

It's not my experience that cold callers leave voice mails. They hang up.

I'm talking about the risk you take in not answering a call that you later discover was important.

Answering what turns out to be a sales can is a gamble that's worth the five seconds to me. Because if I don't take this stress free five seconds, I could end up with hours of stress trying to get through to the person who left a message that I need to respond to.

Jeezitneverends · 29/05/2024 12:02

How did all the private number ignorers cope in the days of landlines with no caller ID?🤣

We answered it obviously, now we don’t have to…they can leave a message if it’s important.

I think that's what children were for , the same as waiting at the TV while your parent decides what they want to watch . Anyone remember having to having to that shit job ?

BananaLambo · 30/05/2024 08:50

I answer it. If it’s a scammer and I have a few spare moments I’ll wind them up. One time I had one of those injury clams people on. I told them that I did actually have an accident at work and had to have my legs amputated after falling off a 20 foot ladder. I was able to drag this out for quite a while before dropping in that I’d stuck a bottle of vodka beforehand (none of this is true). He hung up on me. The scammer hung up on me.

sunshineandshowers40 · 30/05/2024 09:00

Usually school. I answer and end the call, if it is spam I end the call.

blackpooolrock · 30/05/2024 09:16

I always answer the phone, why wouldn't you?

JimPansy · 30/05/2024 10:02

Because it's usually a nuisance call or someone chatty wanting a chat and I'm busy. It might not be convenient to answer.

Cos I hate phone calls.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 30/05/2024 10:17

I just answer the phone. If it's a sales call I say no thanks and ask them to delete my number from their database. Simple. Takes 2 seconds.

I also answer the door so I realise this makes me totally weird.

Because I don’t want to - it’s that simple.

Growlybear83 · 30/05/2024 10:32

Why would you not answer your phone, unless you're expecting problems from someone or you're in a meeting etc? I don't have caller display on my landline anyway, which is the number I use for work, and I've only ever given my mobile number to a handful of people. I don't really see the point in having a phone if you're not going to answer it.

For its computer-in-my-pocket qualities.

I prefer to talk face to face or message.

I answer my phone to people I know. My circle tend to communicate via WhatsApp most of the time and say ‘you free for a chat’

Other than my mum no one really calls out of the blue, either on the phone or on person.

Growlybear83 · 30/05/2024 11:12

@category12 I was thinking more of landline phones than mobiles. I've only ever given my mobile number to a handful of very close friends/ relatives and don't use it for work. I've got a couple of friends who I message regularly but generally I speak to friends on the phone, rather than messaging.

Oh, I don't even have a landline any more.

It became pointless to me once my phone company changed things so it had to be connected through the router. The only reason I kept it was for in emergencies (in the event of power cuts etc) and if it had to go through the router that removed that usefulness.
