I tend to ignore it

Answer it. It's saved my life twice. Both times my routine blood tests were so out of range, they thought the results were spurious but called to go straight in to be re-checked. I needed multiple blood transfusions and didn't leave for a week each time. My Hb was at 30 (or 3, depending on which scale you use).

Bellevilles · 29/05/2024 12:18

My kids’ school always shows as number withheld so I always answer.

DisgruntledPelican · 29/05/2024 12:19

I just answer it. Hang up and block if it’s spam. Why not answer?

catlady7 · 29/05/2024 12:20

I answer as its medical

BobnLen · 29/05/2024 12:23

I guess you would know if you were expecting a medical call, it wouldn't come out of the blue.

Hoolihan · 29/05/2024 12:23

I hardly ever answer the phone really, even if it's someone I know! I hate talking on the phone. I never ever pick up unknown numbers.

Muddle200 · 29/05/2024 12:04

Sounds like medical people ok but what if you have not asked them to call

If it’s someone you don’t want to speak with then you can just hang up

My landline goes straight to voicemail, there weren't so many scammers in the old days, all calls on my landline have been scammers recently

Got rid of ours years ago for this reason.

Private calls are usually one of doctor/psychologist/psychiatrist
so I answer. Scam caller's usually come up with a number probably to stop people who block private numbers.

ManchesterLu · 29/05/2024 12:30

I answer it, and if it's telesales or a scam I sing to them until they hang up. Or put the phone to one side and practice my musical instrument.

30??? We're you upright? That's so low. Hope you're better now.

Thingsthatgo · 29/05/2024 12:33

I answer it, but I rarely get spam calls - maybe 2 or 3 a year.

Sue152 · 29/05/2024 12:35

I had one yesterday evening, ignored it and it rang off after 6 rings so was spam.

Love51 · 29/05/2024 12:35

My work number comes up Private Number. My favourite calls are when they answer "make me a winner" and I have to apologise for not being a radio station. I get the giggles every time which is a nice way to start a working relationship with a stranger. I suspect lots ignore and wait for me to text but I've no way of knowing if they were busy or just didn't fancy speaking to me. It doesn't matter to me, I'll speak to them eventually if they want me to!

ShinyPrettyThings87 · 29/05/2024 12:35

If it's important, they'll leave a message. I answered one one time and they asked if my name was 'Shiny', I said yes then they hung up. Apparently, after some Googling, they do it to see if your number is active to pass on to others.

DelurkingAJ · 29/05/2024 12:36

I answer. I’m more than capable of hanging up within a minute if I don’t want to talk. And sometimes it’s important (the garage, the school, the GP).

EBearhug · 29/05/2024 12:47

I answer - it's usually medical. (Some are good - "Can you come in tomorrow? We've had a cancellation." ) Also I have been job hunting and I have no idea what numbers recruiters will show or not. Spam calls almost always have a number.

nozbottheblue · 29/05/2024 12:53

theteddybear · 29/05/2024 12:06

I ignore every time unless I'm expecting a call from someone. If it's important they always leave a message the easiest way to weed out the spam/scam calls!

No, GP surgery, physio and hospital calls do not leave a message, for privacy reasons- they don’t know who might pick up the message. Makes it difficult as I can’t take calls at work, I just get notification that an unidentified number has tried to call me (several times!) but I don’t know who they are or how to get back to them.

ShortColdandGrey · 29/05/2024 12:53

I answer it as my daughters school comes through as a private number. I have no idea why as we all know the school office number 😂

Plantmother71 · 29/05/2024 12:59

If it’s a mobile number not stored in phone I tend to let it go to vm as I’ve found a lot are scam calls or offering new glazing when all of mine were done recently and when I tell them that they’re very rude or just drop the call. If it’s someone I know their name pops up.

SpringerFall · 29/05/2024 13:00

There is a million and one reasons, you seem to be drop fishing, why?

saraclara · 29/05/2024 13:08

I answer it and if it's a random sales pitch or something I just hang up straight away. It's quicker than waiting to see if there's a message. My phone is pretty good at warning me when the withheld number is a scam.

The times I've ignored them it's turned out to be something important (medical/solicitor etc) and it's taken forever to get hold of them when I've tried to ring back. Just not worth the anxiety, so I pick up and hang up without speaking, when needed.

I have adult kids and grandkids, and until recently, aged relatives. One of the calls I ignored was to tell me that my mum had been rushed into hospital. It took half an hour of calling back and being passed around departments before I found out what the issue was and whether she was alive or dead. I'm not doing that again.

coxesorangepippin · 29/05/2024 13:09

Block

See my post above. Unless you don't have family members that you love, a call from a hospital can come out of the blue.

I haven't really, if DH disappeared off the radar, I guess it could be him, I can be reached by text or voicemail if needed.

ginoclocksomewhere · 29/05/2024 13:18

If I'm expecting a call from Dr etc, I'll answer.

Otherwise I won't. If they don't leave a voicemail, it's not important.
