What do you do when you get a call from a private call

I tend to ignore it

Depends and I might answer but if no response or that call centre lull, then call is blocked and reported as a scam. On the whole if it is important, or you are known a message will be left. No message, no ringing back as too often it is a scam and some of these scams costs!!

I answer it, and if it's telesales or a scam I sing to them until they hang up. Or put the phone to one side and practice my musical instrument.

My FIL engages them in a conversation about all his medical ailments, a mixture of real and totally made up🤣

Ponderingwindow · 29/05/2024 15:19

The school and doctor are either in my contacts or tend to identify themselves these days.

so unless I am expecting a call, I ignore it. If it is important they will leave a message. It’s rarely anyone but a scammer. Occasionally it’s about a legitimate delivery or a tradesperson and I just call them back immediately.

Frogandfish · 29/05/2024 16:16

Answer. Nearly everyone I deal with calls on a withheld number (medical). If it's spam or sales i tell them to please remove my number (they probably don't) and hang up.

SpongeBob2022 · 29/05/2024 16:37

If my phone rings, I answer it.

I didn't realise checking numbers/not answering was a 'thing'. Very Mumsnet!

Noticeimnotreacting · 29/05/2024 16:39

I answer it as its usually a healthcare appointment.

DaisyChain505 · 29/05/2024 16:50

As this is posted in relationships let me guess….your partner is shady with their phone and doesn’t take withheld calls infront of you.

Fairyliz · 29/05/2024 17:02

I answer because I find medical calls or banks etc will not leave a voicemail due to ‘data protection’.
A bit stupid as they are calling me on number I gave them for contact.

TealDog · 29/05/2024 17:06

I get really stressed about stuff like this so I usually ignore the first call, unless I’m expecting one, and if they call again I will answer. It is really stupid and I should just pick it up on the first call, but I get very anxious about phone calls.

LizzieBennett73 · 29/05/2024 17:14

I always answer, as when my Dad was terminally ill I'd get calls from all sorts of unknown/private numbers and if you didn't answer, it was physically impossible to call them back again.

I'm registered with the TPS and love asking how they got my number and can I take their name so I can report them if it's a scam call.

GreenWheat · 29/05/2024 17:17

I answer in case it's someone I need to talk to, and end the call if not.

xxSideshowAuntSallyxx · 29/05/2024 19:29

The vet comes up as Private number, so does the doctor and dentist.

Most companies come up with a number even if it's the switchboard,I Google any number I don't recognise and usually it comes up with something.

Although I had my mobile provider switchboard saved as my ex as he used to work for them so when they called me and his picture and name popped up I was like "what the fuck does he want 🙄" and answered rather abruptly.

GreenFairies · 29/05/2024 19:30

Why do you keep ignoring your estate agent too if you can see their number? Do you answer the phone to anyone…?

Kangarude · 29/05/2024 19:35

I answer it. As others have said, I end the call if it’s. someone I don’t care to speak to, but I’m obviously strange because I also answer knocks on the door - even when home alone 😱 😂

Helloworld56 · 29/05/2024 19:41

I answer as it's always a pre arranged call from the gp. I wouldn't answer if I wasn't expecting a call.

Starseeking · 29/05/2024 19:42

I answer it.

My Dad ignores calls from unknown numbers, then complains he's missed a call from the hospital 🙄🙄🙄

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 29/05/2024 19:42

I answer. Why wouldn't you? What do you think is going to happen if you answer and it's spam or someone you don't want to talk to? Just hang up!

Roundroundthegarden · 29/05/2024 19:53

Ignore it. School calls from their number.

saraclara · 29/05/2024 19:54

Exactly! I answered a call earlier this week that was from a number I didn't know. It was a solar energy person. I just hung up. It took five seconds of my life, max.

Getting a voicemail, calling the voicemail, pressing the right buttons, listening to the message... That's already at least 30 seconds. Trying to get hold of the person who left the message? Could be hours.

I'd rather take the five seconds.

RedHelenB · 29/05/2024 19:55

Answer it . Although my mobile flags suspected spam calls and I ignore those.

GentlemanJohnny · 29/05/2024 19:57

Answer it. In our house it is almost always one dept. or another of the NHS.

BeachHutsAndDeckchairs · 29/05/2024 19:58

Stare at my phone in horror until it stops ringing and I can either ignore it or wait for a voicemail message - if it's anything important then they usually leave a message.

MitskiMoo · 29/05/2024 20:06

@Musicaltheatremum barely. I have a life limiting condition but had felt increasingly bone achingly exhausted and symptomatic. It happened so gradually (and due to the rest of my health) I thought it was normal for my condition. They said I was very fortunate not to have had a heart attack and stroke and had never seen such low numbers occurring without major trauma, apart from in JWs.
Once the numbers were confirmed they wouldn't even let me go to the loo alone...I'd driven there.

bluetopazlove · 29/05/2024 20:27

Nah I normally ignore or pass to my husband to answer most people who need to get a hold of me know my number so wouldn't normally bother .

It's not my experience that cold callers leave voice mails. They hang up.
