Would you date someone who put 'Right' as their political affiliation on dating app?

As title states. I don't think I would care as I didn't bother voting. But I HATE this government.

Oh and the last “left” government introduced tuition fees, was it in 1997/1998? The current “right” government have increased them by triple the amount and scrapped all the grants leaving the current graduates saddled with a s load of student debt.

Nope. You'd have some ok conversations and they'd he would slip in some dig about people in boats and I'd have to walk away. Not worth it.

This!!

HAF1119 · 16/05/2024 22:13

@newdater32 if you like green vote green. I never fully understand when people don't vote for who they want as it's a 'wasted vote and no one votes for them'

The only way that will change is by voting for them. I don't vote for the 'main parties' and I strongly feel that unless you believe in them no one should, then change would occur

burnoutbabe · 16/05/2024 22:14

What are the options?

I am fairly sure I put something like that on my dating ad -right of centre. If you have that option and they selected far right then maybe not. But if options really are just right left or centre then yes.

pocketheart · 16/05/2024 22:15

Not a chance!!

Starseeking · 16/05/2024 22:15

No way.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 16/05/2024 22:16

If they are right enough to actively put 'right' on their profile? Nope.

OfficerChurlish · 16/05/2024 22:18

"Right" is a specific political designation - in between "Centre Right" and "Far Right". In the UK at the moment, the Conservatives would be considered Centre Right to Right, the DUP and Reform UK would be Right, and I suppose something like the BNP would be Far Right.

If he's using it correctly (he may not be) he's probably to the right of you, and critical of the centre and left parties, but not necessarily a supporter of the current UK government. It's probably safe to say he's in favor of fairly unfettered capitalism, the markets "regulating themselves", very limited and well-regulated welfare provisions, and British unionism. Other views may differ.

I think it's probably more of an issue the more passionate he is about politics, if you're disinterested. Very generally, you'd likely be better off with someone who doesn't share your politics and doesn't talk politics than someone who is very into politics, regardless of where he stands politically.

SamW98 · 16/05/2024 22:19

Yes - but I’d swipe left for anyone putting ‘left’ as their political views

Churchview · 16/05/2024 22:22

So funny to read some of the answers in the light of the 'well the left are meant to be so tolerant but it's the right wing voters who are actually more tolerant' posts.

PermanentTemporary · 16/05/2024 22:22

I'm not interested in what their politics is labelled but I'm interested in their views. I'd be wary of anyone putting any political label on themselves- 'right' no, 'left' no, 'classical liberal' fuck no, 'communist' grow up, etc etc. I don't want to be lectured or to be with a person that puts people into boxes, I want someone very open and tolerant - because they need to be able to listen while I rant on about how much I hate the Tories.

Screamingabdabz · 16/05/2024 22:22

I am completely and absolutely opposite in terms of political affiliation to some of the colleagues I work with. Interestingly we all get on well and have similar values, education, views and are passionate about social justice. We just think there are different ways of achieving it. I think if you are so closed minded to reject a person on one box then that’s pretty dumb.

Purplecatshopaholic · 16/05/2024 22:23

Absolutely no way. Would be glad he put it on his profile though - saves us both time!

HulaChick · 16/05/2024 22:24

Yes ofcourse I would- it's 'left' that would put me off.

An easy swipe left for me.

Tuftedandbusted · 16/05/2024 22:32

No. period.

Charlie2121 · 16/05/2024 22:33

If anybody put “left” on their profile I would discount them immediately.

You don’t need to have identical views as your DP but there needs to be a reasonable degree of commonality. I couldn’t imagine having a DH who voted Labour.

It’s less of an issue with your wider social circle although I’d estimate that no more than about 10% of the people I know well would vote Labour so there probably
is a degree of gravitation towards like minded people.

But if you're online dating you have to start filtering somewhere, don't you? You can't pursue every possibility.

So it might seem like a "dumb" reason, but I wouldn't have the inclination to put effort into connecting with a complete stranger who I can immediately see might rub me up the wrong way 😂

Like I dunno, if he had football fan in his profile, I'd also move on. Perfectly wonderful guys who like football out there, I'm sure, but I'm not keen to spend time finding out how much of their life is taken up with it.

RemarkablyBrightCreature · 16/05/2024 22:36

BeaRF75 · 16/05/2024 22:04

Actually, OP, the Conservatives are currently struggling because many of their traditional voters think they have moved too far to the left.
But I wouldn't judge someone for how they vote. We are a democracy and are all allowed a choice. Plus, people do change their minds!
I would struggle with someone who didn't respect that my views may differ from theirs. It's OK to have a debate, but it's also OK to agree to differ.

Of course it’s ok to differ but there’s differ and having such wildly opposing world views that getting along would be tricky. I couldn’t date someone who aligned himself to most Tory policies - he’s said what he needs to say about his approach to life. That’s fine but not for me.

To me this just looks like 3 options: are you apolitical, one of three shades of left or literally any version of right.

So...I would have NO idea whether to swipe right or not! It feels like it's lumping in your neo-nazis with your "I didn't mind David Cameron"

GentlemanJay · 16/05/2024 22:38

Some people may be put off by seeing "left" on a dating profile. People are allowed to have an opinion.

Anyway, Labour will be in power soon and the country will be fine and dandy.

HulaChick · 16/05/2024 22:24

Same here!

OddityOddityOdd · 16/05/2024 22:40

No. If you need to ask you know the answer.
Mind you I'd also rule out:
Sport - every type you can name
Brexit supporter
Gym membership
Gambling
General twatiness

so I'm probably not best person to ask.

menopausalmare · 16/05/2024 22:43

Right = bad
Left = good

This is wrong. They are points of view and both have faults.
