How old were you when you met your best friend

I'm 36 and don't have anyone I am particularly close to but I struggle meeting new people now I'm older. Is there hope for me yet?

I think the concept of "best friends" is a bit redundant as you get older and busier and have your own family etc. I think it's often who you're more situationally likely to be in contact with. I have several very good solid friendships in my 40s which have spanned many years but I could ascribe "best friend" status to them and I don't think it's necessary.

HulaChick · 26/03/2024 21:53

I was 4 on my first day at primary school. Still 'best' friends nearly 50 years later!

idontlikealdi · 26/03/2024 21:55

Birth. She was two months older than me.

Meh. Don't have one and never have.

boodlebeep · 26/03/2024 22:12

2 closest (best) friends. Met first when 15 and second when 34.

MaryFuckingFerguson · 26/03/2024 22:14

11, when we started secondary school. 41 years later, still going strong and there’s no-one whose company I love more. Our kids have grown up together, we’re mutual godparents, our husbands are incredibly close, we’ve had decades of shared holidays and celebrations - I think we’re very lucky.

I’m also still really close to 6 others from our year.

I have made many other lifelong friends from uni, NCT and the kids’ schools, but my childhood friends are the most special.

I have 3 sisters that have no friends from school, so I think I’m a bit unusual.

skippy67 · 26/03/2024 22:18

I don't have a best friend. I wouldn't like the pressure! I have lots of friends, some of whom I'm very close to. But a best friend? No...

Alicewinn · 26/03/2024 22:20

14 -met in art class

zeddybrek · 26/03/2024 22:28

23, met during our teacher training.

I thought I was odd for not keeping in touch with anyone from school.

Sameratdifferenthat · 26/03/2024 22:31

About 53.

Whatsgoingonwithmyhead · 26/03/2024 22:31

I met a friend who I am currently very close to (and hope that continues) when I was about 39/40. We met through a hobby but I am currently not doing that hobby for various reasons but we still meet for lunches / walks and exchange lots of messages

Whatsgoingonwithmyhead · 26/03/2024 22:32

Oh and I should add prior to meeting her I had really struggled to make any friends - like I had literally had a 15-20 year period of not meeting anyone I just clicked with

Tootytoot78 · 26/03/2024 22:32

We met in junior school aged 9, and 60 years on we are still each others best friend!

BridgetRandomfuck · 26/03/2024 22:32

I thought I had my 'best friend' from school, but that ended abruptly in my 20s. Met the person who is actually my best friend when I was 30 - she's much more suited to me and made me realise that what you think is a close relationship often occurs from situation and/or length of knowing the person.

goingdownfighting · 26/03/2024 22:34

18 and 28

Also close friends with my husband's schools friends who he has known for at least 30 years. I was aged 23 then. Also have a wider circle of friends who I'd like to spend time with but don't have the time.

Plenty of friends for reasons and seasons over the years though.

mondaytosunday · 26/03/2024 22:35

I've had several 'best friends'. Last one I met at 50. It's hard to maintain that closeness when you move away, and I moved 70 miles two and a half years ago and she doesn't make the effort I do to keep seeing each other - only if I go to her.
But yea, you can make best friends at any time.

bingoringo4 · 26/03/2024 22:35

22

Doteycat · 26/03/2024 22:35

The woman i consider my female best friend and will be till i die, i met at dd1s playschool.

Jokl · 26/03/2024 22:35

5, I had just started at a new school (moved after reception year) and the teacher assigned a girl to show me around and look after me on my first day. That girl said she didn’t want to and that made me quite sad, so another little girl gave me a hug and said she’d look after me instead. We’ve been best friends ever since, all through school and college, we were each other’s maid of honour and now we’re godmothers to each other’s children.

I’ve three others who I would also class as best friends. We met when we started secondary school, so 11.

LorlieS · 26/03/2024 22:37
  1. I'm married to him.
amiahoarder · 26/03/2024 22:37

I was 13 at school when we started different options and got to know different people from other classes. But I have made some very close friends in my most recent job age 42+ and I feel very lucky to have met them. We've vowed to keep in touch even though we don't all work there any more.

Meh. Don't have one and never have.

Ditto. But it would have been nice imo.

Onelifeonly · 26/03/2024 22:44

We went to the same secondary school, but in different tutor groups; became friendly around 14/15 and best friends at 16 when we started sixth form. Heading towards 50 years of friendship.I have other close friends but she is still my bestie.
