New man but he shoots as a hobby ...

jumpinjax · 07/08/2023 10:27

He seems lovely but he's told me from the outset that he shoots as a hobby.
I don't have any major feelings about shooting one way or another , because I know so little about it but now told me that he's going on a big game shoot in Autumn and I don't know what I feel ... except maybe pity for the animals.
Would you get rid straight away?

I would be fine with it. Just eaten a ham sandwich so I haven’t got a leg to stand on.

dawngreen · 07/08/2023 13:46

@Hollyisblue Stop trying to avoid the question!!!

Are you a pig?
(I’ll get me coat…)

Big game? Absolutely not - straight in the bin.

I abhor hunting of any kind. Shooting, like grouse, if it's on an ethically managed estate where there haven't been loads of non-native species shipped in so there's something for the city types to shoot at, maybe. But ask why they like killing things because thats the crux of it. It's so common to ship stuff in to have hunting/shooting as a commercial activity on estates and that is totally wrong and takes it to a level beyond wild game and natural population management etc. Its just giving city types something to badly aim at and feel big about themselves over and while I appreciate the economy etc, its not quite right.

Have been veggie and probably going back towards it.

LTB

sorry but someone who wants to shoot elephants, tigers etc is clearly botched in the head department.

they say its 'controlled' - what does that even mean?

a lot of such hunts are advertised as 'for the good of the wild life" when they are not

if they want to prove their superiority over the animals and get trophies, let them fight them hand to hand and see what happens. bloody cowards.

sydsmum · 07/08/2023 13:49

I genuinely can't believe that you would even question the morality of killing elephants and big cats. This excuse of a "man" is the lowest of the low. I know exactly what I would do with him...

Moveoverdarlin · 07/08/2023 13:50

Sorry I take back what I said, you’re obviously not in the UK. When you said a big game shoot, I assumed you meant pheasants. I would not be comfortable with a man shooting an elephant. No way.

ExtraOnions · 07/08/2023 13:52

Grouse moors … destroying the countryside, introducing a monoculture that drives out our native species, and the persecution (killing) of birds of prey. Birds raised so some chinless wonders can get their kicks killing them (and no they are not eaten they are left in plies to rot).
Grouse moors, and managed game shoots are an utter blight.
Plus, the drainage of the moors to make it work for “shoots” leading to more moorland fires, and more flooding below them.

Enjoying killing animals is the mark of a sociopath

Nosleepforthismum · 07/08/2023 13:52

I’m not sure I could look at him with anything other than contempt tbh.

anyolddinosaur · 07/08/2023 13:54

I'm an omnivore. Killing animals humanely because you plan to eat them is one thing, killing for sport another. I understand that the reserves may need to cull some animals from time to time and that the hunts benefit other animals, I still would not want to be with someone who enjoyed killing.

I'd find it easier to shoot the man than an elephant.

Hollyisblue · 07/08/2023 13:56

@CloudyMcCloud The update at 10.42 says it is controlled. Does this mean control over what the target is such as not males or not young ones. with Rangers to point out the acceptable ones.
My exH used to shoot clays. he was never a good enough shot to go after live game.

Lifecanbebeautiful12 · 07/08/2023 13:56

Definitely a no-go for me. I’m not vegetarian and don’t really see the point of that argument - is eating meat the same as shooting an animal yourself? I wouldn’t be able to look at an animal and shoot it. I can’t even kill a spider. It isn’t about morality, I just couldn’t be with a person who is sadistic enough to enjoy taking the life of an animal. No correlation between that and eating meat.

MidnightMeltdown · 07/08/2023 13:58

Deer population often needs to be thinned in order to protect environments.

@Pinkbonbon

Even so, there's a difference between professional, targeted, population control programs, who cull in a humane manor according to a very strict set of guidelines, and some twerp who goes out shooting things because he gets a kick out if it.

I wouldn't date someone who got enjoyment out of going out and killing anything, I don't care what specifies it is.

user9630721458 · 07/08/2023 13:58

It's not very sporting when one side has a gun. Can't imagine why people call it a sport. It's more like an execution.

MintJulia · 07/08/2023 13:58

No I couldn't live with that either, and I shoot for a hobby.

I shoot clays, but I have friends who shoot for pest control - rats, crows, pigeons, and culling dear - no problem with that. I can even cope with pheasant shooting as long as I don't have to join in. I eat pheasant & venison so it would be hypocritical to disapprove.

But big game, just no. Completely unnecessary, no benefit to anyone. It isn't food.

DrNo007 · 07/08/2023 13:58

I’d have no problem if the shot birds were eaten as meat but read a statistic ages ago that only a tiny percentage of shot game end up in the food supply. If this is correct I’d love to know why.

Doggytastic · 07/08/2023 13:59

100% deal breaker for me.

QueenBitch666 · 07/08/2023 13:59

Not sure about that. All our pigeons and pheasants do straight to the local butcher. Most estates need every penny to pay salaries & maintain buildings etc. Any shoot not selling their bag is missing a trick.

almostoverthehill · 07/08/2023 14:03

Big game? Is he one of those cunts who go off and shoot lions, gifaffes, rhinos

helloelsie · 07/08/2023 14:04

To all the people saying they are fine with it if it's legal - just because it's legal DOESN'T MEAN IT IS RIGHT.

The hunting you speak of especially is unethical and cruel. There is no way I can be on board with it no matter what sort of argument there is to try and excuse it. But ultimately you are the one dating this guy. It only matters at the end of the day what you think. But what sort of world are you leaving for your children (if you have any) and what sort of example will this give them.

@MintJulia good to hear, thanks

Readthebooks · 07/08/2023 14:07

'You ask because you have no idea'

I mean it's quite simple. Do you think it's ok to kill majestical animals for fun or not?. That's all you need to know. Either you think it's ok or you don't, surely you have an opinion?

It's good you do that @Mintjulia But The Ecologist states 52% of pheasants are not eaten, but burned or left in piles to rot. So that's just over half the amount shot are eaten. That was a report from 2018 in the UK.
