What is it with men and conspiracy theories 🙄

Online dating and it seems the only men I seem to be attracted to seem to have so many issues that come up after a few chats!

Latest one, and not uncommon by a long shot, has told me that he doesn't pay his water bill because water is free from the sky and the water companies are poisoning us (but doesn't have a distiller so drinks out of plastic bottles and that can cause cancer if all your drinks are from plastic), doesn't pay council tax, doesn't work because he's awake and it's part of the matrix, 5g is going to fuck us all up and our cows are now being injected by another Bill Gates vaccine. I asked him what he did with his day if he doesn't work and he spends his days researching on what is going wrong in the world in the fight against good and evil.. oh and the huge American pedophile rings and social workers trafficking kids. I am a bloody SW, no we don't want your kids, caseloads are overwhelmed enough as it is thanks.

I just think it's sad that his life has become this. I told him we aren't compatible as we don't believe in the same stuff. I feel bad for him and did like the look of him but these conspiracy theories are mental illness. It's almost like they are the new religion with the fevered zelous that the newly converts preach.. even when you tell them you're not interested in conspiracy theories they still bang them down your throat!

Conspiracy theory belief is equally weighted by gender. The only major difference found in a 2020 YouGov survey about it was leave v remain voters

Makes sense. After all, 50% of the population have to have an IQ below 100.

TheoTheopolis23 · 31/07/2023 00:30

The Rothschild one is an antisemitic one I think. From white supremacists in the US

Yes.

My former friend managed to hit on COVID, all vaccinations, black lives matter, a sniff of the antisemitic stuff, the world economic forum, the older member of staff who repeatedly questioned the black woman community group representative at Buckingham palace and moved her hair without asking - (she shouldn't have been sacked, older generation etc.), Pfizer, some pharmacy guy whose name I've forgotten who experimented on aids patients ... Not sure if I've missed any, all within about half an hour. They clearly must click from one vid to another that are linked/suggested.

Anyway the covid vaccine is killing young people and causing miscarriages. They lied about it reducing transmission and Pfizer has been caught lying (they haven't, some poor rep was ambushed at a questions thing and confirmed that they'd not been tasked with and didn't have time to test it for transmission, it was not in their remit).
Sge wishes she'd never had any vaccines, she thinks she's gave been fine..... She clearly hasn't seen the people I've seen wheeling themselves around 3rd world countries on share boards cause of Polio, she's rather lucky she didn't make the decision to take her changed with tuberculosis etc.
The problem with ppl in western democracies is they're too fkg spoilt and sheltered from the realities of the world when you don't have everything you have in western democracies
.

I agree there’s a lot of undiagnosed personality disorders out there in both men and women. The two people I know who get repeatedly sucked into conspiracy theories (one man / one woman) both have serious trust issues with at least one parent. They both bang on about being free thinkers but then parrot so much nonsense from idiots they’ve watched on social media. Are you putting something in your profile suggesting that you find it hard to trust people? It may be what’s attracting them to you.

Celia24 · 31/07/2023 00:33

Youre right OP. A close friend of mine's boyfriend is like this and she's very normal.

I also noticed a guy I grew up with on a dating app yesterday, normal looking profile. But then on Facebook that night he was posting conspiracy theories.

It does seem to be men primarily.

TheoTheopolis23 · 31/07/2023 00:35

his profile picture was in an office wearing work clothes

He doesn't even have the courage of his convictions.

He portraits himself on SM/dating sites as being an employed office worker.

He could easily change that photo if he wanted.

Thanks AlBot but I've deleted my profile tonight. I'm utterly fed up of not liking anyone and then the ones who I think oo you like nice and match with are either conspiracy theorists or come on sexually too strong before I've met them. I'm going to concentrate on living my nice life and if I meet someone naturally in real life then that's great but if not I have a lovely life anyway. I've had dc, had a husband and have no need for another one. I did want a boyfriend and butterflies but I'm over it now.

You’re wise to do this. 👍🏼

SuperGinger · 31/07/2023 04:34

@Titicacacandle it sounds like our local postman might be of your online dates. He spouts absolute nonsense

JambalayaOrGumbo · 31/07/2023 05:03

Don't get me started either on conspiracy theorists - but the best one is that apparently as an Australian, according to the flat earth brigade, I'm not real! I'm glad they were able to let me know, coz geez, I never guessed - thanks.🙃

"Apparently, all Australians are “computer generated” or “actors”. When you fly to Australia, you’re actually being taken to different islands near “South America”. Allegedly, Australia is “just a cover-up” as Britain never actually took their criminals there. They just dumped them all in the sea."

Titicacacandle · 30/07/2023 22:33

Before conspiracy theories took over I used to quite like a debate around how the world is ran, what the media does etc. But now I can't stand it! What really winds me up is that all these people seem to care about child trafficking, corruption in gov, sewerage companies but yet don't see the real things going on under their eyes like the hundreds of thousands unaccompanied asylum seeker children that have been trafficked all over Europe, real organ harvesting, sex slavery, modern day slavery that is happening. That utility companies are making so much money and their are ministers in the cabinet with shares in these firms so no desire to make them affordable etc etc. But hey lets believe in all this alt right religious stuff about the devil in music lyrics and pretend we're better than everyone else because we're awake.. it's utter bollocks and I can't cope with it anymore!!

yes I find it interesting how the alt-right are desperate to “expose” certain child trafficking circles, but seem to care little for familial abuse which is the most common and the plight of refugee kids

Bloody hell, New Zealanders must be hovering in outer space then...

Gowlett · 31/07/2023 06:07

Totally agree, Titicacacandle. Me & my ex-friend (Rabbit Hole) used to have brilliant conversations (and much of what we’d talk about were real problems / dodgy dealings / media agenda etc…).
But when she went all the way down… To the bottom. She became a broken record & would bark “wake up!” in my face. A shame, she was a good friend & miss her so much! But I’m not the only one.

Spacemoon · 31/07/2023 06:22

Oh I don't know, I find conspiracy theories really interesting to be honest. Some are obviously hilarious to think some people genuinely believe it, but many of them have bits that are true when you do some digging and it's obviously just been blown way out of proportion to be more interesting. For example, I believe the 9/11 conspiracies and I believe there is some truth to the elite peado ring one, but of course much of it is added BS for the drama and intrigue.

The problem happens when conspiracies take over peoples lives, which we are seeing more of post covid sadly. It goes beyond a bit of fun and interesting conversation for them and becomes an obsession. It all boils down to trust issues with these people. People with a lack of trust will naturally gravitate towards conspiracies. When they find others who believe conspiracies, it feels like they've found their people and in that sense, it can become quite cult like. Which is obviously concerning. Both my husband and brother in law are massive conspiracy theorists, and interestingly, both have major childhood trust issues. Luckily, neither of them have been sucked in to the major extreme where it has taken over their lives, but during covid, I would say it definitely peaked!

Personally, I'm equally as concerned about people who NEVER believe conspiracies as I am for those who ALWAYS believe them. Both have trust issues - either too trusting, or lacking trust.

TerrorAustralis · 31/07/2023 06:23

Conspiracy theories attract people for the same reason that cults attract people. It appeals to their sense of personal exceptionalism and gives them feelings of being special for having access to this ‘knowledge’ that most people don’t have.

Like cults, people end up in conspiracy theory echo chambers where everyone is agreeing with and reinforcing their beliefs.

A friend’s dad has literally swapped being in a religious cult for full-blown QAnon beliefs. He is way down the rabbit hole, and seems to have taken his wife with him too.

Anyway, as an ‘Australian’ I’m still waiting for my cheque for being an actor all my life.

Cross-posted, but I do agree with this. You have got some really crazy sounding stuff, that actually turns out to be true (MK-Ultra) and a lot of conspiracies start from a grain of truth. But increasingly it seems like there are more completely batshit/bullshit conspiracy theories out there.

Tontostitis · 31/07/2023 06:26

I'm really struggling with my dh on this. He's retired and endlessly on YouTube reading utter rubbish and constantly saying 'they' but cant say who 'they' are., I'm finding it very wearing and yesterday actually told him to put down his phone and grow up, which did not help.

patterpittercake · 31/07/2023 06:38

It's the way they bore on and on about it as if it's impressive.
In my experience they're usually lonely men who smoke too much weed and have too much time on their hands.

patterpittercake · 31/07/2023 06:46

Its usually worth telling them that basically conspiracy theorists are no different to religious people: incapable of being comfortable of the random chaos of life, the need to attribute life to all seeing, all powerful thing who is in control. It's no wonder conspiracy theorists are on the rise as religion is on the decline.
And then ask them who 'they' are. There is always a 'they'. They'll say something like the government or similar. I like to then point out that current government are actually quite inept and that is much more scary than intelligent all powerful forces.

frozendaisy · 31/07/2023 06:55

What is needed is a conspiracy about dating apps to keep them off there.

But even QAnon or whatever the fuck it's called know that the sad little brain washed sheep need some hope to get their end away.

meridian37 · 31/07/2023 07:01

It's the daily OLD moaning thread

Everybody knows it's shit but goes on there anyway, and then moans

drinkuptheezider · 31/07/2023 07:06

I would have thought you were talking about my colleague. He is a happily married man, though. We have to listen to this rubbish very loudly spouted all day at work.

The stuff about the aliens at the moment is really feeding this too, he keeps going on about all the stuff that's 'coming out now' he is entertaining at times but I'm amazed customers don't complain at some of his extreme stuff as its offensive.
He was onto pre-covid but really fell headlong down rabbit holes during lockdown.

YRGAM · 31/07/2023 07:12

RantyAnty · 30/07/2023 23:27

Read through several studies that men by a large magnitude believe conspiracy theories. I was more shocked at the age group which was 18 to 25.

It did mention wanting to have a scapegoat and learned helplessness as factors for it

@RantyAnty do you have links to these? Would be interesting to see as it doesn't match what I've seen

Shurleyknot · 31/07/2023 07:12

I ended a friendship over it. It is so draining to listen to and the SM posts with them all seeing fucking eyes drive me insane. There are two female CT's on my fb page and I just feel so sorry for their families.

frozendaisy · 31/07/2023 07:20

There have always been conspiracy theories. Marylin killed by the Kennedys etc.

Some where fun asides but people had to actually seek out and read actual pages if they so desired.

But there's a big leap from that to not working, paying bills and thinking pigeons have batteries.

Fucking idiocy and not something you could date. Nevermind live with.

LindorDoubleChoc · 31/07/2023 07:20

Hopefully not every single man out there online dating is like this?

I've never knowingly had a conversation with a conspiracy theorist! I can't imagine what it would be like. Oh, tell a lie actually. The middle aged male dickhead I worked with who believed Madeleine McCann's parents killed her with sleeping pills and then concealed and disposed of her body. Stupid stupid twonk.
