DP and I are considering getting married abroad at some point but not sure where. Where was yours and would you recommend it?

Hi I got married in Cyprus at a hotel called Golden Coast in Protaras they had a little chapel and I have to say it was amazing couldn't have wished for a better wedding, 30+ friends and family travelled over with us and we also had a reception back in the uk when we got home. Highly recommended.

LOOBYLOU2 · 26/02/2008 20:58

We got married in Siena, Italy
absolutely gorgeous and stress free.
Wonderful meal in local restaurant for a fraction of the cost in the UK
17 friends and family joined us - thanks to low cost flights to Pisa!

suwoo · 26/02/2008 21:02

Florida in 2005 so it could be combined with a family holiday for the 15 that came with us. It wasn't a cheesy Disney wedding, but a civil ceremony in the equivalent of our stately homes. It was fab and I loved it.

macdoodle · 26/02/2008 21:05

We got married in Sri Lanka 1999 and then straight to Maldives for honeymoon - just the 2 of us was wonderful...pity the marriage didn't go the same way

LyraSilvertongue · 26/02/2008 21:18

At a beauty spot on the shores of Lake Tahoe, Nevada. Sunny clear day, snow on the ground, just us and parents. Went skiing in the afternoon at 'Heavenly'. It was heavenly no bureaucracy, no arguements about guests & flowers, just simple & stress free. We booked nothing til we got there then went through the Yellow Pages & found the Reverend Bob - job done, no regrets.

BrownSuga · 26/02/2008 21:30

In the desert outside of Vegas. Just the 2 of us. Then we booked a couple of houses at Whistler for our friends/family and had a ski week, and a wedding dinner at a chateau there. Fantastic.

LyraSilvertongue · 26/02/2008 22:03

Those sound amazing
Any more? We need more inspiration!

If you are interested in Italy, we used Italia Romantica. They are based in London.
Google for full info. They were brilliant and handled all formalities etc
Our civil ceremony was in the Palazzo di Publico in the town square www.bluffton.edu/~sullivanm/sienapubbl/palazzopubbl.html

I'm a wedding photographer and have gone out to Italy to do a lovely wedding for a British couple. I can ask them who arranged it for them if you like. I think it was a company called Secret Tuscany. They held it in a gorgeous huge villa where lots of the guests could stay and the ceremony was held in the grounds. Breath taking. I also go out to shoot lots of weddings in the Caribbean- Antigua is a lovely place to get married. Most hotels will do the ceremony or there are beautiful pretty local churches. It's a good easy place for Brits to visit- don't need any vaccinations, everyone speaks English, no nasty creepy crawlies or snakes, plus sea is calm and beautiful and safe for kids and adults. Beaches are breath taking and white sand and lots of the weddings I've done do the ceremony on the beach. Quite cheap flights also. CAT me if you want more info- I do loads of abroad weddings so can give you info.

Vegas nothing glam, but cheaper than over here, with the people who could be bothered!

Las Vegas 1997.Lovely & stressfree, far, far cheaper than the UK.We had a proper vicar conduct the ceremony in the chapel at Treasure Island & then had a meal in a lovely private dining room overlooking The Strip. The next day we drove off & spent the next 2 weeks touring Arizona,Utah,New Mexico & Colorado. It was fantastic.

AttilaTheMeerkat · 27/02/2008 08:07

We were married on Maui in 1995 in the grounds of a hotel with two witnesses. It was fantastic.

shoptilidrop · 27/02/2008 11:20

Wow, there are some really exotic locations here. I think I'd like some guaranteed sunshine.

Peasoup, what the money like in wedding photography? Is it hard work? I'm considering retraining once DSs are both at school and wedding photography is on my list of possibilities.

OP posts:
Zebedeedoodah · 27/02/2008 14:06

We did it in Cornwall, which is nearly abroad

I'd recommend Cape Town though. Stunning!

peasoup · 27/02/2008 15:33

Antigua is guarenteed sunshine; no rainy season, just sun, sun, and more sun. Not too sweaty-nice sea breezes. Can't wait till going there next. i've plenty of weddingy contacts there if you want to look into it. The money in this biz I guess must depend how many bookings you get which I guess must depend how good your photos are, so I'd say it varies greatly. If you are getting lots of bookings then it's good pay for a days work. You do end up spending a long time after the day fiddling around editing and compiling the shots however.
You have to work well/photograph well under pressure! The adrenelin rush is huge as if they cut the cake and you miss it you're in TROUBLE! Cue lots of rushing around and VERY,VERY quick trips to the loo or none whatsoever- sometimes over a 13 hour day. Cue aching feet like you've run a marathon. Often get fed VERY well though It si hard work but lovely to be a part of such gorgeous special days.
