As the title says. To quote my friend:

I've fully paid off my £8k car I brought 5 years ago and I've just been told it's worth at least £10k on the second hand market, so I'm told. Of course it is.
I've now fully paid off the £1k debit I had on my council tax (due to error on council part) and now I'm in credit. Of course you are.
I needed a new front door so I brought one for £1k (her mum paid, I know she didn't have the cash herself

I just ponder to Believe her sometimes

Am I bitter ?

If she bought these things and paid off the debt, maybe her mum gave or lent her the money?

Mommasgotabrandnewbag · 20/07/2023 06:42

Comparison is the thief of joy

Overthebow · 20/07/2023 06:45

I don’t understand how these are so unbelievable? 1k for a front door is about right, she bought it doesn’t matter who paid, for a time recently second hand cars were selling for more than people bought them as there was a huge backlog for new cars, £1k council tax debt isn’t a huge amount and they may have taken it in instalments by direct debit so every chance she was on credit at the end. All plausible and not huge amounts of money.

greenspaces4peace · 20/07/2023 06:46

I couldn’t be friends with someone who doesn’t tell the truth.
bye bye

BillyNoM8s · 20/07/2023 06:48

If she bought a car with finance though she presumably ended up paying more than £8k for it?

Cars have held their value quite well since Covid due to parts shortages. I think that's tapering off now. That goes for all cars though, so if she sells and buys another car then she'll be paying more for whatever she buys too.

I'm not sure why you'd be jealous of her paying off council tax debt or her mum buying her a door.

christmastreefarm · 20/07/2023 06:50

To be fair - I bought my car 7 years ago and at my insurance renewal the estimated value was only £500 less than I paid then....

yogasaurus · 20/07/2023 06:51

Second cars are holding value very well; if she got it at a good price, this is very possibly true.

The title makes it sound like you’re a bit pissed off your friend has got out of a ‘bucket of shit’. Do you not think she should?

Newnamehiwhodis · 20/07/2023 06:53

ugh, I would not want a “friend” like you.

Janieforever · 20/07/2023 06:53

These things are all very plausible. Can I ask why do you resent her not having issues?

Karwomannghia · 20/07/2023 06:55

So you actually want to see your friend sink in the shit? Would you enjoy that?

clpsmum · 20/07/2023 06:56

Newnamehiwhodis · 20/07/2023 06:53

This

They all sound completely plausible

Aposterhasnoname · 20/07/2023 06:57

My car is worth more now than when I bought, the second hand car market is insane. Not sure why paying off a debt or a new door costing £1000 is unbelievable.

WandaWonder · 20/07/2023 07:02

So OP because you have issues they have too?

NutellaNut · 20/07/2023 07:30

My step daughter keeps getting letters from the Mini dealership she bought her car from offering to sell it for more than she paid for it 3 or 4 years ago. So that sounds perfectly true in the current economic climate where some new cars are in short supply and second hand values have gone up. The other examples you give don’t sound unrealistic either. What’s your problem exactly, except jealousy?

LunaandLily · 20/07/2023 07:52

Caption does not match main body of post AT ALL

kannnet96 · 20/07/2023 07:55

My car is worth more than when I bought it four years ago. Was very surprised to find that out! These things happen. Not quite sure why you re so angry

RachelTopliss · 20/07/2023 07:57

Newnamehiwhodis · 20/07/2023 06:53

ugh, I would not want a “friend” like you.

Wouldn't it be better to give the op advice rather than this playground remark?

Thoughtful2355 · 20/07/2023 07:59

You sound jealous, everything here is about money, also I wouldnt disregard the car thing, i bought a car for 6k from a dealer and got 9 k back for it online.

Abouttimemum · 20/07/2023 08:03

I thought this was going to be about someone making terrible decisions and always coming out on top in spite of their lifestyle choices, which is irritating and I know a couple of people like that, but it’s not. You just sound jealous!

We paid up front for our 8k car 🤷‍♀️ we’re not rolling in it, just prefer to save and buy.

This is a brilliant saying, I am going to borrow it!

Aprilx · 20/07/2023 08:08

As the title says

Your title makes no sense!

And I am afraid the post only reflects poorly on you.

catsgoldfishandtoomanypets · 20/07/2023 08:10

@kannnet96 I'm not Angry. Its just stuff like this doesn't ever happen to me ! My car is now worth nothing, but is a bit older. We are desperate for a few things to be done around the house but there is never spare cash to do so. my friend didn't necessarily need to buy a new front door, but the mere mention of it and she gets given the cash for it. Same with another large purhase she needed to make. Just feeling that nothing ever goes right for us, even though we tow the line so to speak and work a hell of a lot more hours. My friend is one of those people who everything just falls at her feet

GoodChat · 20/07/2023 08:11

Second hand cars are selling for high values right now as companies are struggling to get parts for new cars.

Her mom paid for her new door, so what?

She's probably got £1k in her council tax account because they store it up and take the payments quarterly. Why is it an issue?

Maddy70 · 20/07/2023 08:12

Imagine having a friend that only wished you to have a shitty life.....

Accovobe · 20/07/2023 08:12

You do seem a bit bitter, yes.

I don't fully understand your the full issue with the examples you've given though. Especially the door one - is the issue she implied she paid for a door but actually her mum paid?

If you think she is lying/exaggerating all the time and it is draining you to the point you don't like her much or enjoy her company then it is probably time to stop pretending to be friends and move on.
