Can we share the dog?

Hello all

I am unfortunately going through the process of a divorce. It is mostly as amicable as can be. We are currently talking about whether we can share custody of our dog.

My ex is moving two hours away so our plan is one month on, one month off. Our dog loves us both equally and we can't see what else would be fair on either of us or our dog.

Just not sure whether this is realistic. Has anyone shared custody of a dog after a break up? Does the dog adjust ok - that's my main thing.

Thanks

I think you need to go and post in the dog house section of Mumsnet for advice from people who know about dogs.

But my view is no, this isn't going to work long term and isn't fair on your dog. I know a couple who separated and committed to giving the other first dibs on dog care when going on holiday, but I can't imagine any more than that being sustainable.

We share the dogs.
I work part time, so he has them while I'm at work for part of the week, I have them the rest of the week. We also have the dogs when either one of us is on holiday.
It works for us, saves the expense of daycare and boarding kennels, but we do only live 10 miles apart
