Just been on a visit to my elderly mil ,we had to share a abnb house with sil and her husband.
Everything was ok the first night, we had a nice dinner and had a few drinks together. Went to visit Mil at hospital. Things got tricky then. They wanted to get pizza and booze for the evening. Fine, I am on a diet so I said I will get my salad and make my own meal.
So at 7pm after walking the dogs, everything fine, I started to make my meal. They were upstairs having a drink, chatting everything fine. She then started saying, why does she have to be difficult, why not eat what we had planned? She didn't realise I heard her. So I went upstairs and was normal, started to eat my meal. She stormed downstairs and banged pots about and was obviously angry. I went to bed and left them to it.
In the morning I had a shower and she called my husband in ( her brother) to tell him I had left a coffee cup ring on the side of the shower! We then had to leave for 11am, cue, have you left your room okay? Have you left anything?. I said everything is fine.
We went to the car and all packed up. Then we realised she was in our room checking we had left it okay! I then absolutely lost it with my partner, told him she was out of order and ridiculous.
He said it's just my sis, it's what she is like.
Is it? Am I being too sensitive?

If the SIL had paid all or part of a security deposit, it was not necessarily wrong for her to check to confirm that everything was in order. She could have been a bit more discrete about it. Is it possible that she has OCD?

The take away from this brief trip is that you both should have learned that you do not make good traveling companions.

There is not much to be annoyed about at this point. You both learned a valuable lesson, and it only required spending just 1 night together.

Well, did you?

She’s a bit of a tit basically. And yeah, don’t go away with her again.

PeacefulPottering · 05/05/2023 01:06

We both paid the deposit.
Yes, I would definitely do things apart in the future. My OH likes to be with her and she does too. If it were up to me we would have hotel rooms and just meet up for meals. She probably does have a bit of OCD behaviour. She can't leave things be, she always has to find fault ect.
It's not just against me to be honest, she has history for finding fault in the least problem

No I didn't! I don't think so!

Yep, got to two different hotels. I did mention this and advocate for it. Was told by my OH it will be nice for us all to be together. You live and learn.

Oh and perhaps I did leave a coffee cup ring! I have thought about this. I have no fucks to give, the person who goes around looking for it is abnormal to me. Especially if it's your relative.

I honestly don't see anything wrong with her checking the room is okay, it's just what you would do. Having been away with many different people over the years we all tend to check everywhere before we go just to make sure nothing is left or whatever.

I'm also wondering whether your "diet" was only really important that night. For her to react like that I'd guess that maybe you always need to be a bit awkward. I've a sil with similar tendency which has lessened over the years but it can be really annoying. Think it's largely due to her feeling overwhelmed when she's with all of us.

The coffee cup ring at the side of the shower?? Strange little detail, it's a bit yuck and i would be a bit ewww if someone i was sharing a bathroom area left that... Would also make me check that the person hadn't left any horrible mess in their bedroom.

Stuf · 05/05/2023 07:24

It seems an over reaction on her part, why does it matter what you eat? Also calling her brother into talk about the coffee ring is just plain weird. Checking of the bedrooms is usually who ever booked the Airbnb so the feedback is good

AtChoService · 05/05/2023 07:28

What's it got to do with her what you eat? How does it affect her in any way?

Or is she one of those, that ordered loads and wanted to split it four ways and only got to split it three?

Sparkletastic · 05/05/2023 07:35

If you have to have future contact pull her up on her behaviour every single time. She is getting away with it due to your weak DH and she's banking on the fact you won't confront her. Prove her wrong.

ChiefPearlClutcher · 05/05/2023 07:38

Don’t you have another thread about this?

You both sound like hard work.

Gazelda · 05/05/2023 07:40

She over reacted.

So did you.
