Has anyone had family therapy? How do I go about finding someone?

We're in a bit of a crisis at the moment. DH and DS (18, and autistic) are both very depressed, their behaviour is difficult in different ways and they're winding each other up, and making each other miserable. They're each in separate therapeutic support but the situation isn't sustainable and as a last ditch attempt before splitting up I'd like to try family therapy.

What are people's experiences? Does anyone have a place they could recommend? We're in London and can afford private.

Quite some time ago, after divorce, when the children (teens) were struggling. I found it helpful and comforting (mostly to understand that I was not the problem!) and I think DS found it helpful; DD not so much but mostly because XDH would not engage…. So I’d say if everyone is on board it might be worth a try.

For other therapy I googled, spoke to three potential counsellors, and did online - so where you are doesn’t matter much.

Family therapists should be registered with UKCP so you can search on their website. Institute of family therapy also offers family therapy with student therapists for a reduced rate
