Gentlemen, do your ladies treat you?

So I was talking to my friend recently, we work together and due a bonus in a few days. I was telling him I was going to get the missus (we're married 18 years) an Alexander McQueen handbag and a night away for the both of us. He then said something that rocked me back on my heels. "She buys you nothing mate" and thinking about it, it never really struck me before but its true. Any time I have a bit of money for whatever reason my 1st thought is the wife but I couldn't tell you the last thing she bought me spontaneously or outside of Christmas, my birthday, or from the kids for fathers day. I've been wearing Jeans for so long I'm actually embarrassed to tell you how long I've had them and a t-shirt from 8 years ago. I'm easy going so none of that stuff bothers me but it would be nice to be treated. She probably earns not alot less or the same as me, but i pay all the bills apart from the food shopping and fuel for the cars, so its not like she doesn't have the cash.

What's your experiences? Does your female partner treat you to nights away or the odd no reason gift?

Btw no I don’t treat my dh with weekend away/impressive and expensive gifts

1- I’m disabled and can’t work so have kitties money if my own. I could with the money he earns but what’s the point!
2- most importantly he would hate that!

And he DOESNT EITHER.

Thats what works for us. It might not work for you, your dwife or your couple.
Why would you do the same than anyone else anyway?
And if you dint and are happy with it, why did you ask?

labamba007 · 25/03/2023 17:46

Just buy yourself some jeans. This is the strangest question. You really don't need to be buying handbags to show affection. Personally, I couldn't give a shit about what bag I use 🤷‍♀️

Dinersaur · 25/03/2023 17:47

Why the fuck are you on Mumsnet addressing your post "Gentleman".

Fwiw we're on a weekend away I have paid for to treat my partner with my bonus. I treat him a lot.

MaireadMcSweeney · 25/03/2023 17:59

There's no 'standard' obviously! You're the kind of man who feels good by paying for his family and buys his wife designer handbags. That's cool but you can hardly be surprised if your wife buys into that dynamic too and doesn't think she needs to treat you!

I don't have that kind of relationship and I wouldn't want it either. But it's horses for courses.

"This gave me a chuckle, you probably need a wee nap after all those mental gymnastics.

All I asked was "does your wife/partner treat you"?"

Yeah us little women should just do as we are told and not comment on anything else.

Btw you sound like Jim Davidson.

Well staying on topic would be nice instead of trying to reframe what I said. Good ol' Jim, he had some great moments, thank you.

“The missus” 🙄
Isn’t there a Blokesnet or Geezersnet where you can post things like this?

Octomingo · 25/03/2023 18:03

I bought my dh a houseplant the other week. Ibuy him crisps too. I buy him cushions and blankets too, but he says they're for the house, not him.
He doesn't buy me treats, because I'm not a child.
He's cooked for me for 20 years, so I reckon that makes us even.

AllOfThemWitches · 25/03/2023 18:04

He gets the odd bj what more does he want

Just for clarification as some people are skipping the question, Does your wife buy you things? I appreciate the 3 or 4 people that have been able to read the 1st post, answer and not get distracted by their own insecurities.... and jeans....

Most posters here will be women. Unless they are lesbians, they won't have a wife.

I don't have a wife.

I do treat my OH though.

BasicDad · 25/03/2023 18:14

Standard Christmas and Birthdays. Outside of that a few small gestures, mainly food items I like.

If we're out shopping together, and she sees me eyeing something up that I like, or might look like I'm going to buy, she'll sometimes step in and tell me she wants to buy it for me, which I think is very cute. Outside of gifts, we have a wonderful relationship.

I reckon blokes are notoriously difficult to buy for too, which may widen the difference more so.

Luredbyapomegranate · 25/03/2023 18:15

Really?

But if so I would stop talking about ‘the wife’ ‘the Mrs’ and ‘treats’ and take down the Pirelli calendar because it’s not 1988.

Buy a new wardrobe for yourself instead of the bag for her. No one likes a martyr.

Ask her what she earns, open a joint bank account, put both your earnings in it and set up equal amounts of spending into your personal accounts.

These are more important things than who buys who more expensive presents.

CornishTiger · 25/03/2023 18:16

Yes I do. Hope that helps.

Buy yourself some new clothes. I’d rather that than a flashy handbag.

CornishTiger · 25/03/2023 18:17

Laughing at the no one calls any one missus these days. I didn’t get that memo.

This is a mostly female site OP. Post on Reddit on something.

But

I am a woman and yes I buy my male partner presents.

And yes all the women I know buy their partners/husbands presents.

So yes it is a bit weird if you do and she doesn’t.

Now go and buy yourself some new jeans.

You’re worth it.

Naoise88 · 25/03/2023 18:20

OK ill get a new pair of Jeans, but not those skinny legs ones, and no man should be baring his ankles under his trousers/jeans....

Why not go down your local high street with a sandwich board with DOES THE MISSUS TREAT YOU? on one side and BARE MAN ANKLES WILL BE THE RUIN OF CIVILISATION on the other?

Under your jeans?

How do you do that?

Don't you mean below?

Quitelikeit · 25/03/2023 18:27

Op

sadly there are a lot of man haters on MN!!

Ive seen posters being told to leave their marriage because their unit told them to eff off so you really aren’t alone in being attacked 🤣🤣

Anyway I do buy my other half gifts all the time - only thing is it’s out of his own money

Quitelikeit · 25/03/2023 18:28

Husband not unit!!!

Badbudgeter · 25/03/2023 18:34

I'd expect an adult with their own income to but their own jeans etc. Everyday clothes aren't really gifts with the exception of nice socks.

How patronising you are @Naoise88

PrettyMaybug · 25/03/2023 18:44

@Quitelikeit

......sadly there are a lot of man haters on MN!!!

Sadly, more women-haters. Some blatantly admitting they're men, AND some pretending they're women. (The latter stand out a mile.)
