How aware are people of this? And does anyone know of charities that can help, where this is at play?

I once reported my friend /and dh to get charity they rescued their ddog from.
They came and took it back the next day. Is that what you mean op? pets abused in their own home?

Ofcourseshecan · 21/03/2023 18:07

I would contact the RSPCA.

mbosnz · 21/03/2023 18:13

I mean situations where animals are threatened and abused to continue to abuse and coerce partners and/or children.

And as for the RSPCA. . .

What region are you in?

There's this one for example but I believe it's local to Cornwall?

Sorry this sent too soon.

It may be better to search for support based on a location

Report to the police. Animal cruelty is an offence is law, and the police work with other agencies in matters of family/ pet safety. If the police ask you to report to the RSPCA, highlight this crime report is linked to wider safeguarding and domestic violence concerns for a family. Insist that they record the matter as a crime incident.

I think several nationwide animal charities also have fostering schemes for pets of people fleeing domestic violence.

Sadly it's quite common for abusive partners to threaten or hurt pets to control their victim.

I didn’t know this was a ‘thing’ but a part of my stbxh behaviour around the time I was leaving when he was being very angry, frightening, breaking stuff etc was also kicking the cat which was incredibly distressing especially for the children 😔
she couldn’t come with us to the rental sadly as they said no but she is being looked after by family

Thank you so much for your responses. I can't say too much, but suffice to say, I was made very aware of such a vile reality. And I do mean vile.

I wanted to know who was doing something about it, if anyone, so I can support them, and if not, then to somehow figure out how to do something about it myself.

This is just disgusting that people can do that. Makes me so angry.
