if you used a solicitor and it was pretty straightforward?

I guess, there's no simple answer to this. For me, it's was just the £500 for the divorce application online. Everything is fair and amicable and we sorted finances and child arrangements between us. It's worked well.
For my DP, it's cost thousands and that was before he decided to become litigant in person.
It will depend really on the circumstances

If you need to use a solicitor it won't be cheap. They're experts in dragging it out and causing maximum divisiveness to maximise their fees.

Consider DIY if your circumstances allow it.

I saw a solicitor for one hour to be sure I had the process/known pitfalls of going it alone clear in my mind. This cost about £250 I think. After that I did it online, so about £400 court fees etc plus fees to separate jointly owned properties and related mortgages. Much later I did a consent order via a solicitor as it was clear XH was being a financial nincompoop and I didn’t want any chance of him coming back for more. All costs except the initial consult we shared equally. So I think in all it cost me about £1500. Money well spent!

Mine cost me almost £30k, mainly because my ex was a complete wankstain all the way through, and dragged it out for 3 years 🙄

I spent about £4k and it was a pretty straightforward process. However I made sure I got a really good solicitor as my ex was abusive and I wanted someone who knew what they were doing. I also had mediation which added on to the cost, which is advisable if you have kids and a house to sell etc. You can do the divorce yourself if you have nothing to split between yourselves.

Mine was ages ago, 1997 but cost about £200 with a solicitor but was extremely straightforward. Before he left we closed our joint account, we had no savings & he signed the house over to me because he “didn’t want to be weighed down” with a mortgage. Stupid man didn’t even think about him being eligible for any equity. I then filed for divorce & my solicitor wrote to my ex-H to enquire if he was disputing it. He wrote back “ I have no intention of disputing this because I explored an affair & I can confirm that this affair continues “ Wank badger that he was.
I was divorced with no fuss so suited me.

£6k due to seemingly complex consent order and solicitors dragging their feet. Then turned out to be not so complex once exH decided to be sensible.

£41,000.

It wasn't straightforward.

He was a total Wanker, abusive, violent and wouldn’t agree to anything. So, I paid him £20k ( 20 years ago) to go away. Best money I ever spent.

I did it myself after 2 years. The ex was in agreement and not a knob.
A do it yourself divorce is currently £595. If your ex is being a knob, then definitely get a solicitor.

I don't really remember but think it was £2-£3k for both the divorce and the house transfer (used same solicitor for both). Mine was pretty straightforward. The solicitor supported with the consent order and a few other bits. Felt cheap to get him out of my life.

30k
Entirely due to exH starting point of 100% to him
