I really like someone and want to invite him over but I have no idea how to go about it. Should I text or phone? be direct or pretend I need help with something (he’s previously done diy) for me before.

As above. Keep it friendly and open. Coffee is good and keep it light so it can be just coffee or might be more "coffee 😁".
