How do you prepare/plan to leave?

My relationship has totally broken down. We’ve been together since we were in our teens and are now mid/late thirties and we have one DS (2). The relationship has fizzled out and now we’re arguing more and more. I don’t want DS to grow up in this environment and can only see it getting worse as we are beginning to resent each other.
We have a flat (mortgage) together and both work full time. I’m not sure where to begin with working out finances and what I need to plan or get ready for when we split. I was thinking of giving myself time to save as much as possible as I have some personal debt, but I don’t know how long I can take living like this. I have no friends or family I could stay with in the meantime unfortunately. Any advice or recommendations would be wonderful.
