A nosey contraception question for those whose dh/dp's have had a vasectomy.

Dh had the snip 3 weeks ago and he has to wait till 12 to do his sample. I know we have to still be careful until his results come back but what about after this if he is all clear?

I'm absolutely petrified of getting pregnant again so would it be silly to use other contraception.

Just out of interest what do you use, if anything?

used condoms until sample was clear (took longer than 12 weeks for us, he had to retest) now no other contraception

BecauseImWorthIt · 25/01/2008 19:03

I stayed on the pill until he was 'signed off' bye the hospital. But we also kept the letter from them saying that the sample was clear, just in case!

NAB3wishesfor2008 · 25/01/2008 19:04

DH has had clear results so nothing now.

choosyfloosy · 25/01/2008 19:05

topical for me as dh had his done today!

for a long time we have used the non-penentrative sex option because we have been so terrified of getting pregnant, plus the occasional condom.

it wouldn't be at all silly to use extra contraception IMO if it would help you to relax, but unless he actually LIKES condoms I think it would be unfair to expect him to use them, having gone through the snip.

What about a diaphragm?

Nbg · 25/01/2008 19:08

He isnt all that impressed by the option of condoms having had the snip, your right there Choosy!

I was thinking of the cap because I cant use any other female contraceptives.

I wouldnt have used anything but when the doctor said 1 in 3500 mens tubes knit back together it would undoubtedly be us!

1 in 3500 is a very very small chance you know - much much smaller than any other form of contraception. We don't use anything - that was the whole point of the vasectomy really!

hana · 25/01/2008 19:22

nothign here either, odds are low

Nbg · 25/01/2008 19:29

wonder if we could get 3500 women to reply

I'm just being dramatic arent I.

Odds may be low but it happens.....friend due baby next month conceived 3 months after vasectomy....Her dh forgot to go for retest and hey turns out it hadn't worked!

Beware!!

Fimbo · 25/01/2008 19:37

Iirc my dh had to give 2 samples - as standard procedure. He had fun trying to find the chute to put it in at the hospital. He eventually had to ask a security guard and got that "knowing look". PMSL .

It was about 18mths ago and the first couple of months I was dreading that it hadn't worked but you do get over that quite quickly. It's now great to be free so to speak.

Nbg · 25/01/2008 19:56

OMG SS!

Well I guess if you dont test then you dont know.

lol at your dh fimbo

Luckily my dh gets a pot and a freepost envelope sent out
pmsl

DH's took 10 MONTHS to get a clear sample, eventually had to get special letter from hospital saying that although there were swimmers they were almost immobile and gave us the "all clear". We no longer use anything.

Fizzylemonade · 26/01/2008 18:48

My Dh had snip before Christmas and I will continue to take the pill, I am so paranoid that I will get pregnant and ruin what we consider to be our perfect family of 4.

We will be looking into paying privately to have samples tested after the 2 that the NHS do. Not sure how frequently we will do this.

Someone posted on here not so long ago that her friend was pregnant despite her husband having the snip. Worst one I heard was american guy, had 1 baby with his wife he then had snip, she got pregnant again and he had to have another snip and then she got pregnant again!!!!! Result, yes another snip. Imagine going through that op 3 times. Oh and yes they were all his kids as they DNA tested them after the second failure. It was to prove that the op had failed to his insurance company.

Nbg · 27/01/2008 14:38

Oh jeeezuz!

DH didn't bother doing any tests and 2.5 yrs later no pregnancy. We assumed it worked.

foofi · 29/01/2008 13:14

I continued taking the pill until we had the all clear letter, although my confidence in the said all-clear was rather low. A friend had told me that there had to be something like 100 ejaculations before it was all out of the system IYSWIM, and it was nothing like that amount for us (as far as I was aware!!). Like BecauseI'mWorthIt we're keeping the letter!

Elphaba · 29/01/2008 13:24

Once we got the all clear all other contraception went out the window (well, not literally!). Not used anything since - touch wood, seems to be 100% effective since I haven't got pregnant since (had it around 3 years ago).

Maidamess · 29/01/2008 13:26

My husband kept getting the 'not clear' result after his vas. After 5 attempts, we thought bugger it. And he hasn't been back since. I think they are a little over zealous with their ejeculation predictions.

Elphaba · 29/01/2008 13:26

Seems utterly pointless for a bloke to have the snip if you are going to continue to use something else.
