Planning Time Together in a LTR

If you’re in a long term relationship but not living together, is the time you spend together is planned day to day, or do you have a ‘routine’ that is largely automatic unless other plans crop up, etc?
Been with BF for three years and find it odd that he asks after each time we’re if he’ll see me tomorrow (or whenever we usually next would), or, when he calls me on his way home from work each evening, he’ll ask what my plans are - even though he knows my usual routine and that I would have told him of any other plans.
He also won’t presume to stay over - so have to ‘invite’ him each time.
Is it weird? It just all feels a bit formal to me..?
