Friendships, help me make them

I really struggle with friendships! Can't seem to keep people close or make new friends.
As an example, I've joined a women's sports team which I'm really enjoying. Loads of women seem to just strike up conversation while I look on, mute. Help me come up with some conversation starters please..!

Make a silly joke about something that happened earlier
compliment someone on their watch/trainers
ask Someone’s advice or ask them a question eg “I can’t seem to get the hang of that kick, can you show me?” Then follow with thanks, ask them about themselves etc.
try to make some (not too much) eye contact

Good on you for joining the team. You could try to:

Deliver an authentic complement. "That was an amazing goal".

Discuss your challenges/aims in relation to fitness. "I really need to get fitter. Do you practice during the week or...?"

"Is that your family looking on? Nice that they could be here to support you."

"That referee was really out of line when she..."

Volunteer to help wash the uniforms etc.
Ask someone what they do for a living. Tell them about your job.

Always smile is my tip. Be interested, look happy and engaged. Offer to do someone a favour (if they're struggling carrying something for example) or ask them for a favour, people tend to warm to those that need their help. Obviously don't outwardly interrupt a personal 1 on 1 conversation but if 3 or more people are chatting that's safer to do a friendly interject.
