Fuming my boyfriend has bought me a cat

I absolutely love and adore cats but I have one already and live in a very small home

boyfriend brought home a 16 week bengal cross kitten last night as a surprise and am fuming

cost him £150

firstly 16 weeks for me personally, is too old for a kitten between 10-12 weeks is better I’ve had cats and many kittens all my life and I prefer this age as easier to socialise them the way I want

secondly she is absolutely terrified and extremely timid . He didn’t even bother to go look at the litter and see the kittens with their mum, usually I would go for the most confident. He bought poor kitten from back of a car . Have spent hours trying to coax her from under the bed , she has spent the evening scrambling around the house in terror

(obviously I know it takes a lot of time for a kitten to settle in new environment ) my other cat is livid that I’ve shut him in my daughters room

but now I’m starting to feel increasingly angry at him, esp as I can’t afford another pet and the fact he spent 150 on what is basically a mongrel cat - no such breed as bengal cross they are either bengal or not .

the person he bought it from is refusing the kitten back and I feel shit to readvertise this poor cat it’s been through enough , other option is a shelter but again , traumatising
what do I bloody do

Are all the people so traumatised by your idea of putting a perfectly healthy kitten to sleep vegetarians or vegans? Because millions of perfectly healthy fluffy young mammals are being put to sleep every day.

Yes, I've been a vegetarian for 37 years. A vet will not put down a perfectly healthy animal just because the 'owner' asks them to, you can not liken it to the slaughter of animals for food.

PicaNewName · 11/09/2022 15:44

No reputable breeder would give you a kitten before it's at least 12 weeks old, your idea on age goes against every cat registry's requirements.

PicaNewName · 11/09/2022 15:44

And you expect this kitten to feel at home in a new place straight away??

I can and do liken it, however I don't want to derail the thread further. Let's leave it as to a difference of opinion on the worth of various animals' lives.

I would say he sorts it out but I wouldn't trust him not to just dump the cat.

I have a purely practical view of the animal kingdom so Im afraid I would take it to the vet and ask to have it pts. It's not having a good life already. If the vet has any alternative ideas I'd listen to them.

Disgusting.

The OP only made four posts - this question is answered in the second.

BTW - 10-12 weeks as per the OP's posts is the age recommended for kitten adoption by some of the big adoption charities, not a minimum of 12. I don't for one moment believe its a breeder, rather than an owner whose cat got out, but 10-12 is standard for adopting bog standard kittens

Stupid bastards

Animals are not gifts

whenithits · 11/09/2022 22:44

ffs practical view? You realise that’s pretty traumatising even for a veterinary team cos the last thing they need in their day is for an owner to insist they put their healthy young cat down… gee whiz and yes they’d likely try and persuade you to put it up for adoption/rehoming, which seems to be an option in OP’s case or persevere, I guess, she will need time to settle in.

Musti · 11/09/2022 23:11

Absolutely stupid to get a pet for someone but just sell the kitten. I’m sure there will be plenty of loving owners wanting to welcome the kitten into their homes. Easier whilst still a kitten.

Sevenwondersofthewoo · 11/09/2022 23:53

Vets will put to sleep if asked for any reason.

don’t kid yourselves they don’t as they do.

Glad to hear the kitten has found his home .

I'm thinking your DP bought him "off the back of a lorry" thinking he was rescuing him -as you say the kitten is on the older side of a breeder selling .
There are loads of animals on Gumtree etc where someone has bought a pet and changed their mind but they want £x "to ensure a good home"
More likely they want to get their money back Hmm
Your DP probably thought he was rescuing the cat but when you were less than thrilled (understandably) he didn't know what to do .

Hopefully now the cat will settle and your Aunt will have a mini tiger wandering around the house .

Ooops "he" is a "She" cat !
