Woman gives birth to twins with different dads after having sex with both on same day

I didn't think it was possible to do.

Why not? Two lots of sperm during fertile period, the woman’s body happens to release 2 eggs that month, and she gets pregnant with half sibling twins.
It’s probably fairly rare because singleton birthd are much more frequent, most women don’t try to actively conceive with 2 men at once, and contraceptive failures are unlikely to happen twice with two different men in the same month.

ScabbersChin · 07/09/2022 22:11

How would they even know. Surely they’d check only one twin. Like how on Earth did those conversations and thoughts go 😵‍💫

LunaTheCat · 07/09/2022 22:13

She will be fine with twins.... she’s obviously a supreme multi-talker.

KindergartenKop · 07/09/2022 22:14

Cats do it.

Curioushorse · 07/09/2022 22:15

Yes, but that would mean ovulating two eggs at a time. I think that's possible to do, isn't it? Because I think my friend's non-identical twins were from two separate eggs. Ovulating two eggs runs in her family, apparently.

Then, I guess if you had sex with two men, their sperm could fertilise different eggs.

womaninatightspot · 07/09/2022 22:15

It sounds pretty unusual to me. How did she find out do a paternity test on both possible Dads and both children?

I suspect it'll be really challenging trying to organise shared custody with both of them and it not being fair Birthdays, christmases, days out if one Dad is more involved than the other.

Completely unreasonable but if you were those twins, in years to come, you'd probably get utterly fed up of explaing that yes we're twins but we have different Dads

georgarina · 07/09/2022 22:16

It's possible if you release more than one egg, esp if it's a day or two apart. Like PP said it's just not a very common set of co-occurring events (hyperovulating and having unprotected sex with multiple partners at the same time).

Lipsandlashes · 07/09/2022 22:17

Wasn’t there speculation that one of the girls from Teen Mom on MTV had twins by two different fathers? One looked like her ex boyfriend and the other looked like her new boyfriend and she passed both off as his. I was always fascinated by it as I didn’t think it was biologically possible.

Cismyfatarse · 07/09/2022 22:18

My Mum (Midwife in the 1960s) delivered twins like this (pre 1970 - as she gave up work then). There was no DNA testing but she was adamant they were of clearly different ethnicities.

I have no independent corroboration of this and my Mum is dead but she remembers the shock at the difference.

Saralyn · 07/09/2022 22:21

I am sure I remember a news story like this from the late nineties. So knew that it is possible.

someone once told me that she believed her twins (with same dad) were from too different cycles, so one was conceived a month later. No idea if that is possible though

Stichintime · 07/09/2022 22:25

It is totally possible but very rare. I'm guessing the closer in time the encounters are, the more likely.

Luredbyapomegranate · 07/09/2022 22:25

It’s possible with non identical twins because it’s two separate eggs.

I spose at least w DNA testing she should get child support from them both

Stichintime · 07/09/2022 22:27

Would also suggest the second guy had 'super sperm' to not be killed by the first guys sperm, or the first guys sperm weren't great fighters!

Here’s a link to the article it answers some pp questions: nypost.com/2022/09/07/mom-has-twins-with-different-dads-after-sex-with-2-men-in-1-day/amp/

PremiumPiglet · 07/09/2022 22:28

I knew someone who conceived twins a month apart
it was picked up at an early scan

Megjobethamy · 07/09/2022 22:28

It's called superfecundation...

PremiumPiglet · 07/09/2022 22:29

I've heard of this before with one black baby with brown eyes and one white baby with blue eyes.

Stichintime · 07/09/2022 22:30

So the lady in question released a second egg after the first baby implanted Piglet? Throws what we thought we knew on its head a bit!

That can happen with the same parents though. Children inherit different genes and some characteristics can be recessive and only pop up generations apart.
