Why would best friend lie about this?

Have a best friend that lives quite a way away so we communicate a lot on fb messenger. Lately she has cut our conversations short by saying she has something else that needs doing right away. However, she still shows as active for ages afterward. She is the chatterbox out of the two of us and will chat for a long time if she needs advice etc. Why can’t she just say bye bye and leave it at that. I’m beginning to get pi- s - - off!

Do yourself a favour- turn off the active status notification.

It isn’t always accurate. But also, perhaps one of things she has to do is reply to other people.

She's probably gone offline and the app is still showing as active.

Ohahjustalittlebit · 22/08/2022 21:36

Is she dating?

saraclara · 22/08/2022 21:43

FB messenger's 'active' function is incredibly inaccurate. It can be on for anything from a couple if minutes to an hour or more after the person has left it. I find it particularly bad for that if using a laptop as if the screen stays on, messenger seems to some someone's there. But even on my phone I've had someone say I've been active when I haven't, and the other way round.

Seriously, don't take it as accurate, and stop checking whether she's still there or you'll end up paranoid.

DP's shows as active for up to an hour after I've watched him close out of the app. So it's not necessarily accurate.

Has she started seeing someone and is chatting to them but doesn't want to tell you about it?

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 22/08/2022 21:58

If I have something else to do then I get up and walk away from my computer. The FB window is just left open so I imagine it shows as active until the computer goes to 'sleep' which is around 30 minutes.

FB messenger status is notoriously unreliable.

It regularly says friends are online when I know 100% they are not.

It doesn’t warrant trusting for a second

PurpleDaisies · 22/08/2022 21:59

Mine stays active if I’m listening to a podcast while driving.

ParsleyPesto · 22/08/2022 22:17

Whatever the reason, she wants to keep the conversation short and you need to respect that. She doesn’t actually owe you an explanation.

Hotandbothereds · 22/08/2022 22:20

She might need to do something else on her laptop but leave the FB tab open, mine probably shows active all day, doesn’t mean I’m sat on it constantly.

You’re completely over thinking this!

Ziggyisthebestdogintheworld · 22/08/2022 22:37

My son uses mine to see if I’m at work or not
if I haven’t been on for two/three hours he knows I can’t answer
unfortunately it’s almost never right and I end up with about 5/6 missed calls and a few texts where he’s convinced I’m dead in a ditch somewhere
i have to make a point of closing down the app or it show’s me as active-and that’s not always accurate either
glad to know it’s not just mine that does this!
