The Boss

I work for alot of retired married couples and I only ever hear the men calling their wifes the Boss never the other way around. They also tend to get reprimanded alot in front of me .Also the men wait till there wifes are out of earshot to ask me to do something or other to do with the job. I've noticed as we reach middle fifties that my wife is doing it too.My daughter has even told her to stop picking on me and I've noticed I've started occasionally calling her the boss too. This is only a light hearted question. I really think its really funny the majority of the time but just interested why it happens later in married life.

Can’t answer your question but also add terms of endearment such as –

Ball and chain
‘Er or ‘Im indoors
The better half
The current Mr/Mrs…. (thanks to Terry Wogan for that!!)

Definitely all meant in an affectionate way and nothing to get offended by.

I don't know the answer... but my Mum had a fridge magnet which read:

'Would you like to speak to the man in charge or the woman who knows what's going on?' 🙂

I could speculate and suggest that over time some men come to realise how capable their wives actually are and how much they do.

Or maybe it's easier on their brains to defer to all decisions to 'The Boss'...

Thought of another one -

Oh She Who Must Be Obeyed

Again, a term of endearment.

Generally a term of endearment, but probably also true to some degree, a lot a men will defer decisions to their wives for a number of reasons

  1. they can’t be bothered to deal with it
  2. they don’t want to deal with being wrong
  3. they don’t want to upset their wives
Or a host of any other reasons

Also the men wait till there wifes are out of earshot to ask me to do something or other to do with the job. << this is men who know they wives will get the hump with they speak their mind, really really common

Yes true ,my wife is definitely the more capable ,better educated, manager aswell probably why i've started referring her as this but I think I maybe just hearing it so much that I've taken it on in a jokey sort of way.Her favourite line in front of the kids lately is.."look what I have to deal with/put up with ".She did have a spate of calling me an idiot too when I made mistakes but only in front of the kids.I told her I really don't like being called that and she seems to have got the message now.

that’s pretty f’ing rude.

SurreyHillsinspring · 18/08/2022 08:58

I sort of understand why she started this because it was a period when she was constantly stressed about her boss who has now moved departments now.

She has always been very feisty a major reason why I married her ,when she goes into one I do find it quite comical which the maybe are too young to understand.
