Changing mirena for copper coil?

I've had a mirena coil for coming up ,5 yrs, so need to get it replaced soon.

Previously we used condoms for years and I'm not interested in the pill or contraceptive injection.

I like no periods on the mirena coil. This is a big draw for me. Not that mine were massively heavy but still annoying for when I'm swimming, paddle boarding etc. I have put weight on though - could be my age, now 40? Has anyone swapped mirena for copper and what were the changes you noticed?

Copper coil won't stop your periods as its hormone-free. From what I know of it, it magnifies periods. So, if you get heavy periods, you'll get *heavy periods. *Cramps? Cramps on steroids etc. Worth a try if you are a 5 day long, regular flow kinda woman.

I have used Mirena coil and Kyleena coil in the past, both I got removed around the 6 month mark. It seems hormonal contraception just doesn't agree with me, really messes with my weight and mental health. Copper coil I wouldn't consider because of the aforementioned side affects (affects/effects?!) which the medical practioner echoed as fair expectations.

If you are looking for cycle control, sadly you need something hormonal. Having tried most of them, I've had to accept that the negatives do not outweigh the positives for me.

Long past time that they came up with more contraceptive options for men. I think the fact they havent is evidence that men wouldnt put up with the effects us women are expected to suck up...but that's a whole other thread....

I switched from mirena to copper and have preferred it on the whole - i found the mirena effected my moods badly and I gained a lot of weight - not entirely due to the coil - there was no magic wand when I came off it (sadly!) but I’m definitely an emotional eater and the mood swings did not help.
But of course the big downside are periods, I’m lucky on the whole I have a very regular cycle, no cramps and a light to moderate flow (far tmi, sorry) so for me it’s worth the mild inconvenience.
