Lone parent - how do you explain where the absent parent is? Any books to help ?

I am panicking. DS started asking where his dad is. He’s only 2.5 and dad never been around. No real reason, he has no other kids, no relationship and is middle aged in a steady job. I can’t even say daddy was poorly or daddy died etc. I have no answers. Anyone have any experience or books I can refer to?!

Mine left when I my mum was pregnant and it was just "he didn't want to be a dad". Which actually was fine for me, but maybe this would upset your DS idk

Thanks @XSnoe I just feel out of my depth here. I literally do not know what to
say and keep changing the subject bit obviously I can’t do that forever
